The FREEDOM!! Yes... I'm from one of those olde-school very traditional firms. I had to have five men, all at least 20 years older than me initial a piece of paper in order to use my earned time off. During my time at the firm, my previously approved vacation was canceled at the last minute twice. They even made a scene about it that I wanted to work through lunch one day so I could leave an hour early to take my unexpectedly sick dog to the vet. In almost 30 years on my own I have only missed maybe two deadlines and haven't had to ask someone else for permission to handle important parts of my life.

Great insights, Jason. Thank you for your sense of humor. The truth is often funny! The best thing is choosing who you will work with and when. Freedom. The hardest thing about working for someone else is feeling like you are tied to your office, no matter how much experience you have. I also like the ability to create without restraint. You are a good example of this. I've created a blog and a TH-cam channel, and I write books. It's nice to create without concern for what someone else will think. Again, you are a great example.

The Elephant in the Brain is such a good book. It helps make sense of situations and behaviors without personalizing it. Another great recommendation
    Thank you for this video!

How many years of experience would you recommend before starting your own firm? I’ve been looking around and the general consensus seems to be 5-7 years, but would it be possible in 2-5?

Great Q! It's very dependent on how relevant the experience you're getting is to the shop you want to run
For example many folks go into big 4 doing audit but want to open a tax shop
At a minimum you probably want a few years highly relevant experience, but I went deeper on this subject here if it's helpful th-cam.com/video/7UZKPIvQotA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=W3W0VihWOqiuefmu
