I will say that I used this company to repair my GPU. They are great and will repair anything that's wrong on the motherboard. I damaged the sound card connection and they repaired it with no additional charge. It was a 7 day turn around but as soon as I paid for the repair they shipped the package out to me the same day. I received the package the next day. Great service! I would recommend.
@@PowerbookMedic hi I have that exact isssue now…I ordered and replaced a blank SSD - but install of high Sierra - will not go. I want to send it to you - now
It's quite unfortunate that AMD never actually fixed the defect with these Radeon HD 6xxx series chipsets, allowing these machines to be repaired properly and permanently. Because of this, any "new" GPU chipset you solder onto one of these 820-2915/2914 boards is simply going to fail again, and last no longer than the original GPU chipset that came on the board. As such, the only solution that is actually 100% permanent is to completely disable the dedicated GPU via a hardware modification to bypass the gMux IC (which handles the dynamic GPU switching on these systems). Doing this will get the system to a point where it does not detect the AMD GPU at all, and runs exclusively on the Intel HD Graphics 3000 integrated graphics. I've done this to dozens of machines now, and it, by far, is the best solution for this issue.
Yeah a bypass is the longest lasting solution for sure. We have done a few of these as well. However, some software will not run on the Intel graphics card and requires the faster Nvidia chipset. Thats the main problem with a bypass unfortunately.
All software should run just fine on the Intel HD Graphics... It's no different than a 13" MacBook Pro at that point, which don't have dedicated graphics to begin with. As long as you have full graphics acceleration in the OS, then all software should work no issues.
@@dosdude1 Might it last a bit longer if one somehow manages to use it with the bottom cover removed? In other words, is it only a heat issue that causes the 6750 to fail or will it fail anyway?
We're doing GPU bypasses instead of replacement due to GPU supply issues. More info can be found at : www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/pages.php?pageid=67
Dude, really like the video but just a bit of advice! Roll the solder over the pads without touching the tip on them! This can cause deformed pads and I've seen it before when touching the tip on them! :)
Thanks for the advice. It is true that you can damage the pads, but I'm not adding that much pressure on the tip. Still a good reminder to be careful not to do that though.
I know nothing about tgis, but by watching the vid, thats what i was thinking too! "Wouldnt it be better if those things werent rubbed on?"🤔 ha! Thanks for the answer to my doubt!!
Hey! I'm back! I used your service before and love the quality of service. I have a question... Can you guys check my power source on my motherboard on my MacBook? I notice a lot of buzzing noises coming from my Mac when I have the power adapter plugged in and heard through external speaker using a stereo cable splitted into a left and right 1/4" cable. Hopefully I explained this good enough for you to know what I'm talking about.
I'd recommend trying a different Apple Brand power adapter first off to see if the noise in the port is still there. If it's still there I'd recommend trying a different outlet and making sure you are using a grounded power cable. If it's still there we'd have to see the unit to see what's going on.
excellent video. my 2011 15" MBP just failed with what seems the obvious GPU problem. I get the Apple logo and the boot progress bar and then the screen goes gray. Just entered a work order and will be shipping out to you first of next week. This after Apple certified repair center told me that they no longer repair these because there aren't any more parts from Apple and that I should just scrap the unit. What a waste. I had upgraded to an SSD, 16 GB and a new battery and it was like a blazing fast new computer. Spending $350 to get my machine back is a LOT better than spending upwards of $12-1500 for a new (used) MBP.
Very interesting video. Thank you. I have a question. I have an early 2011 working ok. In case I get in trouble with GPU is it a solution if I find a working motherboard with working GPU from a same early 2011 MBP like mine, and replace it to my MBP early 2011 ?? Thank You.
This is a great video! My 2011 MBP is having similar but not exactly the same issue. Since I can't get to the latest mac OS, I'm debating whether to just take any repair budget and put it towards a mac mini with the M1 chip instead. I used my 2011 MBP from 2011 until 2018 when I bought a 2017 MBP. Until then I had never ever had a laptop last that long in my life. It was till a backup computer for my wife and I until miid 2020 when the video started acting up.
Oh Man... I wish There was a guy like you back in Europe, maybe Iberia were I live.. I already gave so much money away to solve this problem to guys that told me they swap the gpu and even thought the prob came back. After I saw this video, I pretty sure they didn’t, since I doubt they had the equipment..
Are the new chips you used a revised version? Will they still have the same problems as the old ones? EDIT: Also how could I do this myself without buying a 16,000$+ machine, what would you recommend?
SETH They are a newly manufactured chip. The machine is not made for high GPU usage. So if you use it like that, it will eventually fail again. Unfortunately, no you cannot do this repair without the machine.
Since they no longer are replacing the discrete AMD GPUs and are doing a bypass instead, you need to know that if your are dual-booting into Windows that Windows will no longer work, since it uses only the discrete GPU. You can, however, install Parallels and continue to run Windows using only the internal Intel GPU. This is not a plug for Parallels, just something to know.
Howdy. I have a 2011 17" MBP that has a bum GPU. I had the thing warrantied a few years back before apple was about to end the program. They actually replaced the mobo/gpu/screen and it was great for a while (switched from the original nvidia to AMD saying it would be fine and that the issue was with the nvidia GPUs). But sadly I've ran into a similar issue where the AMD GPU is failing. I've disabled the AMD GPU via software, which is great for every day use, but since I'm just running on the Intel GPU now, it's certainly not great at running anything that involves graphics. My question is, if I send my macbook into you guys to fix, do you do anything above and beyond replacing the GPU to ensure that the problem does not happen again? As I understand it, it's either a design flaw in the GPU itself or a cooling issue with the MBP causing these GPUs to fail. Thanks in advance.
Bugger! I have this board (820-2915 A) and I am been getting the same symptoms of the green lines. I have an early 2011 MBP Silver bezel (although it says late 2010 in about) that was having graphic issues a few years ago. Luckily I managed to get the M.Board replaced within the Apple recall program just before it ended. They fitted this board. It has been running fine until December when I started to get intermittent immediate power offs. Roll onto early Jan and I started to get a grey screen and eventually see the green lines appear upon start-up.. I was hoping that it was the capacitor for the frame buffer but upon further digging and seeing this video I have come to the conclusion that the problem is the GPU. I need to decide whether a GPU replacement with be worth it for me for a device this old.
@@PowerbookMedic Is there more than one level of gpu failure? I had the vertical green lines, and did the work around. Fine for awhile, now it won't boot at all. No SMC or PRAM reset response, no chime. None of the startup key options work. Just some noise from the optical, fans, and led light is on. I had it running on a new SSD, but then 2 months later, I suddenly get a terminal screen with a scrolling message of it can't find Disk0s2. I shut it down, but the fans came on later and no screen. It was dead after that. Getting ready to replace the logic board as the only solution. Any other possibilities? Thanks.
If your looking to get a few more years out of your 2011 Macbook Pro this is a good solution if your a light user on graphics but if your heavy user id strongly recommend either upgrading to 2012 Macbook Pro and not have this issue ever again or if your DIY person you can for almost same price buy used 2012 logic board and used screen off ebay and reuse the rest of the parts from your 2011 and have a better Apple Macbook Pro 2012 with USB 3.0 support even which what i ended up doing.
So the 2012 MBP doesn't have these graphic card issues? Is it manufacturer specific ie Do AMDs fail more than the ones with Nvidia GPU? I'm still using my late 2011 MBP 15" the AMD model and use gfxcardstatus to force the integrated graphics. Is it worth getting a 2012? I want to be able to swap out drives still (so no MPB after early 2012) and the 2012 has usb 3 vs usb 2 on the 2011 so faster data transfer and higher power output over usb.
@@jimjones3287 As far as i know it was only known with faulty AMD GPU and early 2012 non retina display Nvidia GPU where not affect in any way and depends the USB 3.0 upgrade was nice have. Im still using it today after 4 year of heavy use of video editing hasn't skip a beat.
Generally the turn around time is 3-5 days plus shipping time. Considering you are in Atlanta, most shipments will get to us from there in around 1-2 days. The holidays will add some time to the turnaround as we are getting into the end of the year, so that is also something to keep in mind.
Hi It looks you are using the shuttle star sv550 I notice your profile on segment 4 the top heater goes to 280 degrees for almost 75 second and bottom is 250 degrees Does not burn the chip at this temperature?
We change the profile we use and temperature ranges based on many factors. It is not a set it and forget it profile. For this particular video the temperature had been raised and no, it did not burn the chip.
Can I send you a video of what my 17" 2011 MacBook Pro is doing during start-up? My screen does not have the Apple logo or the lines through it. I took it into Apple 2 months ago, and they said it was probably the GPU, and where more concerned about selling me a new MacBook Pro. Thanks
Powerbook Medic do you mean that it will eventually come back even with the replacement GPU you install ? I do a lot of photo video and sometimes 3D renders. Edit : just read other comments and got my answer yes it will fail again especially with my use of it.
We generally use the AMD Radeon HD 6750M, which is also a GPU that Apple uses on a version of these 2011 boards. The 6750M GPU, with our experience, lasts longer and has a lot less problems with overheating.
@@jimjones3287 The AMD chips are on the boards that tend to fail - the 2011. The Nvidia chips are just not compatible with these boards. The 2012 boards didn’t have this kind of issue with the GPU’s.
@@PowerbookMedic Sorry but as Im reading your answers things come up to me, What is the difference between this one and AMD Radeon HD 6770M wich is the one mine has, sorry to bother you but I have 2 of this
Is the GPU an upgrade over what was there before in any way? Why did you remove the holders on the GPU ram if you didn't replace that ram? One reason I ask is because if someone were to do this to an older board, maybe they want a new GPU and more memory for it. That's one of the old backs for the older models, they have weaker GPUs and not much memory.
Karl Jay No, it’s not an upgraded GPU. I remove the edge bonding because heat makes it expand which makes the RAM chips move and messes up the solder joints.
I'm here 6 years after my GPU failed on my Early 2011 MacBook Pro 15" failed. Just dumped some money into a SSD, 16 GB of RAM and replaced the optical drive with a 2 TB HDD. Now I'm realizing that my MB Pro may just be a ticking time-bomb no matter what I do. Ironically, when the GPU first failed 5 years after I bought the MacBook, I took it in to Apple who repaired the issue, but it looks like they just replaced the logic board since it's still a AMD Radeon HD 6490M. How much would a GPU replacement cost in relation to replacing the logic board with a 2012 MB Pro 15"?
You can get more info on the logic board repair service here: www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/pages.php?pageid=67. A board repair is cheaper than replacing the board.
Curious how it’s going for you - I have the same issue - and did the SSD - BEFORE learning of this - lmk how much it cost to fix -maybe appriciate IT…tks !!!
And one last, the major GPU failure would be i'm guessing the vertical pink lines and then black screen after load up prior to shutting down. Thanks in advance.
My 2011 MBP went a very strong 7 years of near constant use when the horizontal lines through the apple and then hang/fans spinning on a grey screen. I can get it to come up and be usable if I let it sit at greyscreen long enough with the fans running and then hard reboot a few times. Not sure if it's a gpu or mainboard issue but as it was still a very viable machine I hope to get it fixed. Do you have a full diagnostic to run or do you typically assume gpu problems with the vertical lines and replace that as a first step?
How can you guarantee that the GPU's used by your store is not a old used and refurbished chip? (It is possible to fix those temporarily but they we run into the same problem after a while). If I followed correctly you were not willing to give any info about Your source. Prove me wrong but if my info is correct it is not possible to buy the CPUs which Originally purchased by Apple. I know that Apple had some remaining stocks left but as we all know it is not possible to get a hand on those. Do you provide any warranty for your repair? How long?
Here in the UK we are told by Mac that there is no fix for the GPU on a Macbook Pro A1286 logic board as there are no replacement chips. Do you have a working chip which will give same or better performance and will you repair something from the UK? Thanx in advance.
I have a MacBook pro 2011 that recently had a gpu failure. I managed to disable the faulty gpu but I am left with less graphics performance. Could you have it replaced?
I guess it depends on how exactly you disabled it, but yes, we perform the GPU replacement. You can find more info on our send in service at www.powerbookmedic.com/mac-service.php
So if suddenly a blue screen of death (with black vertical lines) appears with failure to boot, that's an IGPU issue? How much would a replacement be for that, and how much to replace the whole logic board?
Etan Grant Yes, that is a GPU issue. The cost to replace the logic board depends on the processor speed. You can check out our refurbished ones on our website, www.powerbookmedic.com
Silly question: would it be feasible to replace that AMD chip with the NVIDIA from a 2010 MacBook Pro? Or even the GPU from a 2012 MacBook Pro? I'm asking because everywhere I read that even replacing this chip with another AMD the new one will ultimately die as well so replacing it with a different chip sounds like a better fix to me - as long as it's doable which I don't know if it is… But if it is doable it'll definitely make a great video!! :D
Yea I ordered a new logic board from someone and they claimed the board had a newer chip AMD 1717 and well after 24 hours of working it also failed! My system boots with checkered pixles and then just shuts off! The one company keeps telling me that I cant fit a 2012 board inside the 2011 body. ifix it claims you can! I wonder what makes this one company ( not your company ) keep claiming it cant be done when so many folks say it can!
I heard that the fix is temporary fix. is it true? I owned a 2011 15" MacBook Pro with lines on the screen. how much is the fix, how long take and what for how long is the warranty on the repairs? im interested in fixing it. thank you
We warranty the repair for 6 months. Generally, if the machine doesn't have issues in the first 6 months after the repair you likely won't have issues beyond that. However there is no way to say exactly how long the repair will last as it depends mostly on how the machine is being used and the environment. If the machine is left to do video processing on bed sheets for example, the life will be significantly less than someone who uses the machine for casual browsing at a desk. If someone is doing video editing 24 hours a day, the life will be less than someone who is just using the machine casually a few hours a day.
From my understanding even if you find a good batch of gpus its still going to fail because AMD never released a good revision of the gpu. Correct me if im wrong. Which is why i just do the hardware bypass and inform the customer the pros and cons.
@@gmorb666 It is true, they didn't release an updated revision of the GPU. However, we install newer manufactured ones. We put them through vigorous GPU stress tests and offer a 6 month warranty. Triniti Coclough Yes, it is more than likely a GPU problem. It depends on the programs you run, how quickly it fails. Graphic intensive applications generate a lot of heat. We would be more than happy to take a look at it though to diagnosis the problem.
What is the price to fix this currently using Linux and back door into the computer using Linux recovery image which automatically by passes the AMD chip and uses the Intel chip. I still want to get it fixed though. Thanks
I'd pay 20 bucks just for your opinion on a 2011 Late 13" MBP that has an intermittent pixelating three beeps failure that I think I've been able to whittle down to either a bad SODIMM slot or a bad CPU memory controller. I've taken everything apart, cleaned, got video of the failure, booted with alternate ram ports loaded, bought new ram, tested without batt, HD and variations of that - about to try a raw boot from a USB of a diff OSX to see if it affects it. How can you get a bad CPU Memory controller? Logic board was replaced in 2016 already, so it's dead as a do-do but I really want to know what the error is (Appreciate fairly impossible to pinpoint without testing rails etc). Still will to pay for opinion though, I hate throwing away good kit.
3 Beeps is a ram failure. If you've tried new ram and you're sure it's good, try one chip at a time in each slot. If it works in one slot and not the other then you have a bad ram bay and likely need to replace the logic board.

I have had my 17 inch 2011 mbp repaired under Apple’s repair program and it has died again 2 years later. Won’t boot and pretty obvious to me that it is the gpu again. Is there anything different about your repair process that might extend the longevity of the repair over the process that Apple employed? Put another way, is it worth putting another $300 into the machine again or will the gpu simply fail again eventually?
I believe Apple's process isn’t to replace the GPU but to replace the board and re-serialize it. We do use newer manufactured GPUs. However, I wouldn’t say that under heavy GPU usage it will last forever. These boards / GPU’s were recalled through Apple because of it being a flaw in design. They generate too much heat. With heavy GPU usage, it’s possible to eventually fail again.
Just GPU Bypass it. No need to to add insult to injury if the GPU will just fail again. Its not hard it can be done in 20 minutes or less once you get used to it and you can charge half of what you do for the gpu.
Most times the only option is the BGA replacement. We'll be happy to get it up and running for you. The link to send it in is: www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/pages.php?pageid=67

Do you ever bake the PCB before desoldering the old gpu to prevent delimitation on the board ? do you bake the Gpu itself before ? Nice job Also did not see u apply flux before installing the new gpu ? Did you ?
Yes. The profile we use on our BGA machine preheats the board and chip before heating up enough to solder it in place. Also, yes, we did apply a thin layer of flux before putting the chip on. Sorry we did not show that in the video.

If you just heat up a board (such as in an oven or using a blower), that will just reflow the GPU, and yes reflowing is a very temporary solution. You can usually expect 1-3 months with a reflow. However, replacing the GPU, such as we show in this video, will provide a much longer term solution.
@@PowerbookMedic I did that & lasted me 7 months not a very long solution. I decided to purchase a 2012 macbook that does not have same problem £400 was worth it ) These laptops are for the bin its pointless as the air system is rubbish & will heat up again with gpu issue. Its not good for film editors or high use that uses gpu a lot. Gauranteed to fail again :(
I agree another TH-camr Dosdude1 has good video on fixing all kinds different apples and 2011 15-17' where just flaw machine due to fault ATI graphics that was never 100% fixed even after replacement or replaced chip. I'm in Australia. My Macbook Pro (2011) 15" committed suicide the other day on 06/12/2018. Diagnosis was a Faulty graphics chip that isn't replaceable/can't be fixed. My understanding is it has both an Intel HD 3000 512MB and also an AMD Radeon HD 677cm 1GB. If I recall correctly, at time of purchase (early 2012) I bought one of these as an extra 'cause I needed more power for multimedia editing. It's worth mentioning I got a repair done in Cambodia by an approved (or recommended) Apple Repairer in June 2018. Except for PhotoBooth video recording/playback which had already stopped streaming smoothly months previous, the repair worked okay for 5 months. At the time of repair they told me in 'Khmernglish' that they "Replaced VGA" but had to source a non-original chip so I don't know if that applies to one of the two aforementioned chips. What should I do? Is it worth sending you the board from AU? /
Most likely you need a proper BGA replacement, but it gets difficult to diagnose when other people have worked on a board previously. We've seen some pretty crazy things people have tried on boards. As for if it's worth it, that's entirely a personal call based on budget and if you want to upgrade to a newer system or not. One thing you have to factor into your cost equation is the shipping to us from Australia. If you sent in just the board, that would substantially reduce the shipping cost and is what most of our international customers opt to do.
For board only it is $249.95. If you send the complete machine it is $344.95. We replace the GPU and don't just reflow the chip. You can find more info on our site at www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/pages.php?pageid=67
We guarantee it for 6 months with our warranty. However, we have had multiple customers let us know that the computer is still running after a couple years of use. It all depends on how you use the computer and what you use it for. The results will vary.
@@PowerbookMedic hi. If the chip is a newer build, shouldn't it last nice and long like you would expect a new MacBook Pro to last, with moderate, or even heavy usage?
There really is no way to give an approximation of the time it will last as everyone's environment and definition of moderate or heavy usage varies. The main issues with these units is that they overheat which causes the GPU to fail. If you are aware of this and take steps to keep the unit cooler it will last longer than say if you are doing video editing on a blanket.

Very well done, videos don't get any better than this.
Mike S Thanks for the support!
@@mhzgwnsntip3435 That may help a little, but it will definitely still fail at some point.

Do you happen to know how much this service costs? Ty
Very cool, very detailed, great video! I might have to send mines in to get that GPU replaced as well.
Hey!
Jesse Brown Thanks for the business! Look forward to helping you out.

Great Video. The skills and tools look a bit too advanced for my heat gun and microsoldering combination I have in my shed though!!!!
Do you have similar fix for the 2011 mbp 17"?
I fixed mine with Ubuntu, which is a fix for any Mac, regardless of whether or not the discrete GPU is faulty. ;)
Oh Man... I wish There was a guy like you back in Europe, maybe Iberia were I live.. I already gave so much money away to solve this problem to guys that told me they swap the gpu and even thought the prob came back. After I saw this video, I pretty sure they didn’t, since I doubt they had the equipment..
Do you have any data on how long will this repair last on average? I have read where this type of repair will fail in a short amount of time.
R. A. It all depends on what programs you are running. We offer a 6 month warranty and our return rate is very low.
Great video. Can you replace the dual RAM sockets on an 820-2915 or very similar logic board? If yes at what cost?
Mh Zgwns Ntip No, those are not replaceable unfortunately.
woow! I love the geekiness of this! Subscribing!
@@PowerbookMedic Ok thanks
How much would the average cost of getting a new gpu added be and is it worth it?

cost more to fix it than it's worth.
I did the software fix (disable GPU) which at least allows me to use my MacBook again until I replace it with a laptop.
@@tautegu You said replace it with a laptop as if the Macbook is not a laptop!

I'm still using my late 2011 MBP 15" the AMD model and use gfxcardstatus to force the integrated graphics. Is it worth getting a 2012? Is the GPU an upgrade over what was there before in any way? Why did you remove the holders on the GPU ram if you didn't replace that ram? One reason I ask is because if someone were to do this to an older board, maybe they want a new GPU and more memory for it. That's one of the old backs for the older models, they have weaker GPUs and not much memory.
Karl Jay No, it’s not an upgraded GPU. I remove the edge bonding because heat makes it expand which makes the RAM chips move and messes up the solder joints.

I can get it to come up and be usable if I let it sit at greyscreen long enough with the fans running and then hard reboot a few times. Not sure if it's a gpu or mainboard issue but as it was still a very viable machine I hope to get it fixed.

No, we do not sell them.
@@PowerbookMedic any insight as to a trustworthy source? This seems like a fun project!
How much does it cost to get this fixed?
How long does this typically last?
We warranty the repair for 6 months. Generally, if the machine doesn't have issues in the first 6 months after the repair you likely won't have issues beyond that. However there is no way to say exactly how long the repair will last as it depends mostly on how the machine is being used and the environment. If the machine is left to do video processing on bed sheets for example, the life will be significantly less than someone who uses the machine for casual browsing at a desk. If someone is doing video editing 24 hours a day, the life will be less than someone who is just using the machine casually a few hours a day.
Is there a similar repair for the 2011 Mac Mini with the same AMD GPU problem?
Not that I am aware of.
Is it possible to replace the thunderbolt 2 port with a thunderbolt 3 and get the same speed as a normal thunderbolt 3?
No. This board will not run thunderbolt 3.
Apparently my gpu is gone,. It failed in October of last year, the second gpu replaced by Apple (4 years later) . My screen shows the line but also it flickers and the Apple logo doesn’t shop up clearly but rather in 3 pieces. Could it be more than the gpu? It also keeps rebooting. I would rather spend on a gpu, sell it and buy a new MacBook Pro. Do you sell this gpu part? Or can I send it to to you have it fixed?
Gregorio Rivera Yes, it sounds like the GPU. You can send it into us, just visit our website www.powerbookmedic.com to schedule the repair.
Hi I'm from Mumbai, India. Where are you located and what are the possibilities of me sending you my 2011 MacBook? Cause I just love that machine... 😊

If I were to do this and instead of doing thermal paste I used liquid metal... Would that potentially last longer. Right now I'm needing to do this every 3ish weeks
You should not have to apply thermal paste every 3 weeks, so if that's what you are doing then I would highly recommend a GPU replacement.
@@PowerbookMedic excelent tech support btw, you guys are great, in a late 2011 computer with this problem, how often will you have to change the thermal paste in order to avoid failure again?
@@MrOmarleblanc It really depends on what you are doing. Most people won't have a need to change the thermal paste. However if you're doing graphic intensive applications then you could change the paste but the frequency really depends on what you're doing and the paste you are using.
@@PowerbookMedic I just use the Mac for Video DJing, and just got Thermal grizzly kryonaut, to replace the krappy thermal paste Apple use on repairing, I was thinking on reparing booth and being careful from now on in overheating using gfxCardStatus to force the dedicated gpu and changing thermal every so often to make the GPU last longer if possible. Great Video, thinking on sending my MB to you just a little worried about customs fee when you return it.
Powerbook Medic
Thank you. Is there any type of repair warranty? Would would happen if the GPU failed again within 12 months?
All of our board repairs have a 6 month warranty.
Is there a means to add cooling such as a heatsink or low profile cooling system? Would there be enough space?
I guess anything is possible, but in my opinion there really isn't enough space.
Just GPU Bypass it. No need to to add insult to injury if the GPU will just fail again. Its not hard it can be done in 20 minutes or less once you get used to it and you can charge half of what you do for the gpu.
Tried everything myself, replaced the thermal paste etc. no luck... I’m sending it to u guys

I don't know about the lines, but dec 2015, I had to ship my MBP to Apple as part of the recall. Everything on screen had a reddish violet hue. They gutted it. It was like new when I got it back. Exactly 2 years later it failed again - $550.
I was livid !
I replaced the had that wouldn't boot - a year later. My service guy installed a 1 TB solid state hd works fine.
But I'm getting an annoying 3 beeps at the same time as getting 3 flashes of the Led on the left side. What's all that about? The memory is not loose but I have to power off and restart each time this happens . Very aggravating!
What's going on with that ?

any easy way to disable the graphic chip?
I have macbook pro 15” late 2011 it’s showing apple logo clear without lines but it won’t start in it just keep restarting. could this be a GPU problem or something else??
It most likely is a GPU issue if it just keeps restarting.
I have the opposite issue my my 15" late 2011, it currently starts fine (esp if I do a PRAM reset) works fine for 5 - 20 min. Then the display "crashes" in one of two ways, causing me to have to restart (and lose anything unsaved...) 1) I see full screen distortions with lines or other visual problems 2) The screen moves over and becomes split screen, the old right side of the screen on the left, a black bar center, and the old left side of the screen on the right. That's also GPU, right? I'm a little confused as to whether the logic board and GPU are distinct on these. Your website only speaks to fixing logic boards, but here your video speaks of GPU as if it's part of the logic board. Can you help me get clear on that? Might be sending in my logic board for you...
What you describe are also classic symptoms of a GPU problem. The GPU (Graphics processing unit) is part of the logic board and that is why it falls under our logic board repair service.
My GPU is gone also...but ive disable it and its on the integrated one...works perfectly...but i play dota 2 on low settings now :D I wonder how long would a new gpu last ??

Do you ever bake the PCB before desoldering the old gpu to prevent delimitation on the board ? do you bake the Gpu itself before ?
Nice job
Also did not see u apply flux before installing the new gpu ? Did you ?
Yes. The profile we use on our BGA machine preheats the board and chip before heating up enough to solder it in place. Also, yes, we did apply a thin layer of flux before putting the chip on. Sorry we did not show that in the video.
Powerbook Medic how much for the compatible early 2012 board replacement... if I need to replace my board might as well upgrade to USB 3
These 2011 macbooks will not work longterm sadly & its just a temporary fix! just add the board in the oven & put it back into the machine make sure you clean it & re add the paste. Your machine will work. You can also use a heat blower for 7 min moving it around. Its a easy process & its free. But once gpu has gone its pointless of fixing it. You better off buying a 2012 model which these gpu issue was fixed, instead of paying for getting it (macbook 2011) fixed for that price. You are wasting your money guys! Reflow does not work guys ) THESE MACBOOK PRO 2011 ARE FOR THE BIN SADLY :( Also new chips are impossible to get as they are discontinued and are no longer made! )
Most so called new GPU chips are fake copies & hence will not last. Again these nonsense reflow does not work )
If you just heat up a board (such as in an oven or using a blower), that will just reflow the GPU, and yes reflowing is a very temporary solution.
@@rrcoster exactly only problems is people still believe the 2011 macbooks will work longterm.
Hey whats the cost of the GPU?
For board only it is $249.95. If you send the complete machine it is $344.95. We replace the GPU and don't just reflow the chip. You can find more info on our site at www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/pages.php?pageid=67
How long will a repair like this last?
