There were some good MSU teams in between Magic and Cleeves. The 1986 Skiles led team was absolutely robbed of a final-4 by a complete homer clock operator against Kansas in Kansas city. Also the 1990 Team led by Steve Smith was robbed by a late georgia tech OT buzzer beater that never should have counted. Don't sleep on the1995 Fire (Shawn Respert) and Ice (Eric Snow) team either. Respert is still the all time leading scorer at MSU and was National player of the year in 1995. Respert's NBA career was cut short by cancer but Snow had a damn solid 13 years career in the NBA.
I heard Mateen give a speech at MSU basketball camp 10 years ago that was AMAZING! He is truly a spartan legend

Very touching episode! On the lighter side. You have two kids coming to Michigan State not this year but next year. Man...I saw them go head to head. I had floor seats under the basket. One is a left handed Robert Williams lll. The other one is like a 6'5" point guard version of Tyler Herro out of Dallas. He is like Richie Cunningham if you meet him. If you don't know about him you won't see him coming. You think he is easy work and he will yam it right on your head!! Nasty! 3 balls, handles, passing, hope and very humble and grounded. See who bets you then!
Cleaves a good dude, when he played for the Kings Everytime he saw me it was love. He barely knew me and Alex Thomas he went on a road trip to Utah and threw us the keys to his whip. Much success to you brotha and glad you are a living testimony

Draymond is a walking example of how good of a coach,izzo is. Nobody, no bod y, thought dray would make the NBA. If you said yes,you know your telling a damn lie. Izzo got him,elevated him and now look at dray. Possibly one of the best two way forwards of all time. That's how great izzo is as a coach.

If Mateen hadn't been in that car wreck with those UM players where he broke his back then a lot of things wouldn't have happened 1) that was the first indication of the scandal that would hit michigan. People began asking how robert traylor was driving a brand new SUV? That led to unraveling the whole Martin scandal. 2) Mateen may have gone to Michigan 3) Matenn was never the same athlete. He was still a great passer and college player but he was an elite athlete and lightening fast before that injury. That kept him form being an NBA player. He was an all time great college player but he needed that athleticism to be a pro. Regardless he will go down as one of the all time greatest college ballers.

I would have killed to have a coach like Izzo!!! Izzo, the master of peaking at the right time! Cleaves was THE poster man for believing anything is possible. His joy when he won the title and the love for his mates made the whole country want "THAT". You talk about MSU eras, what about the twins? was it the Thomas twins from 89? They ran the basketball camp when I was there. Congrats on the wedding. Great to have you back
