Blue de Chanel parfum is my absolute favorite fragrance. Blue fragrances might be generic and common but it doesn’t mean they aren’t beautifully crafted
I also prefer the parfum over the edp and edt. I do wish it had a heavier grapefruit note tho. I love the heavy lemon up top but I'd it had grapefruit as well I think it would "pop" alot more like D&G light blue forever. The idea behind 'blue' fragrances has always intrigued me. You have so many different kinds of 'blue' frags, from Oriental woody, to aquatic, to spicy, to green, to floral, to citrusy, to ambery. I think it's more a marketing thing, playing on that first incredibly popular fragrance Bleu de Chanel. Is anything that's 'fresh' (as opposed to 'dark' and more mysterious) considered a 'blue' fragrance? It just makes me wonder if Chanel came out with a blockbuster fragrance and called it Green de Chanel (or Vert de Chanel, keeping with the French,) would there suddenly be a new category of "Vert" or "Verte" fragrances that would all share some sort of characteristic with the Chanel? Would we all start referring to that new category? Probably. But I'm not sure it's more helpful to pile all of one type of scent into a category and call it 'blue' or 'green,' rather than just stick with what a scent actually smells like, like, actual notes. 'Blue' isn't a note. Lime, coconut, amber, patchouli, musk - these are notes, along with thousands of others, and in my experience, it helps more knowing the specific notes or accords in a fragrance rather than just going with a 'blue' designation and thinking I'll like it because of that designation. I've been told Acqua di Gio Profumo is considered a 'blue' fragrance. If so, I'd have to count it my favorite. And on the cheaper end of things, can't go wrong with the best selling blue going: Nautica Voyage. They're not exactly night-and-day, but they're different enough to warrant a bit more information than just 'it's a blue fragrance.'
I’d say the reason it’s so generalized is simply due to the fact that “blue fragrances” are all based around the heavy use of ambroxan, so much so that they all have similarities to the point where it makes sense to categorize them as such. To that point, I don’t really think ADG Profumo is a blue scent however it is one of my favorites as well. I’m all for categorizing scents accordingly as I do here on the channel (woody, aromatic, boozy, vanilla, tobacco, citrus, citrus-aromatic, aquatic, etc) but your typical blue fragrance fits in so much that it makes sense to group them. “Blue” isn’t a note, but ambergris/ambroxan is-which is the sole focus of blue fragrances. Realistically most if not all blue fragrances fit into the “aromatic” category, but how misleading would that be to only refer to them as “citrus aromatic” or “woody” without also disclosing that they have a stark similarity to 100+ other fragrances on the market? “Blue” fragrances can have wildly varying more breakdowns while still smelling similar. In a lot of cases note breakdowns are usually strategically put together by the marketing department solely to sell the scent. So that’s why we group, because notes don’t tell all. Scent character does.
@@ChaosFragrances Appreciate that response! The only thing I know about ambroxan is that it's a derivative of clary sage. It's often described as 'warm,' 'woody,' 'leather,' 'spicy.' Which is interesting, given that usually 'blue' fragrances are associated with having a 'fresh,' 'shower gel'- type vibe. Which, to my mind, is sort of opposite the description of ambroxan. But interesting nonetheless. Yeah, I'm not opposed to the categorization of fragrances, but it can sometimes get confusing. For example, I had Aqua di Gio Profumo described as 'blue' to me by a perfumer, as well as Dior Sauvage. And when I put one on one wrist and one on the other, they seem similar in many ways (as does Bleu de Chanel). Even Franck Olivier's take on AdG is called 'Blue Touch'. So I dunno. I'll trust your knowledge. It's vastly more than mine. But again, sometimes just confusing. I wonder if there will soon be a designation (maybe 'brown'?) for all the fragrances now relying on Iso-E-Super, which seems to have taken the perfume world by storm. Anyway, thanks for taking the time, and for all the great videos.
Not sure about its relation to clary sage but Ambroxan is one of the key constituents of ambergris which is made in the digestive system of sperm whales!
@@saahilthukral Yeah apparently ambroxan is synthetized from sclareol, a molecule extracted from clary sage. And you're right, it's also naturally present in ambergris.
