Farmers in the USA plant a monoculture cash crop directly into a crimp-rolled cover crop and after the harvest they reseed with a multi-seed cover crop (seeds extracted from the most successful). Saw one video where there were at least three layers of previous rolled cover and it was successful. Farmer in question was worried but it worked. If I remember correctly it was a corn crop and the rows between were green and not bare soil. Nature is hungry too I guess.

So to fix the soil degeneration from chemical farming, they plant multi species cover crops to restore the soil which in turn reduces future inputs for cash crops? I wish I was a farmer. It seems so complicated. I think im getting the gist of the problem though. Thank you.

It’s never just one thing eg. MS plants but a combination.
Here Russell is disc seeding so not breaking up the soil and disturbing the microbes, no chemicals or synthetic fertilisers, he’s inoculated the MS seed with a combination of biological inputs, he’s planting into a crimped MS that was allowed to grow to flower.
All of these in combination with each other is helping to build soil.
The only way we can build soil is to keep a diverse range of living roots in the soil. If land is extremely degraded then trucking in compost is another option usually in a pellet or prill size format and these go down the shoot with the seed.
The only way to build soil is with a diverse range of photosynthesising plants. It’s even better if there’s a rotation of grazing livestock particularly cattle but any ruminant followed by poultry or fowl is a premium situation.
Does this help to uncomplicate the holistic system?

@@FarmingRevolution very much thank you. I've just finished watching Christine Jones - Nitrogen, the double edged sword that has helped me understand too. I live in a new subdivision (rural nsw) where the "soil" is just sand and rocks. Anything I plant gets smashed by cabbage moths. It feels impossible to fix it. Trying gardening videos gives an unrealistic idea of how "easy" it is to grow vegetables. How to translate farming practices into a normal suburban garden. "What would a farmer do?" Has become a complicated question lately. How do normal people take this information and translate it into real life? Why isn't farming taught properly at school? I'm almost 50 and I know nothing. So... yes? It cleared up a lot, still so much to learn. I appreciate you. 💖
