    Hi Brittany! I'm a senior in High school but I'm taking college courses right now. Do you think dentist students need to be the students that find biology and chemistry easy in high school? I'm not the smartest student and I think i'm pretty average, but I'm really interested in dentistry. Also, I was told I should major in microbiology if I want to go into a dentistry program. What did you major in before getting into your program?

    • @brittanywatu4835
      @brittanywatu4835  7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      +ElaineHuynh hi Elaine, I don't think you necessarily have to find science classes easy. I'm a strong believer of working hard in everything you do because it will pay off! Sometimes the "smarter" students will take it for granted and will not do better in the long run. You can major in anything you'd like, just as long as you complete the prerequisites. Choose whatever interests you! My major was biological sciences but I have classmates in dental school who were psychology, business, and even performance music majors!

  • @Mynguyen.24
    @Mynguyen.24 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love all of your recommend and you are really focusing on what you do. Not much people taking specific about this. In addition, I think you missed the math class in prerequisite, most of the school require statistics course. I had took one calculus 1 classes and get disappointed that they did not require it, so I need to get statistics class soon...

I've chosen predentistry or general biology as a major/program for college but I was still unsure. Thank you for offering some clarity on the subject. Also, it'd be cool if you could make a video about what it was like to apply for undergraduate school. Senior year is going to be hectic.

    Hi Brittany! I’m currently a sophomore in high school and I too want to pursue a career in dentistry. I’ve done some research and some websites say that it is highly recommended to take a pre-dental program before going into dental school. However, I’m confused because I always thought that you would just need to major in a science-related field, take other prerequisite courses, take the DAT, and after that you can apply to dental school. I’m just wondering if you know anything about the pre-dental program thing.

  • @giivianna8981

    I went to a dental impressions day st a dental school, and I didn't like it it but I'm ok with becoming hygienest? Dies tht make any sense??? Also can one go to dental school if they're not good at chemistry?

    • @brittanywatu4835
      @brittanywatu4835  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes that makes sense! Dentist and dental hygienist is similar but different too! It's ok if you want to be a hygienist rather than a dentist.
      In dental school, there aren't any chemistry classes but it is definitely one of the foundation sciences that you need to take before going to dental school. Also, what do you mean by not good? Because if you are decent at it, you should be fine!

    • @flowerpower341
      @flowerpower341 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not good, as in it was difficult for me to understand in high school. I am not good with that subject. But we just had a mini chemistry unit in bio, and I actually understood stuff about bonds, hydrogen ions, isotopes, etc. I'm just scared about stoichiometry, mols, etc :(

    Hi Brittany! Do you think that I should just go for my bachelors instead of trying to get an AA and prerequisites at my community college? I have researched a bunch and lots of schools either say that they have a limit for the number of prerequisites one can take at a CC or they strongly recommend them at at 4year.
    I just know that I would save a lot of money at a community college. If anyone in the comments can help too that would be grand. Thank you!!!

      To get my Bachelors degree in Biological Sciences, I had to have two semesters of any type of math. I took AP Calculus AB in high school so I had credit for that. I only needed 1 more semester worth of math so I just took Statistics. Math was never my strong suit so I avoided taking any more than I have to!

  • @jacohan4028

    Do volunteering in hospital or community clinic matters more for admission? Or is just shadowing dentists for EC more important? I'm actually want to go Dental school to specialize in OMFS. I'm very interested in field of oral surgery and pathology. Do I have to get into top-tier school to get spots for specializing?? How does it work?

    • @brittanywatu4835
      @brittanywatu4835  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think anything related to dentistry is probably more important. For specializing, I don't think it matters which dental school you go to, whether it's "top tier" or not. What matters most is probably your ranking within your own class and making connections, getting involved with the dental specialty you are interested in.

I'm in the 11th grade and I guess you can say I finally jumped on the excited for college train and want to consider being a dentist and I have a few question. So say if I major in biological sciences for my undergraduate years, when I finish with those four years would I have to take the DAT in the college I'm in or would I have to go else where? Like would the school I'm in offer that test so I could continue my studies there? I'm still confused on how the whole process works. I'm sorry if this doesn't make any sense

    • @brittanywatu4835
      @brittanywatu4835  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn't matter in high school or undergrad. What matters is
      getting top grades and ranking in dental school as well as making a lot of connections too.

      +Kaye Bitancur I have a B.S. In Biological Sciences. Any major is fine as long as you complete the requisites but I personally recommend one that is related to Biology.

    I made the huge mistake to not "apply" for dentistry (i am from the Netherlands and we go straight to uni when we're finished with A levels) we had to sign up before January 15th :'( now I am thinking about doing another major first before applying to dental school next year. What is the best option? I am thinking about doing Pharmacy.. (I can go straight to pharmacy school with my diploma) about 80% of the students there would've rather pursued dental school /medical school so the subjects the uni provides are for example cell biology .. Genetics and such.. What do you think? I am so sad I can't start with dental school this coming year :'(

    • @xjustalice
      @xjustalice 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      * these subjects they focus on in the first year, since so many students quit after that to go study dentistry /medical school .. But are these subjects a waste of time? I feel like dentistry is more about the mouth area and not necessarily about genetics and such right?

    Hey, I'm majoring in biology too and was wondering do i need any Calculus?

    • @brittanywatu4835

      It depends on your college/university. Mine did not require calculus, only two semesters of any math.

      +Arlety Mendez I took Genetics because it was a required course to get my degree and I took Microbiology as a biology elective. I would say that they are great classes to take but definitely try to make the classes I mentioned in the video as the priorities.

      If they don't offer it in high school, don't worry. I don't know in Canada how it works but in the US, sometimes you can take community college classes while still enrolled in high school!
