Hi from England, Tipper. Here we have something called custard tarts. It's a milk and egg mixture as you made for your baked egg custard, but used to fill little pastry shells (muffin tin sized), sprinkled with nutmeg and baked in the oven. They're delicious and a great - if old fashioned - favourite here in the UK.
I'm from the U.K. also.....72 years old and remember baking custard tarts with my grandma when I was little. It was always my favourite thing to choose when going into a bakery. I loved the nutmeg on top.
My heritage is mainly from England, Wales and Ireland. My mom made custard cups all of the time with nutmeg sprinkled on top. I also make them quite frequently. It’s so interesting to me how many things we make that are basically carryovers from the old country. I.e. fruitcake, plum pudding, mincemeat pie, gooseberry pie, etc.
You're bringing back sweet memories! My dear mom used to make that custard! She went to heaven 12 years ago. If she was still on this earth she would be 104 years old. Every now and then I think of that custard, now after watching you, Im going to make it soon! Thank you for putting together another lovely video!
Was supposed to have foot surgery today but arthritis is so bad I can hardly walk even with a walker. Your videos bring so much calm in my life that it eases my mind.
I remember watching our mother remove hot cups of custard from the oven. She always sprinkled nutmeg on top to make it look pretty. Comfort food for a cold winter day.
I remember getting plastic glasses in the oatmeal. We also got wash clothes in laundry soap. Flour came in cloth sacks and mom sewed thing out of them even clothes.
My grandmother who grew up in a sod house out in western Ks. Use to make this custard especially on holidays. A lot of time she make a custard pie. I really loved it at room temp and cold but not the 2nd day as it weeps on the pie crust and makes it kind of soggy. She also made caramel from browning sugar. I loved listening to her and her sisters talk about living in their sod house growing up..Their ancestors were from Scotland.
I just commented above about making custard pies with my grandma (in the U.K) and I remember they were not good on the 2nd day as the custard got weepy and wet the crust. I think I may have to make this recipe as my mouth is watering now.
Egg custard is my favorite pie. My great aunt used to make custard and serve it is little individual custard cups which I still have. They are very special to me. Good memories. I like mine chilled. Bless your sweet family.
My mother-n-law made egg custard. I hadn’t had it before I married into the family. It was a Christmas staple and was warm and delightful on the night Santa was due. Such a sweet memory. Thank you Tipper. 😊
The rain is pouring outside. I’m sure that dessert would be nice now. I’ll be making it soon. Thank you for teaching us a new recipe Tipper. Blessings to all your dear family. Love from Costa Rica. ❤️🇨🇷🌧️
I love the story of the colorful bowls and that you have those to use in your kitchen to remember your mother and think of your Great Grandfather. That dessert looks really easy to put together. I bet it was tasty. Thank you for the recipe!
I do watch more than a couple channels and I just haven't been in the mood. I am going to be burying my daddy tomorrow, it's been so hard to accept. Not doing well, and the business of getting everything ready and just right has been not great. Tomorrow we will lay his body to rest, and my hope is right now in the arms of Jesus. This is the first video I've watched in about 2 weeks and I chose it because I knew I would get some comfort. My childhood is complicated, but I remember a lot of good cooking and many stories that you do remind me of. Prayers please.
This recipe reminds me of childhood days when my Grandmother made baked egg custard and also rice pudding. Thank you for sharing. Praying and Blessed! 🤗🙏💕🌄🍂
This brings back such fond memories...of my sweet Mom making custard in her little kitchen, for her big crew. Times were tight and this was a real treat. ❤
A quarter cup of sugar for six servings--the kind of dessert we need. Favorite pie is Custard Spice, an American Shaker recipe. Custard recipe basically the same, with cinnamon, nutmeg, clove sifted on top before baking. I like it best at room temp, certainly not refrigerated. Our Harvest Supper is Saturday night--you've planted an idea in me.
This is a staple for us at the holidays in Arkansas. Placed in a pie crust and definitely with nutmeg. We call it egg pie and best served warm. My favorite passed down for generations.
My grandma and momma made egg custard pie. It was at the top of my daddy's list of favorites along with peach cobbler. Momma always made extra filling and baked one just like what you did because it cooked faster and daddy didn't have to wait so long till the pie got done! Good memories. And I just got up and made me some for myself. Thanks so much for triggering that memory❤.
My grandma taught me how to make custard. Nutmeg, if you like it, goes in before baking. You can use this recipe to make bread pudding too. I add about 3 slices of bread, I like to add raisin bread to it. So good.
My Grandparents used to make the same custard recipe when I was growing up. VERY comforting for sure!! For everyday family consumption, Pap and Gram served the custard in "oatmeal bowls" - which I still have!! They are a beautiful shade of brown on the outside and a gorgeous shade of turquoise on the inside. I use those bowls everyday!! Wish these types of bowls came in oatmeal today. For company, the custard was served in beautiful cut glass footed/pedestal stemware that we called "dessert cups". Made a really pretty presentation when the custard was topped with fresh blueberries or strawberries and a dollop of fresh whipped cream and a touch of freshly grated nutmeg! Guess I've made myself hungry - heading out to the kitchen to whip up a batch of this delicious custard!! Thank you for keeping valuable traditions alive - and for bringing back a lot of wonderful memories for me!!
When I was a little girl, there was a brand called Crystal Wedding oatmeal that came with free real glass punch cups or little bowls. The design looked a lot like depeession glass. I guess eventually they changed over to plastic as the glass could have broken inside the boxes. Also, the plastic would have been cheaper as a give away.
Your videos remind me of my youth growing up in Kentucky. It makes my heart feel good. THANK YOU SO MUCH. If you can't tell I'm older, and remembering is a good thing.
My mom used to make egg custards for the family when we'd had a stomach bug run through the family and we were just ready for food again. She always added nutmeg before baking and served it warm but not hot. So nourishing and comforting, easy on the tummy. My grandma had those pretty dishes and I never knew the story of them, thank you for sharing that.
When I grew up we had a dairy for several years, and we always had chickens. So we always had plenty of milk & eggs, so my mama made custard frequently. My dad loved it.
I make baked custard all of the time. I consider it my ultimate comfort food. My mom made them all of the time while I was growing up. She also made custard pie at the holidays. I absolutely adore custard. Sometimes I make chocolate pots de crème for my family members that love chocolate. Yum!
I was at the Ramsey House when you came over.I also got one of the small cookbooks.I was so excited to see you make the custards. One thing I did because I am a little clumsy I put my baking dish on the oven rack and then poured the hot water in the pan. It was a pleasure to meet you and Matt and so wonderful to see you sharing these recipes.
Memories, this is the custard we grew up with like Junket we stirred it in a circular motion and grated fresh Nutmeg onto it my husband loves baked custard.
This sounds a lot like what my mom would make, only she made it as a pie. I've always known this to be called egg custard pie. This was my dad's favorite pie and I love it too. Moms cooking is always the best, sadly my mom has passed away. I still have so many memories of my mom fixing this pie for my dad.
Baked custard is one of my favorite desserts. My mom used to make it. I haven't made it in a long time; you reminded me how simple it is. While you were cooking, every time you asked, "I wonder if I should...?" I was answering you, as if you could hear, as if those custards hadn't been made and eaten a couple of days ago, LOL. 🤪 Good thing I live alone or they'd be wanting to put me away. I prefer it warm but won't turn my nose up at eating it cold. But I would suggest letting it cool down for a few minutes, not only because it's easier to eat, but because it will continue to set up more after it's out of the oven. Baked custard is good when you don't feel well. It especially slips down easily past a sore throat. They used to make custard as food for invalids, because it's an easy-to-eat way to get protein. I guess I need to dust off my custard cups (though they aren't as pretty as yours). I had a thoroughly aggravating day, but now I feel much better. I will sleep better tonight thanks to you. Thank you.
Isn’t it funny how extra gifts (we say lagniappe in Louisiana) used to come with food? There were jelly glasses and even towels in boxes of Breeze that Dolly advertised! Cereal used to have little prizes and Cracker Jacks had small toys and trinkets. Nowadays we just get a huge bill on a paper receipt. It’s so cool you saved those! Love your cooking videos, Tipper! Merci! 🩵⚜️🩵
Very similar to the egg custard pies we make. We use 1 stick of melted butter and 1 can evaporated milk, 3 eggs, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 2/3 c. sugar , 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg. Mix together on low to medium speed about a minute. Pour into unbaked pie shell. Cook @ 450 first 20 min. Then reduce to 350 until middle is set !! Grew up eating them and still make one almost every month. There are never leftovers. Comfort food and super quick and easy. You should try it Tipper! We love y'all! If you make it take Granny some🥰
Very nice video. I can't wait to try this recipe. Your mums are beautiful. I wish I could find a start of a perennial mum. As I've said in a comment before I've enjoyed gardening, both flower and vegetable since an early teenager. I had perennial mums when I was still at home. We moved and I couldn't take them with me. Have a blessed day!
My Grandma from Michigan made a custard with raisins in it. I added chopped nuts on top at my hubby's request. I guess I like all sorts of custard! TY for sharing your recipe. 🤗
Tipper I readily admit to being old now but even as a little girl my three favorite pies are: Lemon Meringue Egg custard Raisin You make my day when I see you eating something I love even to this very day😊Sure enjoy hearing those boys and a western playing in the background. Made it seem like home ❤
I haven't had egg custard in many, many, many years. My granny used to make them. (Egg custard was one of the first table foods my granny would feed to the babies in our family.) After I married and left home the DH didn't like egg custard, so I never made it. Now I'm wanting one. :) Those little bowls look like Homer Laughlin OvenServe. HLC was a supplier of dishware to be included in oatmeal boxes. Those little extras were known as premiums.
I saw a beautiful set of those ramekins in a brass-looking holder years ago at an antique shop. If I'd known the story behind the premiums I'd have bought it.
I used to make custard for my children when they were young (40-45 years ago). I always chilled it first. We all just loved it and look back fondly on the memories.
LOVED the story about your great grandfathers oatmeal bowls that you have. I also have kitchen items from my great grandmother from Maine. Harty ole Yankee she was. lol
My mom used to make homemade custard sometimes. She'd sprinkle some nutmeg or cinnamon on it. Plus you can get a small blowtorch and make like a flambet ( make it fancy) to a certain degree. ❤❤ It is delicious! I prefer mine chilled overnight
My mom made custard often in the winter, especially if any of us were sick. She baked it in a 9x9 glass baking dish and then placed that in a larger pan of water. Sometime she added rice and made rice custard. It’s delicious, nourishing and bland enough and soothing for upset stomachs.
Oh my goodness ❤ I recognize the ramekins! When I was a young girl, we got them in oatmeal. I purchased a wisk like yours too! Thanks for sharing the idea! I love your cookbook 🎉❤
Hi. My husband's quite older aunt from South GA taught me how to make this not long after my husband & I got married, 46 years ago. This is her recipe. It's simple, yummy & even maybe easier than the one you made today. Hope you enjoy! Bake at 325° until jiggle is firm. 3 cups whole milk, 1 cup sugar, 1 tsp vanilla. Beat all these together well with mixer or by hand. Can bake with or without pie crust. Lots less calories without the crust. Sprinkle top with nutmeg before you bake. Cook it just like you did, in water bath, but can bake in pie plates or custard dishes. This is great warm...but just as good cold! God bless you all & keep you; making His face to shine upon you and bring you peace. Glenda Davis
Glenda, you said maybe this is easier than the recipe Tipper used. "Easier" because there's no eggs in the recipe? Just wondering what would make it thicken up.
Tipper, I think the small porcelain custard bowls are called ramekins.. your cooking skills and willingness is wondrous to behold. I love & appreciate all that you do for your family. TY for sharing this historic recipe. God Bless The Cook.

Nothing like a good, old fashioned custard. So comforting and homey!
I love that you brought those flowers in😊
My Mother’s favorite pie was “Egg Custard.” Very popular in the South.

How wonderful that you got to hear about that directly from someone who lived it.
Egg custard is my favorite pie. My great aunt used to make custard and serve it is little individual custard cups which I still have. They are very special to me. Good memories. I like mine chilled. Bless your sweet family.
When you think about it, custard pie is pretty much pumpkin pie without the pumpkin and spices.
Always a sense of peace and kindness
Love custard! We always stuck a knife in the center.. clean=done like a cake! Yum!!
That was so comforting watching you make the desert and enjoying each other’s company.
Been using your Cube Steak cooking method for nearly 2 years. The family thinks I'm an excellent cook because this comes out so tender. Thanks Tipper
Great to hear! Thank you 😊
My mother-n-law made egg custard. I hadn’t had it before I married into the family. It was a Christmas staple and was warm and delightful on the night Santa was due. Such a sweet memory. Thank you Tipper. 😊

It is the season 😊 thank you for visiting!
This is a staple for us at the holidays in Arkansas. Placed in a pie crust and definitely with nutmeg. We call it egg pie and best served warm. My favorite passed down for generations.
Sounds great! I'm wondering if you could use a graham cracker crust in place of the regular pie crust?🤔🤔
@ no because it bakes. The graham cracker crust would burn. But the filling is basically the same recipe Tipper used. It’s yummy.
My grandma and momma made egg custard pie. It was at the top of my daddy's list of favorites along with peach cobbler. Momma always made extra filling and baked one just like what you did because it cooked faster and daddy didn't have to wait so long till the pie got done! Good memories. Egg custard is a comfort for sure. Sometimes sprinkled with toasted coconut on top, sometimes flavored with lemon.
The coconut sounds good 😊
My grandma taught me how to make custard. Nutmeg, if you like it, goes in before baking. You can use this recipe to make bread pudding too. I add about 3 slices of bread, I like to add raisin bread to it. So good.

Love y'all's cooking videos thanks for sharing Tipper and Matt and Corrie
Our pleasure!
My dad's favorite pie was egg custard. Mom always put it in the fridge to get cold before cutting it.
It looks so good, Tipper. Thanks for sharing. I hope everyone enjoyed supper. Be well & take care.
The mums are lovely in that vase.💕
Thank you! 😊
Save me some!!!!
As you read the comments, it seems that the "mums" and " grans" of the world are being honored and remembered.
to keep from sloshing, I usually add the water around it once I've put it on the over rack
Good idea 😊
When I was a little girl, there was a brand called Crystal Wedding oatmeal that came with free real glass punch cups or little bowls. The design looked a lot like depeession glass. I guess eventually they changed over to plastic as the glass could have broken inside the boxes. Also, the plastic would have been cheaper as a give away.
Your videos remind me of my youth growing up in Kentucky. It makes my heart feel good. THANK YOU SO MUCH. If you can't tell I'm older, and remembering is a good thing.
My Dad's favorite dessert was egg custard!! His mother made it for him.
When I was a teenager and beyond I made it for him. Sprinkled with nutmeg♥️
My family had your cube steak crockpot recipe for supper tonight, it’s so good! Thanks Mrs. Tipper.
So glad!
Some of the simlest recipes are the best. Thanks for sharing Tipper God bless
My Mama made that when I was young. I'm 77 so I guess it is old. God bless. Love and prayers.🙏❤🙏
When I grew up we had a dairy for several years, and we always had chickens. So we always had plenty of milk & eggs, so my mama made custard frequently. My dad loved it.
The white mums are perfectly lovely !!!

This was my favorite as a child, I always had them cold from the frig. So yummy with a smidge of nutmeg on top and some whipped cream.
Sprinkle a layer of white sugar on top. Use a small kitchen torch to brown, caramelize the sugar. The crunchy sugar adds lots.
Sounds great!
Love your "connection" stories. 🥰 Your Mums look sooo beautiful in that container!
Thank you! 🤗

My Grandma from Michigan made a custard with raisins in it. I added chopped nuts on top at my hubby's request. I guess I like all sorts of custard! TY for sharing your recipe. 🤗
Sounds great! Thank you 😊
My sweet mother loved the white sweet potatoes her favorite ❤ I miss her so...
I love putting the custard mix into a pie shell for custard pie. Dee-lish!
Yum!
Tipper I readily admit to being old now but even as a little girl my three favorite pies are:
Lemon Meringue
Egg custard
Raisin
You make my day when I see you eating something I love even to this very day😊Sure enjoy hearing those boys and a western playing in the background. Made it seem like home ❤

one of my all time favorites
Looks delicious! I watch The Rifleman everyday! I heard it in the background 💕Thanks for all your wonderful stories, too.
LOVED the story about your great grandfathers oatmeal bowls that you have. I also have kitchen items from my great grandmother from Maine. Harty ole Yankee she was. lol
Cooling sets the custard. We love custard and have it frequently when eggs are plentiful. Yours looks delicious
My mom used to make homemade custard sometimes. She'd sprinkle some nutmeg or cinnamon on it. Plus you can get a small blowtorch and make like a flambet ( make it fancy) to a certain degree. ❤❤ It is delicious! I prefer mine chilled overnight
Enjoyed the kitchen time as always, thanks Tipper . That recipe is definitely worth trying, I bet it tastes great!
My mom made custard often in the winter, especially if any of us were sick. She baked it in a 9x9 glass baking dish and then placed that in a larger pan of water. Sometime she added rice and made rice custard. It’s delicious, nourishing and bland enough and soothing for upset stomachs.
I love your stories
I am loving this post! Love this desert.
Thank you!
Mrs. Tipper, I do believe you've cooked up a Winner! 😋
Hugs 🤗 and God bless 🙏
Thanks for the stories!❤🎉✨

I'll have to try this custard reminds me of buttermilk pie
My mom made baked custard and it’s so good for when you’ve been sick. I love nutmeg on mine. Like Matt said, I could eat it for dinner.
I have never cared much for custards but you sure made it sound good. 😊
I dearly love Custard ❤but I never make Custard 😢
Tipper, I think the small porcelain custard bowls are called ramekins.. your cooking skills and willingness is wondrous to behold. I love & appreciate all that you do for your family. TY for sharing this historic recipe. God Bless The Cook.
