Years ago I tutored a kid in high school using that book. He was failing Spanish. Not only did he pass, but he went on a cruise with his family that summer and met someone from South America. He was able to speak Spanish with is his new friend for the whole trip. He and his dad were so excited to tell me when they came back. Of the three of us, I don't know who was most happy about it.

To summarize, if you want to learn ANYTHING, then you need to immerse yourself in that activity and practice it. Don't worry about how bad you are at the beginning. If you consistently practice and learn 1 thing per day, then at the end of the year, you would have learned 365 things.

They are nice people and I would really like to communicate in their native language. I feel kinda stupid trying but I love the language when I hear it.
I am very southern country and when I play back myself it sounds really funny. I am sure they may find strange sounding. I plan to visit the Mexican store just down the road from me in about a month or so just to ask for a few vegetables. I have to get up the nerve.

@Heaven & Hell Testimonies Thank you for asking! I had gotten a little frustrated there with my progress and just stopped cold turkey, but then I got motivated when it occurred to me that I needed you read aloud in Spanish. That has helped. I think I've had a fear that I couldn't do it and when I was put on the spot to translate for somebody, I would totally freak out and shut down. Then I realized later that I DID understand what had been said. But last Sunday at church, there were two women from Venezuela who came but understood no English. I just shifted gears and I flowed naturally. I didn't even realize what I had done until I got home. I was in shock! 😳 I even introduced them to the app called, "Language Transfer" which teaches English for Spanish speakers. They were so happy. 😃 That was a first and it will not be the last time that I do that. I just need to take the pressure off of myself.

hahaha Ozuna was a big source of knowledge in my Spanish learning journey too. Also this just shows how you have to actually want to learn the language, because that's when you find the ways to fit it in for 15 minutes a day, 30 minutes a day, rather than making the excuse that you can never find time to practice. Just chipping away and making small progress every week by practicing a fundamental skill (speaking, reading, writing, listening) for at least a bit everyday, or not even everyday but most days, will lead to immense progress in 1 year.

I really respect the fact you don't straight up lie and claim you speak the language perfectly despite having a really high level. I find the youtube "polyglot" community to be super toxic and narcissistic. You have people claiming to speak 30+ languages, but in reality they only know how to ask (not answer) a series of casual questions. More people should be transparent like you and show the people out there learning that it's completely normal to spend months, even years to get to the point of having a basic conversation, which in itself is a great achievement. I understand these lies generate clicks and money, but people don't understand the long term negative effects of turning a language learning journey, which should be a beautiful thing and possibility to comprehend a new culture and mindset into a "how fast can I reach a level where other people will be impressed by how good I am?" competition.
Keep it up brother. Languages are the keys that unlock the many doors of new experiences and cultures.

Thanks for the tips! It’s amazing how you’ve set your mind to learning a language despite working so many hours! I’m a stay at home mom so this really gives me hope. My mom is from Colombia but unfortunately I never learned Spanish. In high school I took French so I really need start with the basics. My grandparents just came to the states for a visit and are begging us to visit them in Colombia. I’d love to go but wouldn’t be able to communicate with many relatives. This has really inspired me to finally learn. I just picked up the first book you recommended. I had also started listening to the same audio lessons on Spotify and YT that you mentioned. Thanks for all the extra info! I’ll check out some of those resources.

Great video Mike. Im 68 and have been learning Spanish for a couple of years now. I too have been listening to podcasts and watching TH-cam videos around three hours a day. My listening and understanding Spanish of course has improved. Because of lockdown it’s been hard to speak with native speakers. Your recommendation of italki is something I will look into. I have Madrugal’s book. Excellent. Spanish with Paul is excellent on TH-cam. I also like Why Not Spanish. Butterfly is very good. I will try the short stories. I’m embarrassed that this long comment is not in espanol. Lo siento. Mucho gracias por tus historia. Boredom or motivation has not been a problem. A Roman emperor once said. If God was to speak it would be in Spanish. It is such a beautiful language. I don’t know how you find time for all this. You are a ambitious young man. I admire your drive. I had the benefit of having grandparents that spoke it, so I didn't exactly start from zero. I'm also now in a bilingual relationship, and she also likes language learning so we talk a lot in English and in Spanish and help each other and encourage each other with all of our other language learning goals.
So I kind of had it on easy mode, a clear motivation to continue, a little background in the language already... but if I had to say one thing, people need to work on listening comprehension, and direct and indirect object pronouns. Those two are the key for unlocking unlocking rest of Spanish.

I am amazed and proud at your advancement in the Spanish language. I started learning Spanish back in 1987/88 with an Elementary Spanish textbook and achieved a substantial vocabulary. The only problem today is, right now, at age 57 that is all I have. I mean I can speak a little but I certainly can read and write much better. I kept quitting all the time because, having College English behind me, my brain was stubborn. I had to know the answers to many Spanish grammar questions and, during those times, couldn't find anyone to answer them. I was too grammar focused instead of focusing on listening and speaking first. I had no excuse. Although they did not have Italki back then, there were a lot of Spanish speaking people around me. I thank you for this video. Now, at age 57, I will take what I have learned and your recommendations to start applying it to speaking and listening. This post needs to be an encouragement for everyone reading it. GRAMMAR NEEDS TO COME AFTER YOU LEARN TO LISTEN AND SPEAK FIRST. Then, grammar will start to explain what you have been listening too and what you are speaking. Of course, if they prioritize and learn grammar, read, write, listen and speak everyday as you did, that will work as well. ¡Sigan con el buen trabajo!

I started from zero Spanish in the summer, now I have listened to (actively listened to) every lesson from Kieran Ball on spotify (60+ lessons, each lesson with ~5-30 3 minute parts) primarily during my 25 minute each way commute to work. I am also on lesson 38 in Madrical's book, almost done. Now I'm getting ready to start hiring a tutor to really start speaking!

    • @thebigNT
      @thebigNT 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@utubedude2842 Yes, it is fantastic. Even after 2 months of listening to Kieran Ball (and doing things like Duolingo that I won't count), it was very beneficial to start at page 1 and do every single exercise/translation/conjugation that the book requests. Every sentence in that book is put there carefully. You immediately respect it and want to do everything it asks.
Also, I am having second thoughts about using an online tutor (iTalki) for primary learning purposes. I am looking for another primary resource when I soon finish Madrical's book. Perhaps an A2 level coursebook.

TH-cam recommended this video a couple of times to me after I watched a couple of reviews on the Madrigal’s Magic book. I’m so glad I finally clicked play. I’m in such awe of your dedication and thoughtful approach to learning Spanish!
At the end of your video you wisely recommended finding people who we connect to who have done this journey and you are that! Mom is Mexican and Spanish is her first language. I’m half Latina but don’t really speak Spanish (I could understand it ok as a kid). It’s a point of embarrassment. I really want to get started but have felt overwhelmed.
I appreciate your guidance and recommendations on resources that have worked for you. This is really an inspirational video! Gracias! 🙏🏽

I'm on month four of learning Spanish and this was so helpful! I'm of the same mindset of you in that I should consume from multiple sources that include audio & reading as well as talking. I was struggling to find written content that I could read at my level. I currently have Open Door to Spanish by Margarita Madrigal and I'm enjoying it (It's far too easy for you now.) I'll check out the other books you recommended especially Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish as I have heard Jim from Spanish to Go recommend that, so that's two good recommendations - plus I like her Open Door book. And I'm super excited to see that Short Stories for Beginners book. I was looking for something similar at the library and came home empty handed. I started with an italki teacher from day 1 when I could only say "Hola". Bless his heart!! I kept meeting weekly because I knew it would hold me accountable and keep me from quitting. It worked! I'm passionate to learn the language now. Muchas Gracias!!
