While I love every second of this wonderful scene, my favourite part is the brief shot of the store clerk, quietly reading his newspaper but also listening appreciatively. He knows he's a witness to something special. I think the clerk represents the audience. He's us.
The moment when she joins in, harmonizing with him is magic. The little look of delight on his face is so genuine.
Everything about this film is genuine, magic, authentic... everything. This song gives me chills everytime I hear it

This is one of those movies that touches us deep in our souls because it's not really a movie, it's real life...A gem of real!
Sometimes people bank their full emotional weight on a song --and their desire to express it, simply, with as few words as possible, can unknowingly project human spirit and struggle so completely, without pretense or ego...it's the most beautiful thing in the world
Once is the best "love story," I have ever watched...the final scene is amazing: it leaves the viewer not knowing where the relationship will go,but the depth of the characters feeling for each other is palpable

The story is so simple and plain, that's what makes it so special.
I remember watching this scene live and in the moment in the theater. I literally knew I was watching movie history. I know this sounds like hyperbole, but I really believe it is one of the most authentic, sweet and beautiful scenes ever in cinema.
This is why this movie is such a gem. If anyone's gonna make a movie about music, they should do what they did here. Begin Again failed to achieve what Once succeeded in. They replaced the rawness and honesty of this movie with heavily edited performances.
A little masterpiece, gentle and thoughtful. Loved it first time round and still do.
It's funny back when I was first married my (now ex) wife was lukewarm on this film but knew I'd love it. Within the first two minutes while he sings say it to me now I was enthralled until the film was over. The marriage had very good reasons for ending and was the best for both of us, we're both better happier people now and get along better. But thinking back on it she's one of the few people I can say I think truly understood me. Thanks for the movie recommendation Jackie. Still love this movie
I hate musicals but my GF at the time convinced me to take her because it sounded like the music flowed naturally from the story- I walked out of the theater amazed, so unexpected and magical

What's hilarious is he says, "This is in C" and what comes out is B. This was a tech error, I'm guessing because the UK uses 25 frames/sec while the US 24. All the official versions are correct but this excerpt is a half step flat.
However, this is the scene they sent out to promote the song when it was nominated for an Academy Award. I met Glen Hansard at a party the day before and mentioned it to him, thinking he must know. He didn't and was horrified. Nonetheless, he won the Oscar the next day. Maybe people LIKE it down a half step and a teeny bit slower?

The film was actually released in 2007 and it was directed by John Carney who also directed "Begin Again", Adam Levine and Keira Knightley's movie.

I’ve no idea how I missed this years ago. Maybe I was meant to discover it now in April 2023. It’s exquisitely magical. How I would love to play the piano once again & sing a duet with a guitarist. It’s been a lifetime since I had an actual connection with any human being who’s kind, who is able to give & receive love. It nearly makes me believe in love again. I think I’ll still stay to myself. If someone is meant to find me, they will. It’s in God’s hands…💗🎶 🎹🙏🏼😊💗

At every step along the way, I knew what Markéta’s character was going to do… especially the moment she left after discussing, “hanky panky”. 😂 So true!
She loved him so, that she recognized he needed to return to his true love. I don’t know Czech, though I’ve visited once, but fairly certain she said, “I love YOU”, at the seaside. 🥲 They learned what they needed from one another, then their souls moved on…
It’s now one of my favorite films. They each ended up exactly where they were meant to be. 💗 p.s. David, I hope you get this reply. I’m listening to the soundtrack today, & I realized something else extraordinary… Markéta’s role required her to be quietly understated in the revelation of her spirit.
