A few units may have disappeared (512 for example), but the majority of the ones that were moved from the deadline track seem to have filtered back into the rest. They did some track work recently, and probably needed to get some engines out of the way. While I doubt any of these units will see Amtrak service again, some don't look to be too bad cosmetically and might find a home at a museum or heritage railroad. Shortly after I started watching American railroads using VR cams from Japan, I saw on the news an accident in which P42s 133 and 166, which were assigned to the Southwest Chief, collided with a dump truck at a railroad crossing in Mendan. Sightseer Lounges are returning to the Texas Eagle in October per Amtrak’s operating plan. No plans have been announced yet to return them to the Capitol. It has to be because Amtrak is reactivating enough lounges to expand deployment to only 1 additional route in this case the Eagle. I’m worried that the Capitol will be stuck without a lounge for good!

That one Superliner car in Phase III striping -- how long has THAT been there?!?! Also interesting that there are no Amfleets here. In terms of the locos, it would be interesting to know which ones are getting retired and which ones are getting the Phase VII repaints. I know at least one P42 that's in Phase VII livery. Also, why is there no one around? Was this video taken during a weekend?
I wish I had information on the cars and locomotives here. I shot it on a Saturday. I always try to go on an off day so I don't have to worry about anyone being outside when I am getting video.
@@nkyrailfan yes Amfleets are Wilmington. Sadly, they have reached their FRA expiration dates too. The new Airo sets are unit trains, so when one car goes bad the whole train set goes out. Like Talgo, gonna be difficult to maintain and very costly.
@@Chuck-dq2ffthat’s not entirely the case. Some Siemens Venture and Airo cars will be married pairs, but other cars will be individual coaches that can be swapped out depending on the availability of cars. Otherwise, there is a high likelihood the whole trainset has to be pulled for maintenance which is rather absurd.
Just a few years ago, we saw a group of old, maybe pullman-type cars sitting on off tracks in Bellows Falls, New Hampshire. Wondered why they were just sitting, rusting away.
2:31 It's Amtrak Pacific Surfliner cab car 6902, the cab car unit that crashed into a tractor at a railroad crossing near Oxnard back in 2001. The crash resulted in oil from the tractor to spill on the cab car's front end, setting the whole front of the cab car on fire. It sucks that Amtrak Surfliner cab car 6902 was short lived, a year after Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner rail service began in 2000. If cab car 6902 were to get repaired and brought back to service, the "Point Pinos" or "Point Fermin" name would be assigned to that unit.
As venture cars take over. Some horizons have been relocated. A few are on the downeaster. Some are down in New Orleans to be used for a new service to mobile and many others are on the cascades serving as a temporary replacement to the talgo 6 trains which were declared unsafe following the point defiance bypass derailment.
Also Amtrak: Deploying Sightseer Lounges on the Illini and Saluki trains for non revenue signal triggering cars. At least Amtrak is restoring the Eagle’s lounge in October. But it takes them over 3 years to finally get this implemented. It took them only 2 months to restore daily service, only 3 months to restore traditional dining to all western routes except for the Eagle. I remember back in August of 2021 taking to a railfan on board the Eagle who was told by the conductor the lounge was returning “ hopefully later in the year.”

Amtrak has a LOT of Equipment so it’s Nice to See where they Maintain ALL of this Equipment. GOD knows their Units have plenty of issues in the field. 🤔
So sad to see 156 in the deadline. Remember her in Scranton at the Steamtown NHS: Lackawanna Railfest 2012 and showing up in vids all over the country. See the center-cab 80-ton switcher (1100) is still there. Wish some deserving organizations can save and operate them. Hope the people onboard healed better than these locos and cars.
Hate to hurt anyone's feelings but NONE of the trains in the back there with the wrecked cars will ever be used again. That area is referred to as "The Boneyard." They're either sold, being sold, or used for parts and eventually scrapped.
Will you make another video sometime this fall to see the progress made at Beech Grove in the meantime? An article published by trains news wire reveals that most of the Superliners stored during Covid haven’t been returned to service! Going into fiscal year 2025 shop forces will be diverting a lot of resources to repairing 22 Superliners that have been damaged in five derailments since 2020! 10 additional ones involved have already been repaired! I’ve heard that a sleeping car, hauled out of Beech Grove to Chicago just a couple weeks ago was the first car involved in the Empire Builder derailment in 2021 to be returned to service!
@@nkyrailfan Most likely scheduled maintenance. But as for the baggage cars, they really need to go where they are known best. Hialeah. Where every one of them has been at one time. Before they were allowed to be used, they went thru the Amtrak shops there.
Back in the early 2000's, there was still the "Night Owl" train from VA up to Boston. You would arrive in Boston around 7 or so AM. I took that several times to attend a convention up in Portland Maine. The big problem: The yard where Amtrak parked the cars during the day didn't do the basics.. like provide heating for the cars that were parked outdoors in sub freezing temperatures. First year: no problems. Second year: They "forgot" to hook up heating and all the pipes froze and drenched the inside of the car. Luckily, nothing stinky, but still a problem for those of us intending on sleep. The next year? No problems on the northbound trip. Sleeper had no issues.. But when it came to the trip back south? AGAIN they hadn't bothered to hook up the yard heating... and had left the "sanitary" system full, so this time when it froze, the entire car will apparently filled with sewerage. And bad ordered. After that, the sleepers were removed and no longer went to Boston. I suspect that was a result of orders from Higher Ups from my impressions at the Amtrak lounge talking to the folk up there. Get rid of the sleeper? Get rid of the Night Owl entirely.. I suspect that the multiple sleepers they killed up there (at least 2 of them.. possibly more) went to Beech Grove for 'repairs"... no idea if that ever happened.
Wow! I had no idea about the night owl. That sounds like a great way to get to Boston. That's crazy though about leaving the cars out in the cold and the issues that came from doing so.
@@nkyrailfan I know. My sister invited me to the Mad Hatter's Tea Party for the last 5 or 6 years of her life. First time I grabbed the Carolinian to get to DC.. had a great time in the station there.. had a great meal, then grabbed the Night Owl to get to Boston. Coming back, everything went smoothly. The next year: Going up? no problems...but when it was time to head back south (Monday after the convention) they announced that the car had frozen plumbing. THen the next year? It had a total failure of the waste water system, leaving the car filled with Poop. Two years in a row? Followed by the sleeper getting removed permanently. I am reasonably certain that it wasn't a yard crew insurrection. It had to be Amtrak Management not paying attention and keeping their equipment in a proper condition. I ended up driving or flying after that, because no sleeper was available.
A whack-a-do nutjob posted a video here on TH-cam of footage she shot back when Amtrak first acquired BG. They videoed the employee parking area, noting the significance of the way the barbed wire along the top pointed (in or out) that "confirmed" it was for prisoners, identified an old DODX switcher as "evidence" of nefarious intent, and identified some large blower or other equipment housing as the exteriors of "crematories" where all the "FEMA prisoners" would eventually meet their fate. I can't find the video anymore, so it may have long since been taken down or maybe the channel closed. Also, don't forget that all those enclosed auto-rack cars are also "FEMA prisoner transports"!
So, I'm not sure exactly what they do at Beech Grove because I went in there once for a tour and it's like the government doesn't put enough money into the facility so the maintenance staff just sits around most days.😊
It seems like they just let these locomotives rot there and Amtrak doesn’t actually repair them, most of these locomotives look repairable indeed, unless there are internal issues that we can’t see.
There are 23 Superliners coming back to service this fiscal year: 5 coaches, 3 sleepers, 9 transition sleepers, 1 diner, and 5 Sightseer Lounges. For single level equipment; 18 Horizon coaches, 1 Amfleet II coach, 2 Amfleet Cafes, 7 Viewliner baggage cars, 5 Viewliner II diners, and 10 Viewliner I sleepers.
Not aware of any locomotives being sold or scrapped since the P40 deal with LTE. But parts are being cannibalized to keep around 140 P42s in operation currently. If 125 new Siemens long distance Chargers are eventually delivered as planned, Amtrak will still need about 100 P42s to maintain existing routes. Then you lose about 5-10 locomotives a year to road strikes. So the 30 year old GE’s will have to be maintained, or there will be train-offs. An alternative would be to double the Siemens order to 250 instead of125, but that will not happen with the existing situation in Congress. As for Superliners, Beech Grove is scraping the bottom of the proverbial barrel. Indiana politics has not helped, because the desire is to attract a more sexy employment base. Railroading is not a high priority. Instead the state is building $60 million truck stops so that semi drivers and trucking company magnates will have a taxpayer-funded place to rest their weary bones.
This article has information on the crash that led to the fire that destroyed the car: www.rgj.com/story/news/2016/01/27/45m-award-amtrak-upheld-deadly-nevada-truck-crash/79429188/
The flyover looks to static, like it's a model. The track layout looks to HO'ish and I see no movement in the yard and very few automobiles in the front parking lot as say compared to a satellite photo. The only redeeming factors were the two moving cars captured at 9:29 & 18:09.

most museums cant foot the budget to move these and to get them in acceptable condition for a road to want it transported on their track and will cost alot 90 percent of museums the host road donates the labor to help move em
Amtrak's big wigs, in Union Station, are making all kinds of noises about increasing ridership. So why are so many of these cars just sitting here. Take the badly dmaged cars, part them out, and use the parts to repair lightly damaged cars. They have done it before. They can do it again! Oh! Thats right! There aren't any railroaders left upstairs. Most have fancy nancy resumes and know somebody on Capital Hill! Sorry! The amount of equipment that Amtrak has sitting here, and the need on the rails, obviously bugs me. 😢
I wouldn't be surprised to see nine Horizons and six P42 allocated to the Mardi Gras service (two trainsets for daily use and one complete backup). Which other near term corridors are plausable?
@@daniellewis1789 well for more light traveled corridors the horizons might make sense i actually dont like the superliners as they are hard to get up and down those tiny stairs
it's likely difficult to get trackage agreements with host railroads, find the crews to run the shop runs, etc. It's most likely just convenient to connect them to a scheduled train already heading to/from Chicago

It has to be because Amtrak is reactivating enough lounges to expand deployment to only 1 additional route in this case the Eagle. I’m worried that the Capitol will be stuck without a lounge for good!
@@johnsons74thsquadron74 I’ll just keep my fingers crossed that the Superliner replacement has enough sightseer lounges for every train lol.
so sad that both my fav units (156 and 42) are sitting in this condition, i hope they enter service again one day.....
They never will, all genesis engines that have been wrecked/damaged are being retired and replaced with chargers.
@@TrainStreet aww :(
66 and 156 for example have bent frames from grade crossing related accidents, and 42 was an unreliable shop queen. Sadly the nice looking units won’t be back
@@TrinityCourtStudios I found that 156 is still in operation as unit 161, which is the same paint but has a 50th anniversary sticker placed on its side
I so miss the times when NPCU 90222 was assigned to the Heartland Flyer!!😭
I miss when it ran on the Hiawatha 😢

Look at all those P42s.... you will be missed.
Nice one!
All three of them mp15s had a mix of problems lol 536 ran but had main gen issues 531 oil stacked really bad 532 was missing parts and was gonna get fixed and halfway through fixing it they said ship it
Actually, I am not actually far from Beech Grove. I live around that area but around German church Road There is a set of railroad tracks connected, though I believe if I’m not mistaken
would love to have one of the big cars and convert it to a place to live or a place for my Model railroad.
sadly it would be way to expensive to buy one and ship it here to Germany XD
That one Superliner car in Phase III striping -- how long has THAT been there?!?! Also interesting that there are no Amfleets here.
In terms of the locos, it would be interesting to know which ones are getting retired and which ones are getting the Phase VII repaints. I know at least one P42 that's in Phase VII livery. Also, why is there no one around? Was this video taken during a weekend?
I bet the amfleets are worked on in Delaware and 30th street station.
Are the ex F40 NPCU'S being taken out of service? There sure looks to be a lot of them at the shop.
What a shame.
That seems to be the case for a lot of cars and locomotives across the country.
Is it possible that engine 800 still has it's original painting (that it's not a heritage unit)?
Wonder if Genesis P42DC #1 is in this facility... it's been out of service since 2017 for hitting a snowplow truck 😢
1 is there. It’s one of the units in the farthest back row, with its number covered by the other units.
Thanks for the great info!
I really do appreciate it.
Amtrak: "We cannot return the Sightseer Lounge to the Texas Eagle because of an equipment shortage."
Also Amtrak:
Also Amtrak: Deploying Sightseer Lounges on the Illini and Saluki trains for non revenue signal triggering cars.
At least Amtrak is restoring the Eagle’s lounge in October. But it takes them over 3 years to finally get this implemented. It took them only 2 months to restore daily service, only 3 months to restore traditional dining to all western routes except for the Eagle. I remember back in August of 2021 taking to a railfan on board the Eagle who was told by the conductor the lounge was returning “ hopefully later in the year.”
It's coming back in October? First I've heard of this! Doesn't help me though, as I'm riding in May.

Bro I'm bout to start crying!
Amtrak has a LOT of Equipment so it’s Nice to See where they Maintain ALL of this Equipment. GOD knows their Units have plenty of issues in the field. 🤔
I saw #9 kicking around with a busted nose. She was the first engine i ran once i was set up.
This goes to show that every time you see a train, no matter how common, it may be one of or the last time you see it 😅
So sad to see 156 in the deadline.
At 16:22, you can see that 133 and 166 are still together after their accident on the Southwest Chief back in mid 2022
Wow, that's a lot of Viewliners out of service.
Any organizational plan? At Amtrak?
I'll do my best to get back up there.
I'd love to find a worker at the facility to get some more information on how things are going.
I am surprised AMTK 156, 66, 197, 42 and 822 are still there.

@4:19 superliner damage from a 1999 vehicle strike. Wonder what BG is waiting on.
I was surprised to see the Viewliner baggage and Viewlineer II sleepers. Can they have suffered terminal damage in such a short time?
I wouldn't think so.
My guess is they're in for some sort of upgrade or scheduled maintenance.
They all look in really good shape.
@@nkyrailfan Most likely scheduled maintenance. But as for the baggage cars, they really need to go where they are known best. Hialeah. Where every one of them has been at one time. Before they were allowed to be used, they went thru the Amtrak shops there.

Those Genesis GE Locomotives, they should turn them into baggage cab car.
184 is supposedly being converted for Downeaster. At RSR shop
Had a coworker try to tell me BG was a FEMA camp! 😂😂😅
😂😂😂
Lol, I've heard that too.
Excellent views of the equipment in the yard. Would it be possible on the next trip to take stills of each of the cars which show the car numbers?
I'll do my best to try and remember to get still pictures the next time I check out the facility.
looks like a model railroad diorama
I see 42 (Veteran's Livery) is there. I wonder what its status is.
So, I'm not sure exactly what they do at Beech Grove because I went in there once for a tour and it's like the government doesn't put enough money into the facility so the maintenance staff just sits around most days.😊
How did you get a tour? I tried to get one last year but wasn’t able to
It seems like they just let these locomotives rot there and Amtrak doesn’t actually repair them, most of these locomotives look repairable indeed, unless there are internal issues that we can’t see.
Nice video
8:38, what is that black roof near the building in the background? looks like a P42DC or something
Whatever it is, it's wearing a Phase III paint scheme. It may be #145.

That is indeed 822, which was retired some time back. 145 is still in service.

2nd comment from me, what brand of drone are you using?
I use a DJI Mavic 3 Pro.
It has three cameras on it allowing the wide, medium and tight shots.
It is by far the best drone I have ever used.
9 there too
Let’s hope or pray that Amtrak fully restores all of its stuff
Those poor f40ph's ,and p42's 🥺
Don’t forget the P40’s
There are 61000 series baggage cars there. How long they were built
I believe they were built in 2012 by CAF USA.

The flyover looks to static, like it's a model. The track layout looks to HO'ish and I see no movement in the yard and very few automobiles in the front parking lot as say compared to a satellite photo. The only redeeming factors were the two moving cars captured at 9:29 & 18:09.

That seems to be the plan
Yes
I've noticed that many of these units are being dismantled.
Stripping wreck damaged cars for parts just makes good sense, if the car body is compromised beyond reasonable repair.
90208. Also, still there.
Quite disappointed that Amtrak hasn’t thought of donating any of the functioning engines to museums. Possibly the wrecked units for crash history?
Moving them is a nontrivial endeavor and probably outside most smaller museums' budgets.
most museums cant foot the budget to move these and to get them in acceptable condition for a road to want it transported on their track and will cost alot 90 percent of museums the host road donates the labor to help move em

That's a heck of a comment when Beech Grove is, per the video, as empty as it's been in recent memory.

It hit a snowplow truck.
Horizons and P42 will start new corridor services in many cases until the 2030s when amtrak can get Airos or maybe DMUs
