- UPAPADA Lagna is a very important point in the horoscope that enables you to find many important aspects of marriage and children. Ignoring this valuable reference point in the horoscope will lead to wrong reading or predictions. Though for many years people did not discuss much about UPAPADA Lagna, of late, there is a sudden interest in UPAPADA Lagna. Many of my students requested me to do a video on this topic. I hope you learn from this video.

If 12th house lord is in 12th itself, then calculate 10 places from 12th house which will be your upapada lagna (UL). For example if your 12th house is scorpio and mars is in that house then you will calculate 10 places from scorpio which is Leo and your UL is Leo ascendant.

what do you mean by places? Houses or signs? this is not clear all around the internet, where I saw mixed answers. Many resources argue for calculating signs and other resources argue for calculating houses. Also my personal problem is if my ascendent is 29 degrees, 23´ pisces, and the cusp of my twelve house is in aquarius, I dont know if I should calculate from saturn or jupiter. For all people it is clearly impossible to calculate correctly, they dont know the second house size if it is preserved in its original size. Also for people whose natal ascendent is between two signs the upapada lagna is hard to interprete because it would lie in between two signs.

If Lord of the 12th is 10th from the 12th, then count 7 places from the 10th place, as , sir jagannatha hora software is also giving me UL in same method.. sir this method is rite or wrong? my 10th lord satrun is in libra from 12th to 10t

Sir , for Scropio Lagna , I start calculating from tula which is the 12th house. UPL is then karkata /cancer. In this horroscope both juliter and ketu are in karkata/cancer which is the 9th house from scorpio lagna...... Also mars is in the 7th house which is taurus. How will the marital life of this person be?

I have been using the Rasi Chart because the translations indicate that Rasi Chart has to be used. However some horoscope software offers option: use the Rasi Chart or Bhava Chart. I have been getting consistent result using Rasi Chart. In case you have about 20 to 50 horoscopes of failed and successful marriages I am sure you can experiment and find out.

Consider 12th house lord in the 1st house.
If the 12house lord is placed seven houses from the 12th house , we land in the same house if we move 7 places. Is it still a valid UL? For eg . Mars (lord of 12th house) in sixth house
Found the answer! You count ten houses from the sixth house which is the third house.
A native's UL appears to be in Gemini, a dual sign, in the 9th.

In the example where you refer to the Makara ascendant - the 12 th house Lord Jupiter is placed in Meena the fourth house from the 12th ( which is in its own house ....but you refer to it as 7th house in your explanation) Mahariishis exception rule as you had taught earlier says that if the Lord of the 12th is in the 7th house or in his own house then the basic rule does not apply. Am I right Sir?
It is in the 7th from his own house, being the twelfth (Dhanus), not in the 7th house from the lagna.

Count the 10th house house from that house whenever it is the same house. In this case just move 10 houses forward. The rule is the same. For the ARUDHA Lagna of any house the rule is the same. Please write blogs on the UL with case studies so the whole world will know that Astrology is a great science.
Our lineage uses 5th house as reference point and not the 12th. There are two translations of word Anuchar. What are your views on this?

Sir if ul falls in 12th H then should count 10 from from ul(here 12 H)or only 3rd from 12thH(ul) as 7th has-been counted first
Sumanta, if your 12th lord is in the 12th house (own sign), then count 10 houses from that, so in the 9th house. If your 7th lord is in the 12th, then you count 6 more houses to it (12th house is the 6th from th 7th) so AL7 will be in the 6th house. This is not the Upapada lagna!.

Guru Prasad B M In general we say Jupiter, Venus, Waxing moon and unafflicted Mercury as natural benefics and Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu as natural malefics. But for every lagna, there is something called functional malefics and functional benefics. A planet being natural benefic and also functional benefic can be more positive and similarly the other. Please see BPHS for functional benefic and malefic for each ascendant.
Rahu and Ketu can be an rajayogakaraka when if sits in kendra or kona with the lord of kona or kendra. Generally 3,6 and 11 are good places for Rahu, Saturn and Ketu.

You have forgotten one more important exception, just like if the planet is 4 houses from 12th house, you count 10 houses, and the reverse is also true , if the planet is 10 houses away from 12th house, then you count 4 houses from the 12th house itself and place UL there correct ?

Sir my lord of 12th house venus is four houses away from 12th further 4 houses away will bring in on 6th house which is on same axis as 12th house. Do i have to calculate 10 houses from the sixth house to get my upapada lagna? Or is my 12th house only the upapada lagna. I suppose exception rule applies.

+Monisha Bhatia If you understand the principle you do not have to worry. I cannot do it in North Indian chart as most of my clients prefer South Indian Chart. When I worked in Maharshi Mahesh Yogi's Ashram in 1994, they were using North Indian chart all over the world in every centre. I convinced them that the south Indian chart was the best one. Let´s make it clear!! In this video you didn´t state clearly if you calculate position of houses or signs from lord of 12th house.
I saw many resources that are not unified in this matter. Some mention houses need to be calculated (which differ in size for each individual) from the lord of twelve house and others mention signs. Some of my houses are a way larger than signs. Without this clarification people get lost and never know their true upapa lagna.
That is why is invented the term "WRONG UL". So reach the Wrong UL first and then do the adjustments. This way you will get it right. So get the right thing you have to reach the wrong thing first. LOL.
