    I absolutely ❤ the vibes of Saloniki. It's a very youthful and always happening city. The gorgeous architecture, amazing cuisine, the Byzantine churches everywhere with the Walls of Saloniki and the sea promenade add to the elegance and charm of this city. I work remotely from there every couple of weeks and I just love it. I also lived there for a month. It takes time to discover the gems of this city.

    It is really a wonderful town. It has been the hub of many many cultures throughout history and somehow, its vibe, even nowadays, gives that off. It is also much smaller and more "manageable" than Athens. Food is great, people are true and friendly and far more relaxed. With Thessaloniki as a base you can visit many many points of interest in Northern Greece. Pella and Aegai, the heart of the Ancient Macedonian Kingdom is just an hour's drive away. Chalkidiki with the great beaches and nature also very close. The vast vine and peach plains of Central Macedonia with the beautiful towns of Veroia, Naoussa and Edessa also offer something different. It really makes for more than a city break.

      The best? Don't think so. Kalamata's is one of the most impressive and definetely the longest one. Athens not being a city by the sea can't have one but the southern suburbs form the biggest one in the whole country.

    Also fantastic bougatsa is produced in Crete also with cream but mostly with sour mijithra cheese that is super tasty. The combo of sour cheese with sweet cream or sugar powder topped with sinnamon is out of this world.

    If this fire didn't burn down the half of the city and the buildings remained as they were Thessaloniki it would be top tier city. "Modern" buildings of post war era made Thessaloniki a small version of Athens. Also worth to mention Thessaloniki was the 2nd most important city of Byzantine empire/Eastern Roman empire after Constantinople which was the capital. Kemal Atatürk the leader of modern Turkish state was originated from Thessaloniki. Moreover till the early of 20th century Athens was a village compared to Thessaloniki in every aspect. Great city, Great food but micro crime and pollution have increased the last decade. In 90s was the most romantic city in country. Hope after they finish with some major projects, Thessaloniki reclaim the prestige which deserves.

    I just found you and I'm happy I did. Seriously considering retiring to Greece. Tough to know where to live though. Considering Athens because more English is spent there. But looking for a somewhere affordable and a bit quiet. And I suggestions would be super helpful. Of course I had to subscribe to your channel because you have awesome videos. Keep up the great work!

    • @agirlandherpassport
      @agirlandherpassport  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for subscribing! Athens is definitely not quiet. But easy to navigate without much Greek. Although, you should learn some to make your life easier. Maybe live in a suburb such as Glyfada or Marousi. I can't say for sure as I haven't spent much time there. You could also consider a city in the Peloponnese but where you choose, spend the winter there before moving permanently. Winters in Greece are very different than visiting.

    Looks to be a fabulous city so much more attractive than Athens. It will go on my to do list. I hate being a party pooper but I did not like the shots of the hotel corridors with fire extinguishers holding open doors (which may have been proper fire doors although I could not see any notices to that effect). Potentially very dangerous especially when the suites have cooking facilities within them which increases the fire risk factor. Hope you feel better soon and Happy New Year.

    • @agirlandherpassport
      @agirlandherpassport  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They aren’t fire doors. They can be closed to create a larger suite. Considering this is one of the few smaller hotels in Greece, I have seen a fire extinguisher in available to the public, I was glad to see them. They even had smoke detectors which you don’t see a lot of in Greece.

    Hi there! I love your channel, it's so informative. In the first week of March 2024, I am going for 9 days to Greece with my parents in their sixties. We are flying in to Athens and understand islands like Naxos and Paros are off-season destinations. Can you recommend other places that are good to go? Do you recommend Santorini as well?
    Thanks in advance!

    • @agirlandherpassport
      @agirlandherpassport  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Naxos is a good off season place as it has a good year round population. Paros might be okay but only in the main town. Syros is also a good option. I wouldn’t go to Santorini then. It will be very quiet.
