    Thank you for the video, APA is the least intuitive thing ever. MLA all the way!

      MLA's great if you are doing textual analysis of paper books or aren't citing anything at all. Otherwise, it's kind of a mess.

    Table is no longer in the top row, and though I found it before, it seems impossible to find table properties now...f*ck, this part always makes the process take 3 times as long
    Edit: Ah, though it always pops up, it becomes clear (unclickable) when your clicker is over a table. Well...that's inane, ffs. Under Formatting

    The running head and page number should also be consistent in font type and size used in the paper

    • @colinmurphyed.d.3583
      @colinmurphyed.d.3583  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Try enlarging the table cell containing the page number. Also check that the table width does not extend into the right margin. If the page number is within the printable portion of the header, and the table cell is large enough (when saved in Word format), the number should appear. Remember that when converted to .docx format, the document format may (will) change. Be sure that you're viewing it using actual Word, and preferably a recent version.

    Dud, how do you change the page number going from the second page to the third?

    • @colinmurphyed.d.3583
      @colinmurphyed.d.3583  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you have used the "insert" "page number" "at current location" "in plain text", it will automatically update with the correct page number. If you are using a different version of Word (e.g. free online) the concept is the same. Use the Help search box and ask "insert page number" for instructions.
      If you are manually entering the page number, it will always be what you entered on page 2. If you change the page three header to "3" it changes page two. Use the automatic numbering of "insert page number" to number pages correctly.
      I hope this helps.

    I can still see the running header: title of paper and page number
    right above the title page after i insert the page break, is that supposed to happen?

    • @colinmurphyed.d.3583
      @colinmurphyed.d.3583  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Headers are continuous and appear on every page throughout the document unless using the "different first page" option, so this in normal. Using that option, the first page header can be different. Usually, when you select the "different first page" option, whatever is currently in the 1st page header moves to the 2nd page. You can then add the 1st page header "Running head: " TITLE IN CAPS & page number on right margin. Just remember that only the 1st page header includes "Running head: " ... I hope this helps. Colin

    So what is your institution?

  • @Threepecs
    @Threepecs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am totally unable to bring the text cursor to the center of my page. How did you do that?

    • @colinmurphyed.d.3583
      @colinmurphyed.d.3583  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use the paragraph alignment setting of "center", and ensure that the paragraph "indent" option for that line is "none" (a paragraph setting of "first line indent" will offset the cursor to the right by the amount of the indent, usually 0.5")... If creating the title page, the text (title, your name, your institution) are centered in the upper half of the page. I hope that helps.

  • @adiksadiatabs
    @adiksadiatabs 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    How far should I move down the page to type the title?

    • @colinmurphyed.d.3583
      @colinmurphyed.d.3583  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The block of title text (title, name, institution) is to be centered in the upper half of the page. So in essence, your name is centered in the upper half of the page, with the title above and institution below it. Rather than tell you how many lines to add, I'll suggest that you "zoom out" to view the entire page, then place the text so that it appears to be centered in the upper half.
      As a side note, be sure that the paragraph indent setting is "none". If it is set for "first line indent", the text will be shifted to the right by the size of the indent (usually 0.5")... This is a common error. Using "first line indent" for paragraphs if fine, but anything centered will be offset to the right.

    Can I set this up on my android phone? 📱

    • @colinmurphyed.d.3583
      @colinmurphyed.d.3583  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best answer is "it depends..." Most of the APA basics that the video describes can potentially be done on the Android phone. The better question is how well you can write a scholarly paper on a smartphone. If you can create the body of your document, then create the title page and references, it is possible to format them as needed. One challenge is the small screen size, which makes it difficult to see the full page, so I wish you the best of luck!

    • @colinmurphyed.d.3583

      All of the pages after the title page, including the References pages, have the title and page number in the header. Only the title page has the words "running head:" in the header.
      Only the beginning of your content page, page number two in this example, also has the title in the text portion of the page as well as the header. Watch the video again to see it.
      The References page has the word ""References" "centered at the top of the page just as the title on your first content page.
      I hope this helps.

    Why do we have to say running head on the title page when it's obviously the running head? That's redundant and unnecessary. We don't put page number before 1 and skip it after...
