Basically... Longshore drift occurs when waves hit the beach at an angle (depending on the direction of the wind) and carry material with them, then throw pebbles to the top of the beach by a swash, then the backwash pulls sand straight back due to gravity, this process happens in a zig-zag pattern along the beach. To slow down longshore drift, people built wooden partitions called Groynes that trap material on the beach and prevent it from being carried away. I hope this helps:)
