I can't think about Jon Batiste without thinking of that moment on the Late show with Colbert when Tom Segura was the guest. Tom was telling a story about how he almost became a subway spokesman beside the then famous Jarod. Tom goes on to say that the producers name his character Jerome. Tom said "I might be going out on a limb here but isn't Jerome a black guy's name?" To which when Jon Batiste was asked said "that could be any bodies name, I'm an expert." giving a forced looking smile turned sour. Totally ruining the joke and overall vibe. Tom visibly rolls his eyes. Tom goes on to say "at the time, I didn't know Jon Batiste so I thought it was". I told the producers and were like really? So weeks go by and Tom gets to the first day of shooting. The producer says we thought about what you said and we agree. So your new name is Jermaine. When Tom said that he looks at Jon. Jon gets up out of his chair in agreement that Jermaine is a black guy's name and starts doing Michael Jackson dance moves. I don't really think there is a moral to this story. Just a memory I have of that interaction. Also, I think after the initial "I'm an expert" the producers probably told him to just agree and play along with the comedians joke rather than try ruin his career on TV.
