Does the medical system really understand my needs as a fulltime wheelchair user.

    I'm so sorry you were put through all that and I hope you recover swiftly and fully. I'm also sorry you felt so much need to apologize for being angry over things you have every right to be angry about. Ableism is awful and medical ableism is especially awful because disabled people are often sent to doctors to "prove" we're disabled, yet those same offices are not accessible, and staffed with folks who have little understanding of the lived experience of disabled people as well as little respect for us. You have every right to be upset that they discrimiinated against you (and the homeless person they imagined you to be) while triageing. You have every right to be upset about how little they listened to you - the customer, the patient - when you were trying to guide them as to how to meet your access needs.

    What horrible experiences you have had. Bless you!! I will tell you the truth - I'm not real surprised by the way you were treated. I'm an RN - now retired after some broken bones of my own. Very few doctors or nurses are going to understand your situation. You are the expert on your health - at least that's the way I would have felt. Only you know your limitations and how you manage your routine care. Someone needed to listen to your story. Instead of impatience and rudeness, all of these medical care givers should have listened to you and asked many, many questions. Unfortunately, most ER staff just work ER. Very few of them deal with chronic health care issues like paraplegia. You can say the same about staff that work the units in the hospital - unless they have had personal experience with someone that is paraplegic. After being wheelchair bound for about 5 months, the ones that were the most rude to me - physical therapists. Maybe you need to write up your health history and have copies to hand out when needed. There are many health care professionals that feel like they know everything. Things are way different in hospitals now than when I was a young nurse. A nurse can have the best education that is available but you can't make people care.

      Thank you. It's nice to hear from you as a nurse. Even if you are retired you have some really good insight into how it is. I appreciate all your comments. Actually, you have excellent insight haveing seen the situation from both sides. As a medical person and a patient.

      I highly recommend that you bring this video to the attention of the hospital ERs and the orthopedic Dr after he dismisses you. There is no telling how many people that could benefit by enlightening staff to your point of view.

      I thought about doing that but it just feels like it would not make any difference. It is discouraging to always complain to places where things need to change and to not be heard.

      @@out-spokenwheelsonwheels5870I understand what you are saying BUT if it saves one person from waiting over 12 hours in the waiting area in pain, wouldn't it be worth it? You were seriously wronged. I know you are discouraged and frustrated. There is no excuse for these medical personnel's behaviors. You are not being negative. This is a teaching opportunity - do unto others. You are a kind and gentle soul. You have the right to be upset and you certainly had the right to be mad. Healthcare is a nightmare. I do everything in my power not to use the healthcare system.

    I found this because someone on Mastodon posted this as a story about how both disabled people and women are treated in the medical industry but I'm following because I'm 60, disabled, and want to live in my van either part or full time in a few years, so I look for disabled women doing that.
    And as an aside, after a fracture I developed a nasty infected ulcer from the boot that replaced my splint and ended up in the hospital on IV antibiotics overnight, twice. And I do have feeling, it just blew up so fast it went from feeling tender to dripping infection in about 8 hours, so the cast was probably your best bet.

    I don't believe that you were at all Angry but it was sheer FRUSTRATION. Everyone deserves to be treated with Respect & no bias because of their situation. They should have listened to you as you know your own body and appear to be a very Intelligent lady. Fingers crossed you have better experiences in the future. Take care & know that we wish you all the best.

    Hi Joan my name is Flindell I was watching this video about the “ medical professionals “ notice the air quotes. I have had the same I really mean the same treatment in the ER and from the primary care doctor. It started happening to me I noticed when I turned sixty years old. When I was advocating for myself with the medical personnel they didn’t appreciate that. It seems that they want to takecontrol of my health care choices and options and I just go along with whatever they say without questions.I also am immobile. So I have the same situation when I go to the doctor the problem is they have not been trained to use the lift machine I worked in the medical field when I was younger there used to be orderlies strong men hired for the purpose of lifting patients in the hospital or nursing homes.I resonate exactly with every thing you said. They do in the hospital go around telling each other about the different patients which when I worked was not allowed you could get written up for doing that. I am always diplomatic and kind when talking to medical people because I don’t want get upset because then I loose out. Sorry you are having such experiences in life as we age.

    Good for you for advocating for yourself. I’m sorry that you weren’t treated with more respect in all of the medical facilities you went to. I’m kinda surprised they didn’t put boots on you at the first place instead of the splints.

    Yes i agree that the 2nd doctor was so kkind and you forgot to mention that he was astounded that the emergency had not x rayed both legs when you went in. He also wished he could cast it but the system was not giving him the supplies to do that. I thought he was very kind…

    Hello, fellow paraplegic here, because of polio. I don't understand why the dr. did not put casts above your knees with the knee bent so that the legs don't twist inside. Also why was no surgery done to hold the bones together with pins. I have a relative in her 90s who broke her leg in 7 places and with pins she was able to avoid the cast and started walking a few weeks after surgery. I am pretty sure he bones are quite fragile as ours are.

    • @out-spokenwheelsonwheels5870
      @out-spokenwheelsonwheels5870  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes all good questions but I did not want surgery as the bones had not been displaced. I will wait until I have an exray next week too see if surgery is necassary or not.

    How you were treated is a travesty!!! There was absolutely no excuse as to leaving you without treatment for that length of time. When you get the survey form go into detail as to how you were made to wait. This is totally inappropriate
