    I’m a Dennis fan. I love styx but Dennis was the mastermind behind much of it. I also love Tommy and JY obviously but I have a special respect for Dennis. That said, this song works so well with Gowan’s voice. Well done!

      Agree with everything you said except for Gowan,he's to mellow and can't hit the high notes like DDY still can

      If you love Styx, you like Dennis. This is established over and over. Fact is Laurence sings it as good or better, and has the exact same pitch and inflection as Dennis. Plus LG has been in the band 25 years now without leaving. And he is a way better pianist and keyboardist than Dennis ever was or will be.

    To keep the record straight, the tour was not originally called the "Pieces of Eight" tour. For some reason it was called The Main Event Tour. I guess someone figured that "The Main Event" was going to be the big hit off the album, which it wasn't. The tour program featured a boxer on the front., and I have a couple of them somewhere.
    Now, a great story. (Well, at least I think so.) We were in rehearsals in Hammond In. , and I was the new guy on the crew. Now you have to keep in mind that Styx was, and probably always will be my favorite band of all time. It was my first day, and to my knowledge the band hadn't been in yet, and had, to my understanding, not even seen each other since they had recorded Pieces of Eight 6 months before. No when you record something with strong harmonies, there are 3 ways to do it. All at the same time in separate rooms, all in the same room at the same time, or laying down individual tracks when you can get some in the studio
    I had listened to Pieces of Eight extensively before I got the call, so needless to say, I was stoked when it came. I had turned down jobs with The Police, and Supertramp waiting for this call, and if it hadn't happened, I would have been devastated. Anyway, back to the story. The guys came rolling in one or two at a time in the morning. We ended up waiting for Tommy to arrive when all of a sudden we hear tires screeching and a jeep door slamming. In walks Tommy with a shit eating grin on his face saying something about the Indiana State Patrol, and laughing. I never did get the whole story.
    ANYWAY......when time came for the band to do their mic check, and they had each tested theirs individually, they needed to sing something together. I'll be damned if someone didn't count it off, and they did the chorus to Pieces of Eight DEAD NUT ON like they had been playing it for days. From that moment on, these guys walked on water as far as I was concerned
    I ended up not staying with them very long for personal reasons, but for a young rock and roll roadie out of Seattle, I was in heaven at least for a little while.

    • @markharrison5321
      @markharrison5321 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is a great story. I read the Eagles used to warm up their harmony singing Seven Bridges Road in the dressing room, and regularly sang it as part of their mic checks. The response from their road crew eventually led them to actually perform it live in front of an audience, record it on a live album, and release it as a single.

    Lyrically, this is a song with an extremely powerful message that transcends generations. Musically, it stands out as a rock masterpiece that nobody talks about. "Pieces of Eight" - both the track and its titular album - is a textbook example of what made Styx so much more special than most casual listeners may think.

      I love all of the members of Styx. But I literally struggled to take my eyes off of Gowan, because he was *incredibly* entertaining to watch at all times. Haha, I made a promise to myself this April to try and not focus so heavily on Gowan this time! Because I love watching the others play and be in their element, too!
      ((I'm totally looking forward to some of the heart-warming JY + Tommy BFF interactions)).
      Am I the only person whose heart utterly melts in complete awe over seeing those two shoulder-to-shoulder, dancing, goofing off or exchanging significant glances or making one another laugh whilst performing? Cause, I about die from cuteness overload every time. #Friendshipgoals. I'd love to find a JY to my Tommy. Everyone needs a friendship like that.

    My organ donor saved eight lives on December 7th, 2011 after she had been murdered on December 6th, 2011. I wonder of those eight individuals she save how many of us are still alive? She was declared legally dead, but in each of us still alive a piece of her is alive, in my body her left kidney survives and her family wanted to make meaning out of her tragic loss and she was only 19 when her life was taken from her. I have survived more than ten years with her organ in my body, she has filtered more than 330 tons of my poisoned blood... with her left kidney and she is the best friend of my life. All I am for her is a living tomb, epitaph and Emery stone. Pieces of Eight... I have a real silver piece of eight not cut into eight pieces... each piece if cut would be worth 20 dollars U.S. I am related to Admiral Sir Henry John Morgan on my mother's side of the family... my organ donor's first name was Morgan and that is so bizarre... thanks STYX for this song... I wish all of you the best... song reminds me of the price paid for my life in eight pieces and it was not silver... it was paid for in tons of blood... all red... all my love and prayers for the family of my donor, her father's only daughter and she was a ballet,lyrical and jazz dancer from age three to age nineteen... this is her in the first video I saw of her and I lost it when I first saw this video in 2014 after I signed legal documents to have contact with her father... an amazing lady... cut to pieces after she was murdered to save lives... she was killed by a drunk doctor in a car wreck and it caused a blood clot to her brain... she was number 7 in the competition and saved my life on December 7th, 2011... all of those things are so bizarre to me... se7en is the number of completion in ancient writing... all of the events have been strange to me for the past ten years... thanks STYX for this one song... my donor and the first video of her I ever saw of her... th-cam.com/video/r6GIOo6gBGM/w-d-xo.html

    I've loved Styx since I was 16.... and growing up in Toronto was very familiar with Gowan who I love as well. When he joined Styx in 1999 I was overjoyed. Saw them in 1999 at Lulu's in Kitchener as one of my birthday presents that year. Always a good show. I far prefer Gowan with them as DDY was too controlling - everything had to be his way. They opened for Def Leppard, and as much as I love Def Leppard, Styx was by far the better show, even as an opener. I hope to catch Dennis in concert sometime soon also. What a shame the band decides to play Pieces of Eight AFTER they fire the man who wrote it..but refused to play it while Dennis was in the band. That said-Larry Gowan does a fine job-he has a great voice as well.

    I like this version better than the one on the original album. I do get what some of the Gowan haters say about his voice not being great for some of Dennis DeYoung's songs, but on this one it is equally good or even better. I am really happy that the current lineup resurrected this song as part of the Grand Illusion/Pieces of Eight tour. I think it is one of the more meaningful songs they ever did.

    Dennis de young was great for the band but became to controlling so they told him to hit the road.
    The band seems to enjoy the music again and their new Album is incredible!
    I have had the pleasure of seeing Styx with and without Dennis and Styx is a better band without Dennis.
    I have watched Dennis and his new band The Music of Styx and without his old bandmates it just isn't the same music.
    The New Styx have found a voice in Lawrence Gowan to keep the old Styx music alive while creating new powerful music.
    How is this bad?

    • @diceytrust2768
      @diceytrust2768 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Chris Jakubowicz - The Dennis crowd just can't accept that DDY was replaceable after all. To them, he is the end all, be all of Styx. And if he's not there, the band should have just quit. They really are that nasty. And they think we, who support Lawrence Gowan, are selfish. I've watched Dennis's band on TH-cam here, to me they are just terrible. The person Dennis hired over sings the vocals on TS's tracks. And Dennis's voice is deteriorating. I listen with headphones on, and I can really hear how his voice sounds very old. Which I realize was bound to happen, for he is 70. To me, Dennis should just retire. He only does around 30-45 shows a year. I also noticed he doesn't play keyboards a lot during his concerts, which is strange since he's a keyboard player.

    • @cjak1966
      @cjak1966 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree Deborah. Dennis was a great performer but his time is past. Dennis De Young and the music of Styx band is a joke. Poor musicians and a need by Dennis to have them look like his old Styx mates. Dennis' new band mates look so out of place, its funny to watch them on You Tube all acting like Dennis wants them too.
      I don't dislike Dennis but he obviously had a control problem and that is the sole reason he isn't still with the band.

    • @diceytrust2768
      @diceytrust2768 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris Jakubowicz ~ Yes, Dennis's time is past. He should just be proud of what he's accomplished, and move on. And yes, he was a great performer. My main problem was when he tried to sue Styx. That was so wrong.
      In any company, once an employee can't, or won't do what is required for the job, the company gets rid of them in some form or another. This situation was no different. Dennis cannot do the rigorous touring that the band does, so they replaced him with someone who can & WILL. It's really that simple. When that whole thing started, Dennis literally wanted them to wait for him to get better, before they toured for the
      "Brave New World" CD. Well here it is, over 18 years later, and Dennis's is still ill...supposedly. And still can NOT tour regularly. I've said it several times before on these posts, and I'll say it again...
      If Styx had allowed DDY to stay, they would've been finished...period. Maybe that makes the Dennis crowd happy, but to me, the guys were still in their prime, and much too young to just pack it up, back in '99. And I also agree, their latest album,
      "The Mission", is excellent. It's nice to talk to someone who has some reasoning. Thanks for listening... ✌🎶😉

      It's not bad. Every band member still is amazing. Tommy still has a bit of his 80s voice, Larry kinda sounds like DDY and can jam it out perfectly on keyboard, JY is getting up there in age but still can't stop rockin, Todd is a beast at drums, Ricky can't be any better, and Chuck is the same.

    If they don't want Dennis in the band, they shouldn't rely on his material to draw a crowd. They could still get a pretty decent set together, though it would become obvious who wrote the hits and who made them a name people even remember.

    • @bielmichelson4758
      @bielmichelson4758 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's DDY who writes the lyrics but... the rest of the band are the ones that made the music, if you know exactly what i mean?

    • @artrock101
      @artrock101 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know what you mean, but that's not necessarily the case. If the credit says DDY, then he wrote the music and the lyrics. He may not have told John how to play the drums, or told the guitarist what to play during the solo, but when it comes to songwriting, the writing credit goes for both the lyric and the music (chords, melody, structure, etc). I agree that a whole band contributes to the over-all sound, and the appeal thereof, but there's no denying the particular skill of songwriting, and why it's revered and protected the way it is. Most musicians can riff competently and jam, but few have the real gift of coming up with ideas that transcend and connect with lots of people. It's not as if DDY just had the lyrics for Come Sail Away and the rest of the band filled in the music..
      In my opinion, the chemistry of Dennis and Tommy's songs and voices, in combination with Dennis' keyboards and Tommy's solos, are what made them a huge success in the late 70s/early 80s. Sure, Tommy was a big contributor (moreso than JY), and wrote a handful of their hits, but I would also bet that when most people think of Styx, they think of one of Dennis' songs. To me, his songs are the core of what I would call the Styx sound. And that's why his songs are the focal point of their set, with or without him.

    • @bielmichelson4758
      @bielmichelson4758 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      artrock101 All I could say is, no one can undermine the song writing skills of Tommy that undeniably made them more famous. DDY is talented but if you come across all DDY's past and present interviews when he was still with the band and everything 'Behind the Music' and if why John C. left. Him, evidently grasping to take control. You form a band, there were changes, there were replacements, but you're a band. It's about unity and working together.

      I totally agree. Not saying DDY is blameless in their demise or that he can do no wrong, nor am I underplaying TS's importance in their success. And I also wouldn't want to see them all playing together if they can't get along. Just being ideological on youtube, I guess.

    Lawrence Gowan is an excellent musician. He to me, is better then Dennis in terms of showmanship, and musicianship. He obviously loves what he's doing. Dennis hated touring, and still rarely does so. Styx on the other hand, has toured every year since 1999. I would never had gotten to see them more otherwise. And listen to how incredible they sound here, only from 6 years ago.

      You dont know shit about music dear, I am a musician and you want to know what? Composing os the hardest stuff, and to come out with great songs years after years is something that not a lot of composers can do, Dennis DeYoung did it, to tell he his not a good interpreter or showman you got to be one hell of a troll, or you know nothing about music which I think you dont....the new singer is great but nowhere is he in the level of musicianship as Dennis, now get on with your life and try to think before you write something wrong, and stupid

      Saying Lawrence Gowan is better than Dennis DeYoung in Styx is like saying Queen's touring keyboardist is better than Freddie Mercury. Been a musician for 24 years, it's no contest. Dennis's voice is still excellent and he's been ready for an epic reunion tour for the last 25 years....Any hired gun that comes into Styx is just setting foot in the cathedral of music that DeYoung, J.Y., Tommy Shaw, and the Panozzo brothers built!
