**I do not hate this game, and if you like it, I appreciate where you are coming from.** Some inaccuracies/clarifications in this vid below: Physics - There's nothing inherently wrong with the unreal engine. While some things are different (or worse), it is overall fun to optimize the movement in this game. Charging is still fast, collection is still satisfying. The devs clearly spent some time fine tuning this and I have to respect that, despite some flaws. Aesthetics - I used some incorrect terminology. For example, I said "hyper realisitic" to describe the environments when I should have said "stylized". I also used the term "cell shaded" to describe the the enemies, which is wrong, when I should have stuck with terms like "cartoonish" and "overly vibrant". I see many of you disagree that the art direction is clashing, which is fair. Also I said the spyro 3 baby dragons were great, but they did forget the sheep outfit dragon in frozen altars, which may seem like a small gripe but I think many spyro 3 fans remember that dragon quite fondly and were dissapointed by that. Music - I realize that you can change the music back to the original tracks if you don't like the new ones. That's great, but it doesn't take away from my criticism of the new soundtrack either. I will admit that the dynamic music when you charge is a great touch. And some remade songs are legitimately good too in the context of the game, they're not all worse. Release - I made it seem like toys for bob didn't want to release the 2nd and 3rd games, and that it was the fans that pressured them, when really the problem was Activision putting a hard release deadline on them in the first place. Toys for Bob, nor the fans, shouldn't be faulted for this. What "we" want to see - It is clear to me that I do not speak for every Spyro fan, nor can I definitively say what we as a community want out of a future release, I can only speak for myself on any of this. I am not trying to convince you guys to agree with me.
I mean it might not take away from your criticism of the music because you personally don't like the new tracks as much, but it does directly take away from your criticism that they should add a way to go back to the original music when it's literally already an option in the game.
Thank you for the clarification post. I will leave the lion's share of my comments in its own thread, but honestly I love the (original) Spyro series and had so much hype and expectations for this Reignited version, and when I finally got my hands on it (Switch version) there was a nice amount of magic to be found... but I also felt the seams in the work. I felt the parts where they sacrificed the original to make it "better", and the parts where they just couldn't remake it faithfully, even with all the effort in the world. And I have to thank you EVER SO MUCH because I have been told countless times that Reignited is superior to the originals and when I disagree I get called out for "never liking anything new" and "always having to have a critique". I will end this here, as my rant comment should suffice, but it really feels good to know others see the differences.
the fact that reignited is so poorly optimised is an absolute tragedy considering the original games were trailblazers in their optimisation and visual fidelity at such a stable framerate for the time
Even the most well optimized games now are still so terrible compared to the average game back in the day. Nothing seems to do anything all that creative to improve image quality or performance now. It's either upscaling or a weird hybrid/combination of effects to changes things. Back in the PS3 days and earlier, devs would create entirely new techniques to do things so no 2 games were alike in the regard.
One thing I wish they didn’t change was the enemy noises. The original enemies noises were so unique and funny. Like the Bulls saying ‘whoa’in Town Square and the green Druid’s monotone ‘Ow’ in Magic Crafters. Also, I will never forgive them for taking away the crazy noise the enemies in the Dream Weavers homeworld made.
for those of us who played the original games lots as kids (and adults), little things like this stands out, especially the sounds. It'd have been cool if we had options to choose between original and new music, as well as other sounds, and have the character models look like the originals while you're far away from them until you're up close. Still as it is tho, I'm glad these remakes exist. They were the reason for me finally buying a ps4 a few years ago.
The entire sound design for the Reignited Trilogy was a massive let-down for me. The soundtrack isn't as striking and whimsical (I gave it a chance, but ended up switching to the the old soundtrack fairly quickly), the enemies that had such instantly recognisable cries getting replaced with generic grunts, the campy voice acting has gone, even the most satisfying part: the sound when a gem hits Spyro was so iconic in the originals(in 2 & 3 at least) and it just doesn't live up. The visuals, to me, are great and have added new vibes to some area, the controls and wonky as heck and don't feel anything like any of the originals, but the charm that oozed from the sound design in the originals is long gone with the remakes.
@@Bracketmeister The entire audio system is a letdown. There's no unique sound engineering (beyond hard-ground and grass) for Spyro's feet interacting with certain surfaces in Reignited, something the entire OG trilogy had top tier attention to (overlooked) detail with. The visuals are also a huge letdown when you actually sit down, stop moving, and analyze it and compare (beyond _"HD and more stuff!"_ ) to the original series - Reignited goes for this overly cartoony, clay-like, toybox-esque (hello Skylanders influence) artstyle, which is a direct contradiction to the original trilogy's philosophy that purposely aimed for a middle-ground between cartoony and realism with edge. All rid away to watered down heavily in the remake. Don't get me started on numerous botched redesigns, numerous botched other-media references, numerous censorship, false/incomplete classic soundtrack (y'all been deceived for over half a decade), botched characterizations, botched voiced-lines, botched mini-games, removal of lines, etc. (Dead Space remake is guilty of these sentiments too. I disprove both these remakes.) All these remakes keep missing the point and making series more childish than they were and intended to be. One of MANY reasons why I don't want a Jak and Daxter remake, even moreso when looking at R&C's 2016 one (and Spyro).
Agree for the most part but you failed to mention the greatest sin of Reignited which was getting rid of the WHYAYAYOWM chanting from the guys in Colossus
Yeah...I did not agree with that point at all. TFB Really did do a great job at updating the graphics from the OG Trilogy while still having a cartoony look in Reignited IMO. While there are some odd character design and world design changes that I'm not a fan of when compared to OG, it lookin "Too realistic" ain't that.
It's a poor word choice but ultimately his point is clear, some stuff is overly detailed and it ends up looking creepy rather then playful or whimsical like the original. The comparison with "realistic Simpson" drives it home, it's leaning too close to realism. Even if you disagree, I really have to believe the people saying he's incorrect are putting on blinders. The style isn't anywhere nearly as faithful as it could be, there's even mods attempting to fix it, which demonstrate it directly to some degree.
8:43 feels disingenuous, it wasn't their decision to get funneled into being support for whatever AAA dumpster fire they're working on that blame rests squarely on activision management
there are 3 reasons i prefer the originals 1: The physics. Controls feel too different. 2: The grass hides all the gems. 3: The game LITERALLY does not work unless you limit FPS to 60. Progression blocking bugs.
1) The controls feel stiff to me and Inhate having to move the camera with the shoulder buttons. At leasted Reignited gives me the option to breath fire with R2 2) Just use Sparx to find the gems that you're missing 3) I can't comment on that because I don't have a frame rate fetish
I just replayed 1 and 2 on PS4 and in both games I was having issues with gems falling through the ground or getting stuck in the air. Seems like very minor issues that could be fixed easily in a patch, but they just haven't yet?
The one thing I give Toys for Bob credit for is preserving Copeland’s original soundtrack as a system setting in the menu. They could have just kept their own rendition of each soundtrack exclusive, my childhood self was overjoyed to know I could experience Stewart’s genius as it was when I first played the trilogy. 11:26 I absolutely love your Spyro outro animation ❤ Thanks for everything you do Dayo.
I'm delighted to burst your bubble in informing you that you haven't been playing with the true original soundtrack. You were lied too. You have a collection of incomplete versions of the original songs in the remake, which means the only way to hear the actual full/original songs in-game is to play the original games. This also applies to level intros.
@windy3935 dude, it's just a video game, I wouldn't be bummed out if the music isn't the exact same. What a wierd thing to consider getting upset about 💀
@@Wyattinous "It's just a video game" isn't an argument, let alone a valid point in general. That attitude though is exactly why the consumer industry is the way it is, so great job there contributing to that and not holding companies accountable for bad practices. Saying you're not bummed and not upset that you were lied to by a corporation, especially when they got your money with said deception, is extremely stupid, pathetic, and shill behavior. The simple point is that... you were wrong for the praises and credit you gave the developers. This is a fact and there shouldn't be any argument against that. It should come with automatic internal disappointment, but that's the secondary point not the main. I'm not going to go back and fourth with you on why you should be.
Same. Though it seems like he is playing the game on PC with more than 30fps. Game is flawless on PC if you enable VSync and set the framerate to 30. This is because game has the physics tied to framerate so some things can either stop working or become quite unstable. The Switch, PS4 and Xbox One are always 30fps which is why there is no issue.
Depends how much you played them - on a casual playthrough it's possible you just never encountered or noticed them, even in 2 and 3. Doing a completion% or speedrun will make it more likely you'll encounter them, though. Either that or you have the exact serial# machine that they used during development so there's no problems and you're super lucky.
The main thing I really didn't like about Reignited, was that they changed every single color palette of each level, making it either washed out or just uncannily wrong. The original has such strong colors that seamlessly blend together in their skyboxes and environments, while reignited is just... color filters. The character designs also greatly suffer from an uncanny feeling, like you said. To me, it doesn't look like spyro characters, it looks like Toys For Bob characters. They have these plastic looking proportions that make many of them, even the dragons, look so out of place. They don't look like dragons, they look like mascot costumes.
THIS. I remember when the level reveals were coming out... and I didn't recognise them! The skyboxes and grass were all different-- I was so astounded.
I agree about the environments. The enemies are fine to me, though I do miss the old gnorcs. The Peace Keepers worlds and Zephyr especially don’t look right and are just way too bright.
I feel like a big part of the optimization problem is that this game is constantly sending data to Epic Games servers even though it's a single-player only game. I know this because if you try to run this game on linux you have to go into the game's files and delete the line that has the address it's sending the data to so that it will simply decide there isn't a location instead of throwing an invalid location exception and crashing the game.
Reignited is fine, I've only played through it once and glad it exists for those who wanna play Spyro and don't have as easy access to the originals but obviously the originals are way more special and almost flawlessly executed not to mention the nostalgia factor.
I forget which one, but there's a level in the remake where you can get stuck in a river if you play at 60fps or higher because you can't jump high enough to get out.
I don't even like the aesthetics of the remasters. They fundamentally mistunderstand and underpareciate what was special about the originals. I'd even have prefered a HD version of the games with the same low polys and low res textures just rendering at 4k60 without the PS1 rendering artifacts and infinite draw distances. I wouldn't even remove the level LODing, I think its actually beautiful. I'd just make the fading betweeing the two levels smoother.
I feel very similar about the N Sane Trilogy vs original Crash games. I'm glad they exist but they will never come close to the originals for me. The modern engines just can't recreate the incredible situation we had with those early 3D games where the devs were artists, but also trailblazers and technical geniuses...
Ehhhh N Sane is objectively way more polished than the Reignited trilogy is. I'd probably still go back and play the OG Crash 3 but Crash 1 especially feels horrible in comparison to how it does in N Sane, even with the different physics people bitch about constantly.
I do like the remake of Crash 1 quite a bit, except for the generator room and slippery climb. They made them way too bright. Crash 2 remake is also fine and made me like the river and jetpack levels more, N Gin has one move that looks absolute dogshit but whatever. Crash 3 remake tho feels incredibly rushed to me, even more so than these Spyro remakes: the bike and the jetski are ROUGH
Reignited easily should have had another year of dev time. It also sucks it's the last release we have as Spyro fans, meanwhile Crash has gotten several games. There's such an indescribable magic to the OG games, I can only hope a new game could come close to it.
I think the game that got the overall worst gameplay is 3. I realized this when playing through Lost Fleet’s skateboard challenge, alongside many of the swimming levels. The directional controls do not feel smooth. I have to nitpick the art as well, since that’s what I love about the original. Lost Fleet, for example, looks amazing in the original. The midnight blue sky contrasts super well with the green acid and the sandy textures. However, in RT, the skies are purple and foggy, thereby not capturing the nautical aesthetic the original possesses.
Reignited was a better remake than I ever expected, but I kind of expected nothing. I like it a lot even if it can't live up to the impossibly high standards set by the original. I just hope we get more spyro and that it's good
I recently watched a video called _The Ethereal Dreamworlds of Spyro the Dragon_ by Joyless. I didn't really realized it before, but the original games really did have a otherworldly, unnerving, dreamlike quality to them that is lost when playing the Reignited Trilogy. Reignited does have a unique art style that I like, but it's more... Streamlined. Sterilized. The unusual qualities in Reignited feels like a forgotten mistake, while the "jank" in OG Spyro feels like it was supposed to be there, even though neither is really the case.
So, i'm thankful the Crash remakes sorta brought back platformers, but one thing it did is just generalize how they should look as well, the Aesthetic and general look and design philosophy between the two sets of remakes is nigh indistinguishable, which is just wrong when you look at the originals. A good and easy way to see that they don't have a different artstyle or stylization is Nitro Fueled's Spyro Track, because it fits right in with the rest of the game, which is good for the game, the styles don't clash, but given it's a different series it should at least look a bit different.
I hate a lot of reignited trilogy, but one thing I gotta call you out on is that you used the opening theme of the Reignited Trilogy home screen as an example of a new soundtrack going against Stewart Copeland's words and composition philosophy of repeated listening. However, the Opening theme of Reignited Trilogy is the one new song in Reignited Trilogy that was composed by Copeland himself :x
well, its still a very valid point. its a celebration of the spyro trilogy. its not as good for repeated listening like the original sound track, though it is fantastic. i wish more people would talk about how the "WAAAAHHHH" is removed from enchanted towers though. a lot of the reignited soundtrack really fits with what dayo said in this video, big agrees here.
@@mysticpeanutbutterNumbaOne Oh yeah overall the new OST sucks eggs compared to the originals (Except the boss themes in 3 which go insanely hard for some reason and make me question why that sorta energy wasn't put into the rest of the OST when they were clearly capable of it). I definitely feel the loss of a lot of the original sounds. Like the way worse replacement for the OMMMMNUUUOOM UUUUUURRGHH monster voice thing in Magma Cone. I just felt the need to point out that the example song he used to say the OST was not as good as the original composer's was in bad taste when it was composed by the original composer.
They definitely went overboard with some of the new designs. Why'd they turn Spike in Spyro 3 into a less intimidating-looking rabbit creature? Why did they give Sheila clothes?!!? Excellent points btw.
Dam I was just thinking “it would be cool to hear Dayo’s thoughts on the remaster or see him speed run it for the hell of it” and here you drop this video lol. Only a few minutes in but great video so far man!
My recommended mods for PC (from NexusMods): Sparx Light (awesome real-time lighting from Sparx that shines on the environment), 60 FPS water, Classic Font (3D text and HUD), Classic sounds, Classic Crystal Dragon, Metal Vase Model Swap. I also like the Classic Spyro with Yellow Spines design.
I'm with you on pretty much everything. It feels like all I hear for Reignited is unqualified praise, but so many little things were disappointing for me. Spyro used to have a way of "nudging" past obstacles, like if you glided past the edge of a wall, it would just shift you a little and let you keep gliding. But in Reignited, you just bonk right into the wall and plummet. Certain obstacles and enemies are easier or harder than they should be because they’re just wired a little wrong. And it’s not uniform, either. Spyro 1 works just fine for me and I love the dragon designs so much that I actually prefer the Reignited version, and I like the skill points they added. But then there’s Year of the Dragon, and God, what happened? And why in the world hasn’t it been fixed yet? It’s 2024, and Lost Fleet’s skateboarding race still doesn’t count half your laps. That skill point is a nightmare to get not because it’s technically difficult, but because the glitches sabotage you constantly and the lag gets unbearable. YotD was my favorite of the original trilogy, but I can’t even go back to it in Reignited. It just makes me sad. I do like that they fixed Agent 9’s sections, though. Those were painful in the original.
As someone who grew up playing the original trilogy to death (especially the second game, which is my favorite for admittedly totally nostalgic reasons) I was beyond excited when Reignited was announced. It had been years since I'd touched the ogs, so during my initial playthrough I was not nearly as critical as I am now. Now I always switch the music back to the original tracks. I do the bare minimum in the flying levels because something about the inertia in Reignited just feels so off to me that it's sapped all the fun out of those parts. The skateboarding is like that too, though I've never been able to put words to why it felt so wrong so... Thank you for that haha. I've truthfully never fully completed the third games for those reasons. Anyway, great analysis as always, man. It really is a shame we missed out on what could have been, even if the games we did get are still fun in their own way.
Despite its issues, I appreciate the reignited trilogy compared to other recent "remakes". Other than the issues and changes presented in this video, Toys For Bob tried to keep the experience of the whole trilogy as close as possible to the originals without really changing much in terms of the story or characterization. On top of that, the entire trilogy is purchasable for less than the cost of a single new AAA game. Other remakes will needlessly change characters or the story for no real reason and strip out setpieces or moments to resell to you as DLC. The reignited trilogy (as well as the N Sane trilogy for Crash) give you all 3 games with nothing taken out. For me these two trilogy remakes set a new standard for remaking older titles that I wish other companies followed suit for.
It's unfortunate Activision forced these games to rush out so quickly. Given another year or even 6 months of development, they'd feel so much smoother, especially Spyro 3.
Spyro 3 definately needed more time. Last time I played it, 5 gems didn't spawn in Cloud spires. But I also got an extra 5 gems in Enchanted Towers. It evened out, but still annoying none the less.
The first thing i did in spyro reignited when it released was to swap back to the original soundtrack, no need to mess with something that was already incredible. Modern remaster soundtracks for games tend to sound too much like a movie and a bit more lacking in identity making it sound repetitive. I did enjoy Reignited but the atmosphere and vibe of the original just did better for me. I appreciate the game, graphics are great but it felt like it lost some of the atmosphere.
I always think it's fair to listen to the new tracks and give them a chance cuz the original tracks were all about atmosphere, it's nice to compare and contrast imo
The Spyro Reignited Trilogy is to the original Spyro the Dragon trilogy what Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I (and II) was to the original Sonic the Hedgehog 1990s era trilogy. Good games in their own right (I thought Sonic 4 was shit personally!) but they lack the winning formula which made the originals such an enjoyable yet magical experience. Just like how the Sonic the Hedgehog fans wanted a sequel to be more in line with what later became Sonic Mania, a lot of original Spyro the Dragon trilogy fans also wanted and still want a game which respects, understands and improves on what made the original games so enjoyable. The Ignited games are not bad games in and of themselves, they really arent! They just just lack the magic of what the originals had and still have from the simplistic movement physics to the skyboxes to the NPC character designs. They tinkered too much in areas and made it look, sound and feel too different from the original trilogy and as a result strayed too far from the winning formula.
I've beaten the reignited trilogy on PC atleast 3 times now. Never experienced any gamebreaking bugs or glitches. Played on Ultra graphics and it runs smooth as butter
One of the things I took from Reignited trilogy is just how gorgeous the scenery can be. Particularly spyro 1. Also, going underwater for the first time in Reignited was just jaw dropping for me. Going underwater, and just looking up in Sunrise Spring or Evening Lake is so calming and nice. Glad you're doing more on the aesthetic of the Spyro games too. That really resonates with me :)
The vast difference in feel of controls is the biggest downfall imo. In the originals they're crisp and on point, but in Reignited, it is like controlling a bar of soap. The change to jump animation/mechanics has the biggest impact, as the game world is designed for accurate jumping.
To me it comes down to the fact that Activision rushed them to release it, when it needed so much more time. The reason why they never “talked about timelines/development” is that they’d basically be whistleblowing how mistreated they were as a studio if they did so. Game didn’t start development until late 2017, which is just an absolute joke. It’s as if they needed to CONFIRM that N. Sane Trilogy was going to be successful, as if there was any chance it wasn’t. Development should have started at the same time as N. Sane Trilogy, as it needed more time than Crash.
To be honest, whether it's the original PS1 games or reignited, I'm still having fun regardless of which versions I play Because I love the Spyro trilogy
Agree with a lot of your points. They also could have at least added time trials like NST did for C1 and C2, or SOMETHING with higher difficulty, as like you said, the fans of this series are adults now.
The amount of jank that exists in these games is beyond belief. I really wish they gave these games the proper time to actually make the game run better. The fact that they knew all the glaring issues and the PC version improved on none of them was just a disgrace. And the one thing that they advertised (UNLIMITED FPS!!!!) didn't even work, and then they made no efforts to actually fix it which is just sad. I know you barely scratched the surface with how busted these games are, it riles me up when i think about what it could've been
Thanks for pushing back on the assumption that higher resolution visuals and audio make a game better by default. There's got to be good art direction too. I feel the exact same way about Medievil (PS1), which has been remade 3 times and each one is inferior to the original.
No mention of how bursting with life the titles and credits and menus (except Spyro 1) were in the originals compared to Reignited, or the lack of the Epilogues?
I do like the Co-op idea. I had that idea for a fan track I made a while back called Yeti Meadow, a scenario where one player would control Spyro and the other Bentley and the two would help each other out in the level.
One of the most biggest problems I had with the remake was the controls. At first I was like "Oh, it's just taking the controls from the third game and implanting them to the previous games", but it's not even that! As turning while charging/gliding was way to slow! And another thing I noticed (can't remember if the original was like this or not) but in the 2nd game, when I was playing the remake, I decided to go to Elora to teleport in front of a portal to get a talisman I didn't have yet. Instead, she sent me to a level I already fully completed. Also, this might be just me, but it bugs me whenever people say how the best part of the remake was how beautiful it is. Yeah, maybe from afar. But on a few levels (At least in the 2nd and 3rd game) , you can clearly see parts where it doesn't have much of any 'swaying grass' and all that is underneath is just a green ground with no textures. It's literally like you just pull up Microsoft paint, fill the entire screen with a single green color, and call that 'grass'. I know people like Reignited Trilogy, but I will always go back to the original trilogy.
Great vid Dayo! Greater technical horsepower encourages a mindset whereby "more is best". The original trilogy is blessed with an artistic direction that made the most of limited hardware, which comes through in limited but well chosen colours and character designs. In comparison, Reignited just adds everything. More details, more colours, lights, textures, physics effects, and gloss with little consideration for what is actually necessary. The result is an aesthetic that feels disfigured by abundance; it's particularly noticeable in the characters and "Instagram filter" colour palettes. Also, Elora's giant black pupils are horrifying.
I grew up with the originals and to see it squandered in the remake angered me as a die hard fan, heck they didn't even add the original skeleton dance music till it was way too late
1:50, dont forget the biggest problem of all - the camera. In the OG, you could switch it to active and wouldnt need to touch the camera as it always snapped to behind Spyro. In this version, i constantly find myself manually moving the camera so i can see what is ahead of me
@@PandemoniumZ-367I know, but it doesnt work like the active camera in the OG. Reignited’s active camera is just like passive mode - it needs to manually be moved to see what’s ahead of you
the rankings of enjoyment i find from each Spyro game is 3, 2 then 1. Reignited feels like the devs spent more love and time in remaking 1 the most, then 3 feels like the most rushed and they never bothered flushing out many of the bugs, if at all.
I really enjoyed Reignited, but I agree with basically all of your points. Once I hit that 337%, I had a hard time coming back to it. Reignited just doesn't have the same staying power as the original PS trilogy. It is a shame TFB had to rush this thing. Lots of potential to optimize what they made and further expand the world with DLC.
I was excited to play Reignited Trilogy when it came out. I immediately changed from the "Dynamic Soundtrack" back to the original. The load times where annoying (especially when you die), giving me flashbacks to Enter the Dragonfly on PS2; the fidget buttons were a nice addition that made them a little more bearable. Some of the graphic and sound design choices I didn't care for, but there were some additions that I did enjoy (e.g. the bonus whirlwind after you defeat the sorceress). I replay the Spyro trilogy ever year and I still use my PS1 versions to do so; now I only touch Reignited if I'm away from my PS2.
The gliding in this game is weird. There were some glides I missed here that I would’ve made first try in the OG. I agree with the music points. Thank God they gave the option to go back the original OST. I still love reignited tho.
I'm not a glitch hunter, but in my experience, Reignighted runs a much tighter ship when in comes to not having exploits. (Possibly because they can patch them with software updates.) Maybe too tight, with all the invisible walls. (and I don't mean the forcefeilds in Stone Hill and Cliff Town.)
I remember day one I was in Town Square and got launched 1000 feet up in the air just from talking to the first dragon in the stage. I could have easily just flown to the end of the stage if I wanted to lol Also day one, I went into the options and changed to the original soundtrack because I could tell right away I was not going to enjoy the new one as much.
I don't agree with all your points, and that's okay. I still really enjoyed hearing your perspective here. I had limited experience with the classic Spyro games as a kid, but I look back on my time with Spyro and Spyro 3 very fondly. Never did get to play the original Spyro 2. I loved my time with the Reignited Trilogy, and could even see myself playing through it multiple times, eventually. Spyro is a series that I wanna keep coming back to, for sure. I played the remake trilogy way after release, so the game had been patched up by the time I got to it, which was nice. I didn't experience any noticeable bugs, or issues, when I played it, and I played the PC port version on Steam. All that said, I would love to play the original games, as well. I definitely feel like there is room for both to exist and be enjoyed. I'll have to look into the best way to get into the originals.
3:24 If you want the ULTIMATE Spyro Music experience I recommend Mashups by "Commander J Ducky"! 🐉 it merges the Original with the Reignited: I can't go back after listening; cause it has the sound of the Original; but with support from more channels & uncompressed instruments!👍🏾🎵🎶 🎧
I would like to see the Reignighetd character designs, made with the poligon style of the orrigional, (but without the technical constaint of hard poligon limits.)
There are a Lot of things I do genuinely enjoy about reignited. I like the art style, I like seeing how tfb interpreted the different characters and worlds and everything from low poly to high detail. But there are a lot of things I *really* dislike that stop me from replaying it as much as I replayed the originals. The weird purple haze over a lot of levels is really distracting, spyro's movement feels Weird, especially if you're supercharging, swimming, flying.... etc. There's a lot of sound effects that I dislike (changing some iconic enemy noises and NPC voices, which makes them less charming and interesting). I still have yet to go for 120 and 100 in 1 and 2 because I *hate* the flight physics so bad I just dont want to do flight levels im less familiar with (I never did full completion on either in the originals either). I got 117 in reignited 3 but that's because I was Determined to at least fully complete my favorite. I probably will never do that again though. Some of those side missions that I struggled with a little in OG were way harder and more tedious to complete in reignited. Overall I dont think it's a terrible remaster remake whatever but it *definitely* doesnt live up to the originals Edit: I actually went back and looked and I did in fact 100% reignited 2..... i forgot apparently LMAO
Reignited definitely had me feeling like Spyro was slippery... I never enjoyed the new physics and was surprised no one else I knew seemed to mind the literal soapbox controls. Same thing with the music, after hearing a couple of the updated tracks, I had to switch to the old ones. Still completed all three games, but I always go back to the originals on PS1. Less polygons for sure, but the dreamy vibes are unmatched and the sound design (not only the music but also the enemies) feels right. The remake was truly something forgettable in comparison.
You're completely right and you should say it. The moment I saw how they trashed the obvious igneous rock with very visible igneous rock pores in idol springs I realized this remake was not gonna be good. Overall the texture work is definitely what I take the most issue with. All that elaborate stonemasonry replaced with haphazard cobblestone bricks, that was like the most unique feature of the original games' art style! And that's to say nothing of their absolute disregard for the meticulous color theory. It was like they never even read the gamasutra article...
my friend's first introduction to the series and he got gatekept because the wall wouldnt move at 60fps or higher and he was stuck. Good one toys for bob, he really wasnt interested in thhe game after.
I disagree with your opinion but respect it. Except for the skating sections, the physics are just whack and I could never 100% Spyro 3 in Reignited despite doing so multiple times in the OG trilogy.
I repeatedly had issues with YotD Reignited crashing my entire computer earlier this year while trying to get all achievement completion on Steam. It was attempting to verify my purchase at the Epic Game Store instead of Steam, for some reason, and getting so confused by what it was doing that my PC would BSOD. Blocking the EGS authentication servers in my HOSTS file fixed it permanently but... I shouldn't have to do that for a modern game release. Reignited could've been good remake if it had a few more months in the oven, and the fact that the quality slowly falls off a cliff from 1 to 2 to 3 is pretty solid proof that it was an undercooked release. Still wouldn't have been the same as the OGs, but the Crash N. Sane remakes are great (I regularly play both versions of that trilogy) despite their little quirks and differences.
That is the best way to describe it. I NEVER liked the new trilogy, I gave away my PS4 because I found it unplayble. I'm in my mid 40's so it shows my age, gaming to me was gone many years ago and to try the new one felt so sloppy, I don't care about video, give me good quality game play.
Recently had a bug while collecting the last orb of metropolis, where Spyro was oscillating left and right on a diagonal axis during the collection cutscene
I think the worst part about the game's aesthetic changes are that they're so close to being there, the *models* are all fine (everything from the portals to the shrubs, buildings, even the gems). The music is so close to being right too, they just needed to recreate the original instruments as close as possible with higher quality, that's it. Naturally the game also needs a few toggles for 'original graphics', 'original music' etc for posterity. But it's something like 80-90% the way there.
If you lock the framerate to 120 on the nvidia control panel and set it to unlimited in-game it won't have many of these bugs at 120 fps. I have no idea what they did to make it break. I generaly have no issue with any of the art at least in the first game, it's just the locked FOV, the uneven vertical and horizontal sensitivities when using a mouse and the high fps problems that really bugged me.
I think the original Spyro series is the biggest example of less is more. The added details and higher quality graphics in reignited makes the game so much less appealing. It doesnt accentuate those stark contrasting colours like in the original (think green acid, dark blue sky and brown ships in lost fleet) that made the game feel so dream like and explorable. Having everything the same level of detail means its harder to highlight focal points and draw audiences into what youre supposed to be looking at, or looking for. It quite honestly felt like an assault to the senses to me, in a very underwhelming way.
Insomniac knew their stuff back in the day, hell should hear the witchcraft they put into Ratchet and Clank, made it an absolute nightmare to emulate properly last I heard :b It's certainly a mixed bag of an experience, like it's certainly great but there's enough nuggets of disappointment and/or annoyance to sour the experience as a whole, you know? Amazing all the same and definitely deserved better :) Hurricos, my beloved
At the end of the video, you acknowledge your nostalgia and your overall bias. Before in the video, you also mention you are a Spyro speedrunner. That should've been disclosed in the beginning. Much of your "opinions" are blinded by such positions. An introduction would’ve been nice to start. To share a bit about me, I’m an indie game developer of four years. I’m currently working on a project heavily inspired by Spyro’s Reignited Trilogy, down the graphics and general game design. I’ve also written a research paper about the 3d platformer genre, in addition to extensively researching it. I grew up with the Skylanders series but love the Reignited Trilogy as well. I am not a speed runner nor did I grow up with PS1 Spyro. I can agree that "more time in the oven" would've been good, but split screen and co-op go against the game's design and overall developer intent. The game wasn't made for multiplayer. Neither the original nor the reignited version. If it was shoe-horned in, that'd be bad, right? The game's design is focused on single-player systems, like most games in the 3d platformer collect-a-thon genre. Multiplayer would be an aspect to bring into the level design. Custom maps would be awesome, but is that really in Spyro's realm here? Would mods not satisfy your recommendations thus far? The amount of time it'd take to create a user-facing product for map creation with terrain tools and whatnot.. scope's a big one here. Being able to switch to the original graphics would be interesting, I agree. Since I didn't make the game, I can't tell you a concrete objection to the feature. That said, we live in a different era. Imitation and inspiration are what Toys for Bob did, not just imitation. I think you’d appreciate the original PS1 graphics compared to an imitation of them. You frequently say "But that's my opinion" which could’ve led to more objective critiques. To give credit where it's due, you mention the physics issues (agree with that one) and some other things (which I’ll get into). I enjoy the character designs and think they mostly fit the stylized environment. I say mostly as some textures could’ve been more stylized. Would you say Spyro is too stylized compared to the environment? I wonder if this is a texturing difference thing or general art direction. The issue of the environment obstructing gems should be solved by making gems more noticeable imo. The grass being the way it is, fluffy in the traditional stylized way it is, adds to that look I enjoy so much. Load times are a complicated problem, but in short, you can go the visually appealing route or the “quick” route. There can be a balance, but there’s still a decision. I can have pop-in or I can be extra sure stuff looks good to the player before they see it. Due to the game focusing on visuals, I think they hit a good mark. I’m sure more optimizations could be made, again with more time, big I digress. To the point of Spyro’s target audience being older, the 3d platformer collect-a-thon was indeed a big thing in the early 2000s. Those people are older, but the general focus and audience for that genre is still younger fans. Those first Spyro games appealed to that younger audience, in addition to older ones, but games need a “target”. The console Spyro games after the first three games were a response to that aging audience and the growing edginess of the 2010s. To your point of the community “wanting to create [their] own levels and challenges”, I’d beg to differ until given proof otherwise. Just because you do doesn’t mean most do. Based the the reviews on Steam and TH-cam that I’ve scoured, I didn’t get that impression. Most wanted the camera, physics, and some movement improved.
I'd also like my baby dragon in 3, to be back to the OG... Spike's Area, dragon egg 'Monique' was my highlight as a child. Seeing a tiny little dragon pop out and try to eat the butterfly, was adorable... Now it's a skaterboi dragon..? Eh?
I will say the music shift from old to new took a bit getting use to but Tiger Train i feel got better and it occasionally comes up on my spotify and I can help but crank that up.
Thank you for linking the music playist! That's super helpful bc otherwise I would be trying to find that music for hours! Also, yeah I always thought Reignited was off, totally agree with all of it, even if that might be a minority opinion (idk). I will always believe PS1 spyro 1 is the best! Good luck on your speedruns and long live PS1 spyro 1!
I have good memories with Spyro. I just thank my father a lot for brining a PS1 console a long with plenty of demo discs that I really enjoyed. Spyro was there and I enjoyed it a lot.
I agree with everything you said in this video. I think I said it in the comment section under different video but I'll say it again, the main problem is that OG Spyro was made to be a great game and give you fun game experience but SRT was made to be shiny marketable product that you can sell to a Spyro fanbase.
**I do not hate this game, and if you like it, I appreciate where you are coming from.**
Some inaccuracies/clarifications in this vid below:
Physics - There's nothing inherently wrong with the unreal engine.
I am not trying to convince you guys to agree with me.
all in all it was a good video :)
@@Dayoman I think at this point you might just wanna redo the whole script if your PS Note is this long
I mean it might not take away from your criticism of the music because you personally don't like the new tracks as much, but it does directly take away from your criticism that they should add a way to go back to the original music when it's literally already an option in the game.
@Dayoman well said. Thanks for the great content! I am LOVING it
Thank you for the clarification post. I will end this here, as my rant comment should suffice, but it really feels good to know others see the differences.
the fact that reignited is so poorly optimised is an absolute tragedy considering the original games were trailblazers in their optimisation and visual fidelity at such a stable framerate for the time
Whenever I would pause on reignited on PS4, the PS4 fan would go into hyper drive mode.
I did not have those problems on Pc
No problem on ps5. Clean your console guys once a while. It helps
JUSTICE FOR THE CYCLOPS PUPPY NOISES!
for those of us who played the original games lots as kids (and adults), little things like this stands out, especially the sounds.
No wayayayow in colossus… what’s the point… it feels dumb to nitpick but it’s like having a dream after playing spyro too long lol
I disprove both these remakes.)
All these remakes keep missing the point and making series more childish than they were and intended to be. One of MANY reasons why I don't want a Jak and Daxter remake, even moreso when looking at R&C's 2016 one (and Spyro).
Agree for the most part but you failed to mention the greatest sin of Reignited which was getting rid of the WHYAYAYOWM chanting from the guys in Colossus
oh yeah. wiyiyiyow, wiyiyiyow
I love Reignited for what it is but yeah, this was a travesty. As was drastically changing the way "Trouble with the trolley eh?!" is said.
@@benzo9059there’s a mod to restore that
Truly unacceptable
take a drink every time dayo points to clearly very stylized environmental design and calls it hyperrealistic
Im drunk now thanks
Yeah i was kinda annoyed by this too, like did you play the Crash remakes?
I did not understand this entire point since he said the styles clashes when they didn't at all, nor was it hyperrealistic
8:43 feels disingenuous, it wasn't their decision to get funneled into being support for whatever AAA dumpster fire they're working on
that blame rests squarely on activision management
there are 3 reasons i prefer the originals
1: The physics. Controls feel too different.
2: The grass hides all the gems.
3: The game LITERALLY does not work unless you limit FPS to 60. Progression blocking bugs.
most especially water and flying physics. It... ugh. blehg. bad.
Disappointing they haven't fixed those progression blocking glitches.
1) The controls feel stiff to me and Inhate having to move the camera with the shoulder buttons. At leasted Reignited gives me the option to breath fire with R2
2) Just use Sparx to find the gems that you're missing
3) I can't comment on that because I don't have a frame rate fetish
I just replayed 1 and 2 on PS4 and in both games I was having issues with gems falling through the ground or getting stuck in the air. Seems like very minor issues that could be fixed easily in a patch, but they just haven't yet?
4: No analog control, Spyro just snaps into 8 directions.
I strictly play with old music. 😎
@ 👍💩
I like the Reignited Trilogy, I really like it.
But I *_love_* the PS1 Spyro games, to a degree that Reignited just can't stand up to.
Am I seriously the only one who hasn't encountered a single glitch while playing?
I haven’t had any
You can stand on the side of the ice cavern portal in spyro 1.
Nope
The loading times on the Switch version takes about 5-10 seconds longer than the PS4 version
The consequences of tying framerate to physics continues to be felt. I get why developers do it. Doesn't make it any less frustrating.
@@TheMeGuy1you can switch to the retro OST, you know
They definitely went overboard with some of the new designs.
My recommended mods for PC (from NexusMods):
Sparx Light (awesome real-time lighting from Sparx that shines on the environment), 60 FPS water, Classic Font (3D text and HUD), Classic sounds, Classic Crystal Dragon, Metal Vase Model Swap.
The most egregious problem that persists in the Reignited Trilogy is the fact that Sparx *STILL* ignores gems. How is that still a problem in 2024?
Tbh I never had that problem 🤷♂️
Yeah, when jumping sparx won't pick up gems
Ignores? In what regard? You press a button and he points toward the general direction of ones you haven't collected.
For clarification, this is what I mean. It still persists in 2024 across multiple levels.

90's programmers - artists. Modern programmers - corporation workers
Wild because I 100%'d the whole thing and never experienced a single bug. Worked great for me and I loved it.
Well, by the end of 100% completion of 3rd game it's gets very buggy and unpolished.
That slow zoom towards the night-blue skybox fading into the blue lighting of your backdrop was so satisfying to me 💙 10:40 So prettyyyyy ✨
I really appreciate your honest opinion.
Too many people are afraid to speak negatively, and that resulkts in no critiques, and bad games being OKd
Oh no wonder the Skateboarding felt off. Now I know why.
Sane Trilogy, as it needed more time than Crash.
seems I'm not the only one experiencing glitches not found in the PS1 versions
To be honest, whether it's the original PS1 games or reignited, I'm still having fun regardless of which versions I play Because I love the Spyro trilogy
Excited to see the videos on the aesthetics of spyro. Seriously everything about the presentation if these games is beautiful
I love that you started with load times. They truly are agonizing.
gives you time to think about life or check your smartphone....again and again....lol.
I'll never understand why they took the "HUAEAEAEAU HUAEAEAEAU" from us
Agree with a lot of your points.
Those spyro skateboard eggs were made SO MUCH easier in the remake.. I could finally beat that stupid final challange
As someone who has thousands of hours in both the originals and the reignited trilogy, I think it's pretty good.
In this version, i constantly find myself manually moving the camera so i can see what is ahead of me
There is an active camera mode.
@@PandemoniumZ-367I know, but it doesnt work like the active camera in the OG.
Reignited’s active camera is just like passive mode - it needs to manually be moved to see what’s ahead of you
One of my peeves with the Reignited trilogy is they made the gems Sounds so generic.
Back in the day we had Roll in Air and it was basically Reignited's equivalent of Swim in Air, but that got patched too. :(
the rankings of enjoyment i find from each Spyro game is 3, 2 then 1.
Getting the skating skill point in Lost Fleet is the worst
I'm not a glitch hunter, but in my experience, Reignighted runs a much tighter ship when in comes to not having exploits. (Possibly because they can patch them with software updates.) Maybe too tight, with all the invisible walls.
(and I don't mean the forcefeilds in Stone Hill and Cliff Town.)
I remember day one I was in Town Square and got launched 1000 feet up in the air just from talking to the first dragon in the stage. I could have easily just flown to the end of the stage if I wanted to lol
Also day one, I went into the options and changed to the original soundtrack because I could tell right away I was not going to enjoy the new one as much.
Banger vid cant wait to derail other conversations in the live chat later to talk about it
The skateboarding physics in Reignited pretty much killed my hype for Enchanted Towers. And don’t get me started on Lost Fleet!
I would like to see the Reignighetd character designs, made with the poligon style of the orrigional, (but without the technical constaint of hard poligon limits.)
About One Of My Complaints About The Reignited Trilogy That They Made Spike Too Easy To Defeat In Spyro 3…😠
Overall I dont think it's a terrible remaster remake whatever but it *definitely* doesnt live up to the originals
Edit: I actually went back and looked and I did in fact 100% reignited 2..... i forgot apparently LMAO
Showing more results why
New but Better Creative
Opportunities should take
Place in the New SPYRO 4
I disagree with your opinion but respect it. Except for the skating sections, the physics are just whack and I could never 100% Spyro 3 in Reignited despite doing so multiple times in the OG trilogy.
love the edited content man! gratz on WR btw
Dayo never missed. Looking forward to the next Spyro 2+3 vibe videos homie
Something extra that bothered me about the Spyro Reignited Trilogy was Spyro's horns facing more upwards while he runs or rams into objects.
You know, I think I actually played reignited, but totally forgot. that I did ..
Did you know you ca change the music to the original soundtrack?
I think the original Spyro series is the biggest example of less is more. The added details and higher quality graphics in reignited makes the game so much less appealing. It doesnt accentuate those stark contrasting colours like in the original (think green acid, dark blue sky and brown ships in lost fleet) that made the game feel so dream like and explorable. Having everything the same level of detail means its harder to highlight focal points and draw audiences into what youre supposed to be looking at, or looking for. It quite honestly felt like an assault to the senses to me, in a very underwhelming way.
Insomniac knew their stuff back in the day, hell should hear the witchcraft they put into Ratchet and Clank, made it an absolute nightmare to emulate properly last I heard :b
It's certainly a mixed bag of an experience, like it's certainly great but there's enough nuggets of disappointment and/or annoyance to sour the experience as a whole, you know? Amazing all the same and definitely deserved better :)
Hurricos, my beloved
Here for the opinion that opens the rift gate.
In reignited’s defence, you can switch between the old sound tract and new sound track.
I agree with everything you said in this video. I think I said it in the comment section under different video but I'll say it again, the main problem is that OG Spyro was made to be a great game and give you fun game experience but SRT was made to be shiny marketable product that you can sell to a Spyro fanbase.
The original soundtrack is in the game. Just change it in the pause menu, which made this better than the crash remakes. 😅
