Our FD RX7 Project | Ep 1 [OFF THE RECORD]

  • You know you have a problem when you're 'not a rotary guy at heart' yet just happen to own two FD3S RX7's 😂
    To keep Brandon sane during weeks lockdown here in New Zealand he has been working on his modelling skills. There was a lack of interested in this, so he quickly moved onto 3D modelling to make the most of our new 3D printer which has been much more fruitful enabling us to put it to work on various projects around HPA labs. A mount to hold part of the new DBW throttle system is the first test and you can enjoy the nice pressure-free environment of his boss and a camera to find out if he managed to deliver or not...
    Andre also takes us a little behind the scenes in this first episode of [OFF THE RECORD] and gives a rundown on how the FD3S RX7 build came about, Turblown and Vinny Fabs involvement along with why our original red RX7 was put to the side.
    We're hoping to make updates like this on the regular if you like em or hate em let us know along with anything you might like to see covered.

      @@honkiebikedude haha no I actually have always had a soft spot for rotaries and the FD chassis in particular. The thing that gives rotary engines a bad reputation is that everyone thinks they can build their own engine in the back shed with a hammer, a chisel and a bent spoon, and then they take them to tuners who try and tune them like a piston engine. The results are predictably terrible - Andre

    2:35 - nice delivery! Better follow up 2:40!

    Wish u guys went with mounting the dbw under the uim. Would love to get one of those and retain my ac.
    Also, much respect to Andy and Adaptronic and what they've accomplished. I had the Modular on my car and had pretty good results with it, but more recently swapped over to the Haltech Elite 1500 and have to say, I prefer the Elite. It's a more polished solution with better software configurability and their support seems to be better at this point. I'd recommend that you guys produce rotary content with the Haltech as it'll probably reach a wider audience and be more relevant going forward. I'm sure Andy won't mind too much as he's a part of Haltech now ;)

    • @Popes_Projects
      @Popes_Projects 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Douglas Jardine you can just use Full Function Engineering’s adapter and run a Chevy LS DBW throttle body. Much easier install and despite being huge, mine isles just fine.
      I’ve heard that the Adaptronic support and development as suffered greatly from Andy’s move to Haltech. No personal experience though, still the only PnP option for my Rx8 so 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Are those standard industrial Honeywell pressure transducers for the back-pressure sensing?
    I've built a couple compression testers with them and wondered if they'd be suitable to performing back-pressure testing, but the heat was a worry. Is that the reason for the extensive lines and remote mounting?
    Do you use the same sensors on the intake side to measure intake and port restrictions?

    • @hpa101
      @hpa101  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, just the typical 150 psi Honeywell sensor. The trick is to get the heat out of the sensor which is achieved with the coiled line running to them. The same style of sensor but with a more appropriate range can be used on the intake side.

You are an awesome guy and I really appreciated the service that you gave me when you owned Speedtech in wellington. I have one small suggestion / request. I watch your videos in the evening when there is nothing much to watch on broadcast tv. Lets face it that is a lot of the time. My partner who is the most awesome person I have ever met and who managed to manage her mental illness to sail over 5000 miles around the the south pacific with me overhears what you say. She has struggled with OCD her whole adult life and when you say you are OCD about you FD it makes her feel belittled. I realize that is not your intention but please understand that this is an awful thing and people struggle with it in a way that we really can't understand or thankfully never will. So please...... Be obsessive, passionate, focused .... or anything but please not OCD that is an aweful disease that you would not inflict on your worst enemy.

      In my FD I run pump E85 only though which burns cooler and it's been reliable for 3 years so far with over 500whp, with very little fuel dilution between service intervals.

It is however the perfect size for pump gas and this turbo which is what they intend to use mainly, so perhaps they don’t intend to go for big power on ethanol. It is a stock engine after all.

      They mentioned that they would be running. E85 down the road.
      My 380hp was on a 7670 on a stock motor. Had I had bigger injectors or 2 more 1700(do now) hp would have been easily over 400. Boost and timing had to be tapped down from about 6k to keep injector duty cycle happy.
      With them running the 8474 they may as well plan for the power that turbo can make on e85 now vs having to upgrade again down the road
      Just my personal opinion

      Stuart Milne isn’t that the same concept as the 6 port Renesis uses? Granted it’s not P-Port, but the same idea. While it does increase power slightly, it’s only marginally down low on a NA motor. Seems like a lot of work to fill in the powerband on a semi-pp, why not just run a little more boost on a large street port and achieve the same result?

      Haha wasn't the intention. There's nothing wrong with rotaries at all. The reason rotaries have a bad reputation is because so many people think they can slap their own engine together using a bent spoon and a toothpick, then they take them to a tuner who tries to tune them like a piston engine and the results are predictable. When built and tuned correctly they can offer great power and reliability.
