very informative i will give it a try , i first saw the cd disc on the tomorrows world programme in 1982 after nearly 40 years you would think they would have come up with a decent tough plastic so it didnt scratch just by breathing on it or touching it .
Before watching this video, I tried a 1000 grit, 2000 grit sandpaper and a scratch remover paste. It did not work out for me, I think i made a mistake by not using a finer 3000 grit sandpaper, I will try again using a 3000 and higher grits plus a 3M scratch remover cream. Nice informative video!

Came here to learn to remove scratches you scratch the crap out of it. Right on! I have so many CDs I want to keep & now I'm gonna scratch them more. I sure hope this really works.
Dude! I know its been 7 months scince you posted this comment but I am going to try this with my NFS CARBON cd. How did it worked for you? Is it readable?
Radial strokes might be best because the redundancy for data correction is written shortly after in the same ring but this technique works as demonstrated.
Years ago, you could buy buffers that looked like CD players, and you could do the exact same steps, but by replacing the microfiber pad on them with the different grit sandpaper. You could bring any cd back to life which still had an intact foil layer.
Do not do this on blurays. Their construction is radically different than CD/DVD. It will damage/remove the incredibly thin hardcoat, the data layer is very near the hardcoat. Unlike CD where the data is near the label side, and DVD where the data is near the middle.
I must have missed something in the video --- thanks for that -- but after I follow the process using the 1000, 2000 and 3000 grit sandpaper then use the polish, the dvd would work at all in the computer
Glad you liked it Jasu! Be sure to look over my extensive video playlists below for many other videos of interest to you, and most importantly take one minute to share a link to my channel with others on social networking sites. Thank you th-cam.com/users/electronicsnmoreplaylists
It worked for me. I saved a $460 cd I got from Discogs. I somehow scratched the hell out of it during a move, which is not a proud moment considering the price tag and rarity of the album. However I’m still left with lots of tiny scratches, and my burner keeps ejecting it. It plays fine in a CD player now though, oddly. I did use Brasso which I had on hand instead of headlight polish like yourself. Would I need to sand longer and possibly harder with the higher grit?
I purchased some 1500 and managed the dull look, then I tried 3000 4000 and 5000 WITH polish and it looks as dull as it did with the 1500, what am I missing here? 😢
I'm no expert, but for wet sanding and polishing aren't you supposed to make a bunch of smaller circles around the surface instead of just one big one? Other than that solid video though.
I see the tooth paste method shown more often. I could try this method but it cost 10$ for the 3M lens cleaning polish plus money for the other supplies. I like what I see here. I may give it a shot over the tooth paste. I did see some other video claim that you should not run in circular motions. I'll find out when I do it.
There does seem to be two schools of thought on the DIRECTION of the sanding/restoring motion on the disc surface. Some are saying that one should only go from EDGE TO EDGE in a straight line, whereas others are specifically calling for going in a CIRCULAR pattern, as demonstrated here, much as one would clean an LP record. I take it has to do with how the laser reads the data imbedded. Which is right, or does it truly matter?
Home Depot I imagine is the easiest place where I can find these sand papers? I shall try it out. Any materials apart from headlight polishing paste that can do the job that you are aware of?
I assume its wet & dry sandpaper? The only snag might be depending how valuable or irreplaceable the disc is, the materials, especially the headlight stuff may be dearer than the disc! Pretty miraculous though. I didn't know this was possible.
I tried this method on 2 PS3 games, and the end result was a fail. After a lengthy amount of time using the 3000 and 5000 grit paper and the recommended turtle wax scratch remover, I was not able to restore the original sheen on the discs' surface. However, the deep scratches were gone after using the recommended sand paper grits. Still, this was not good enough for the game console to read the disc. I strongly advise against this method since there is no guarantee that your CD or DVD will be repaired.
@@electronicsNmore All I am saying to folks out there is to "repair at their own risk". Good for you if your method works for you. I must also point out that you left a huge chunk out of your video, and I understand that it is to not waste the viewers' time. Much appreciated there, but still, it is a very specific repair process that likely a lot of folks will fail at.
Will this method work for a single deep scratch at the edge of a music CD or do I need to go with a lower number on the first sandpaper? Also you never did show how you cleaned off the excess polish afterwards. Did you run it under the tap water and dry it off with a microfiber cloth?
I did this and my hand started glowing, Like a glow bug. I tried using warm water and that helped. Most of the neon glows went down the drain. Wii sports back in action!
Thanks a lot for this nice video! Did you try it on ps1 games? I've tried on one that was at least starting but it's not starting anymore. I think it's not polished enough because it's not very bright like yours, but i've been polishing it for a while with wet paper. Maybe it's my paste, is it really important? On your video your disc seemed already very good after the 3000 grit paper.

Yes, many will remove fine scratches from a car's clearcoat finish. Make sure the abrasive paper is wet, and you keep rinsing. Use steady pressure, and near the end use lighter pressure. No reason to have more scratches if you do a good job and finish it off with the scratch/swirl remover.

Bro, I only need to fix 1 little scratch that's keeping my disk from going to the main menu. I'm not about to cratch/sand/resurface the whole disk just to fix 1 scratch. Any advice?
Removing a thin layer of clear plastic doesn't cause any problems because the laser is being focused at a certain distance, which is the center of the disc.
The "code" is on the silver layer (the back of the "label"). The clear plastic protects this layer, so can be buffed without ruining it. Getting a scratch on the "label" side can kill a disc permanently.
I posted a link in the video description area for the lowest cost way to get all the different grades of abrasive paper. Walmart has the scratch and swirl remover. Thanks for watching!

Auto parts store or Amazon for 5000
@@electronicsNmore yeah! was just about to order one, thank you, will update! id also note that after all it did read the disk but it's probably my fault maybe for polishing too much with the 1000

How did the 5000 grit work out for you? Does your drive read the disc now?
Bro, I only need to fix 1 little scratch that's keeping my disk from going to the main menu. I'm not about to cratch/sand/resurface the whole disk just to fix 1 scratch. Any advice?
I gave great advice in the video. You cannot try repairing one scratch, the entire disc must be treated, otherwise you'll end up with low spots.
How about brasso? Think that'd work?
Where is the code embedded on the CD? seems strange your taking off all that plastic but it still works
I’m saying this In 2020 lol but did the abrasive pad come with the package also do I need it?
I posted a link in the video description area for the lowest cost way to get all the different grades of abrasive paper. Walmart has the scratch and swirl remover. Thanks for watching!
electronicsNmore Wii sports is worth 30 bucks now 😂
$10 is much cheaper than $30. 🤣🤣
electronicsNmore think this would work with GameCube games lol
2k 99 grind yes
would small circular motions work best ?
What's more important are the materials being used.
right. I like what you did here, this definitely helps thankyou
Do this take off all the scratches like not visible at all?
Hi Bob. Only if you do it long enough, and the scratches aren't too deep. Thanks for watching!
@@electronicsNmore ok thanks
Hi, I have question. Does it work with Dual layer DVDs? Trying to fix Super Smash Bros Brawl
Should work fine on all.
@@electronicsNmore OK, thanks
Do you know if armor all works by chance?
No Billy. It won't remove scratches.
I have a really deep scratch will it work for that
It's a lot more work to get out a deep scratch.
Is it possible
is it worked for dvd that damage by UV?
It should, the same thing happens to car headlights.
What can you use instead of that paste at the end?
Headlight polishing paste, or "Scratch and Swirl" remover for a car at Walmart. Thanks for watching!
DVD make good targets for skeet and trap shooting.
Also I recently used gum out carb cleaner to clean head light on my 2004 Venture Chevy. Made them clear again. Use test patch first though.שלום
Small circles in CD can we remove? that CD is very important.. or there is any technian can help With that?
Kindly reply....
My process works, but you need to take your time and use the correct materials.
