Cate Blanchett on Becoming Lydia Tár | Apple Music

  • Australian actor Cate Blanchett sits down with Zane Lowe to reflect on her experience embodying renowned composer Lydia Tár in the film TÁR.
Though she is not a musician in her real life, Cate Blanchett molds herself to fit into the role of one of the greatest living composer-conductors for the film. Cate explains how she experienced major imposter syndrome while acting as the first-ever female music director of a major German orchestra. She and Zane also discuss more broadly the impact of music and humanity's relationship with sound.

Cate Blanchett is the Meryl Streep of her generation, no doubt. I am not sure it this statement does her justice since she is in a whole league of her own but I do mean that in the most complementary way. She is indeed unique and I am grateful for being able to observe this spledid actor in all of her glory. Seeing her is just like being able to see the beatles live once more - the peak of human genius. Thank you for your contribution to the human race! Thank you for your existence!

her approach to embody the character by listening to sounds, beats, music while talking to people or going for a slow walk should be given prodigious recognition. An actor can be good at pretending, but cate was the character itself. No wonder it felt like a documentary rather than a movie

Tar was my favorite movie of the year. I was so in for michelle yoeh and EEAAO but i simply must concede to the sheer artistry of this film. What I love about tar tho and just an underlying theme of the film is that artistry can excuse bad behavior. I don't see the movie as making the case that artistry can excuse bad behavior at all. It does ask the viewers to wrestle with the role of an artist in society. What I find interesting is that Lydia got her comeuppance but the movie lets her keep the love for making music which in a way retains some humanity in her

@@michaelburns5122 I much much prefer Cate's performance. Here's my philosophical take. Who are you? It's a question we don't talk about enough. We live in a society that tries to define us based on our roles, labels, status, background & belongings. Yet how can this be us if we are constantly changing? The only thing relatively stable is our inner awareness. Lydia is identified by her role as a top conductor with power & ties her identity & value as a person to it. When she loses this, she loses her sense of self. Yet this existential crisis becomes the turning point towards her spiritual growth. She travels, she confronts the reality of the exploitation of women, immerses herself in the local culture (going for a boat ride & even requesting to swim) and becomes open to conducting for a fandom movie perhaps for the love of conducting or perhaps as she wouldn't know who she was without being able to do so, however humbling the level of music may be. In a society that reveres traditional career success and power, the movie is also a comment on how the commerce of art corrodes the art and the person itself. Are you doing it for the love of the art itself or for the prestige, power & money it might bring? Lydia had many videos of the conductor in her home, is highly aware of the artform of the conductor, strives for perfection in the way in which she wants each piece to be played so she has a strong level of artistic integrity to her. It's the corrosive power of the commercialism of her art, the corrosion of society's philosophical nature & her lack of understanding of her true inner self that causes the beautifully stacked house of orchestral cards to come crashing down. It feels like a metaphor for the society we live in. Yet there's hope, she did go to Peru previously with the other two girls perhaps for an Ayuhausca retreat, she's travelling in a country that is less materially wealthy yet we see many more smiles and she is able to spend time away from what became a toxic environment for her. Yet it was only toxic because of her underlying tendencies. The need to present a false self in order to feel good enough. The whole movie helps points me to the answer of whether you can separate the art and the artist.

    • @Bexrt

Very irritating how Zane Low keeps mansplaining to Cate. His insights are not what we are interested in because he is supposed to be doing the interviewing right? Cate in mid flow making a point gets interrupted by Zane with something incredibly banal, he doesn’t seem to realize how brilliant Cate is. She however gets it when Zane says “...Lydia Tar finds it difficult connecting with people”, and Cate replies “Don’t we all”. Maestro indeed.

She's those kinds of actresses that they don't make anymore. I love her, and what she represents.

It felt like a documentary only in the extremely stark quality of most of the film - lots of information and not peering a lot into the personal. There's a great tension built over the first ninety minutes where nothing "plot-y" happens - it doesn't feel like a fictional drama at all. The drama is saved for the last 50minutes.

I didn't understand it either. Both Todd and Cate kept saying the film was about the corruption of power. If Lydia is power, why not give a full picture of her ? If the film warns against power, why not make that warning as broad as can be. I feel like they left stones unturned. What is power to start with ?

There are so many great moments in this piece, but learning that Cate listens to Oasis. I didn't think I could think she is any cooler, but I was wrong. I saw Oasis on tour that year, and hearing Liam sing Slide Away was... if you weren't singing along with tears streaming down your face you didn't have a pulse. Oh and TÁR is a masterpiece! If you have not seen it and you consider yourself a cinephile? Go now, and watch it. Who knew Nick Nightegale could write and direct. :D

@@mammadijacopo3347 agreed. There is a giant hole in cinema where Stanley Kubrick once stood, no one director will ever fill this void. And for the writer director of this movie to have played a character who's introduction was through the f/0.7 Zeiss lens used for Barry Lyndon is a nice piece of cinema trivia. But I think TÁR and movies like Drive My Car are worth stopping and taking a look at, I think they are a move in the right direction.
