    @6:30 *_Totaly Agree_* 4880 is a form factor, not a chemistry formulation. It can be used for LFE as well as any other cell formulation.

    • @GregHassler
      @GregHassler 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It can be except that Tesla explicitly said they won't use 4680 for LFP. The properties of the different chemistries must be a good match for the properties of the mechanical design, and apparently Tesla doesn't think it's a good fit.

    If LFP goes up in price then SIBs become attractive and will supplement. MNC already looks like a niche product.

    So what happened to the idea that Tesla making its own 4680 batteries was going to be the solution to all Tesla's battery supply constraints? This fantastic new form factor and dry electrode technology were supposed to lower costs and increase efficiency. Only one problem: Tesla (and Panasonic) are still struggling to make them fast enough to match the proposed rate of production of the cars themselves. This is a new manufacturing process, and I read one Teslarati article where it stated that even Panasonic, who are battery manufacturing veterans compared to Tesla, won't be able to start mass production until March 2024. It's make or break time for Tesla. If they can't make the 4680's at commercial production rates, they will have to either abandon 4680's altogether, or reserve them only for limited production models like maybe the Roadster and Model S Plaid. It will be interesting to see how the next couple of years pan out.

    Panasonic is an older company that cares about quality control which is very different from Tesla. They're not going to take shortcuts just to please Tesla- that type of thing ends up costing too much money

    There must be huge interest from Elon in the quest for lithium production in the Salton Sea (California) area. I know he attempted to buy a company there a few years ago, but that deal didn't work out. There are vast quantities of lithium and other elements available in hydrothermal wells in that area. More lithium can be found in southern Oregon and northern Nevada. If I could ask Elon a question, I'd surely ask about what he is doing in those places.

    It would not surpise me if Tesla had it's own plans for LFP batteries as well as 4680 and 2170 stopgap production. It is a no brainer that they will contract for any of these battery types with every battery supplier. No to mention contracting with the mining suppliers for primarily for making 4680 batteries. I see no sense of this being the case for Legacy Auto companies, attempting the pivot to BEV vehicles. Furthermore the iterative culture that is endemic in Tesla (and SpaceX), is anathama to the management and culture of legacy auto companies. That iterative cutlure drives the speed of Vehicle inprovments and FSD Beta improvements, as well as battery development improvements. Legacy auto don't get this, which leads to unatainable statements such as we will have a production of 2 million EV's by 2025. Legacy Auto needs Engineer CEO's and managment to set realistic goals.

    I think they found a way to easily produce a 4680 lfp, or some other cheap chemistry thats over 1000 W per kg. Why would these battery companies give up floor space for the 4680 rather than their own technologies, unless it was that good.

  • @WSDFirm
    @WSDFirm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Agree with the Tesla push for LiFP chemistry. I envision in many forms factors including blade and LiFP 4680 batteries 🔋
    Elon said he wants to perfect 4680 battery production, then add other chemistries, including LiFP.

  • @b9eda9ad
    @b9eda9ad 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I believe the cheap Tesla could even have Sodium-Ion batteries. Production could ramp up in 2024 and anyway do not expect the cheap Tesla before then.

    While Tesla can't keep up with demand for their current models I don't see any point in wasting resources with a mew model with lower potential profit margin.

    May not be vaporware but unless you work for Tesla you still can't get a car with 4680's . Like most things they are a year or two
    behind what they predicted on Battery Day . It looks like LFP is catching up fast though. I would think the Tesla is handing the 4680
    process over to people that can produce it fast.

    Panasonic has screwed the pooch. They could be Tesla's largest supplier globally. If and when their Japanese customers start making EV's they could be their supplier in a big way. This is a text book example of bad management.

    • @chrisfox9263
      @chrisfox9263 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, just imagine being a battery maker in the EV age in Japan, where there are only 2 Japanese made EV models sold. In 2021 . . . 176,000 EV's were sold in Norway, population 5 million to 20,000 EV's in Japan, population 125 million. So on a per capita comparison Norway buys 220 EV's for every 1 sold in Japan!!!

    Tesla has already done the heavy lifting.... what's the problem with Panasonic? Tesla is _"...writing checks it can't cash...."_ .... not enough 4680s for it's current product line. Massively cell constrained.
