    This is a repeat of the 84' Olympics. While I do think the Schultz brothers and Randy Lewis had a great shot at gold if Russia had been there, there was always an asterisk next to any gold medalist in wrestling at those games.
    No different here.
    Simply put, we aren't going to see the best against the best.

    • @brendan638
      @brendan638 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Nope. Randy Lewis didn't get to compete in the 1980 Olympics because USA didn't go. He won in 1984 because he did go. No asterisks for him, or for anybody that won in 1984. This is how competition works. If you show up, you compete. Don't show up? You don't get to compete.

      @@brendan638 You don't seem to understand what is being discussed here.
      The Russians are the dominant wrestling power internationally.
      If they aren't there, then it won't be the best vs the best.
      Whoever wins gold won't have competed against the best in their weight class, and therefore will most certainly have an asterisk next to their gold as we will never know if they could have beaten the Russians.
      I watched the 84' Olympics, and everyone knew that without the Russians, it wasn't the same.
      There were a number of Americans in 84 who never would have won gold if they had faced a Russian opponent. It's as simple as that, whether you like it or not.

      @brendan638 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@cdcaleo Because USA didn't go in 1980, does that mean any athlete who won in 1980 should have an asterisk next to their name? Not just for wrestling- for any sport.
      Here's what's simple: If you don't compete, you don't get a chance to win. So if you want to compete, you gotta play by the rules to be eligible to compete. Russia doesn't want to go? Fine, but that was their choice. not USA's.

      Although completely disingenuous, I'm pretty sure the IOC ban is technically due to Russia destroying Ukraine's Olympic infrastructure, not invading Ukraine. Thus, the IOC argues that since Israel has not done the same in Gaza (do the Palestinians even have an Olympic presence?), the two situations aren't analogous.
      Personally, it seems like the Olympic ban allows Russia to claim martyrdom of a sort, and makes it even easier for Putin to isolate the Russian people from the rest of the world, and reality.
