    Grew up in Chicago, a Cubs fan. The first time I ever went to Wrigley was for a double-header against the Giants. Watched in awe as Willie put on a show in BP, stroking pitch after pitch onto Waveland Avenue. Saw him score from first base on a single. He is the most exciting player I have ever seen play the game.

    In 1965, we used to play stickball in Philly. Get some chalk, draw a square on a building, find a tennis ball and a broom stick. Game on! I was just getting into baseball when I read an article (I think Highlights magazine) about how Willie would stop and play stick ball with the local kids on the way to the game in NY. I thought that was so cool and from then on he was my favorite. Amazing athlete.

    When I was a kid in the 1970s, we moved from the Bay Area to New York State. My mom had family there. I got beat up by a Yankee fan for saying that the Say Hey kid was better than DiMaggio and Mantle… I’d take that beating again. His actions and professionalism helped shape me.

    Willie will always be my favourite baseball player and he was spectacular and a model of sharing his talents. My 2nd fav is Roberto Clemente. I mention this because Willie said, while not counting himself in the voting, that he thought Clemente was the most talented performer. I noticed Willie chose a multi-talented player, similar to himself.
    Another amazing thing about Mays is that he missed about 266 games in the early 50s due to military service. That’s a tough interruption!

    I'm a life long Giants fan and so were my parents. My mothers grandmother was born in 1879 and grew up 3 blocks from the Polo Grounds in Northern Manhattan. She and her brothers practically lived at the Polo Grounds. I saw Willie Mays play plenty of times begining back on April 18 1968 at Shea Stadium in Queens NY. Gaylord Perry vs Don Cardwell. Mays was a great player but "the greatest player of all time" may be overstating it. Considering Ty Cobb, Ruth and Honus Wagner also played baseball and the numbers don't lie. The best Giants manager was John McGraw and he said that Honus Wagner was the best player he ever saw. He never saw Mays play though. I can say the same about Willie Mays. He did everything and he did everything well! He IS the best player that I ever saw period. Of course I never saw the other players in this discussion and there is a political element to this HBO show as there always is with them, make no mistake! That's why I can say that he's probably not the best player ever. FYI, Alvin Dark was the Giants Captain. The last one that they had.

    • @movetherunner

      Willie Mays was better than all of them. Willie Mays was a true 5 tool player. Willie Mays did everything as well or better than anyone.

    • @karlheinzvonkroemann2217
      @karlheinzvonkroemann2217 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@movetherunner YOU didn't them all, nor did you see any of other greats that weren't mentioned here. WE don't know that Mays was better at everything having to do with a baseball and we never will. Your's is a statement of "feeling" not fact. A fact is that Ty Cobb out hit Willie Mays by 60 point in batting average. So Mays was a better hitter? You see Joe Jackson? Ever even hear him?

    • @4orrcountry
      @4orrcountry ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@karlheinzvonkroemann2217 False, Karl. I can say Mays is the best baseball player of all-time because I've NEVER heard of ANY other ballplayer being referred to as the best 5-tool player, other than Mays.
