- This video shows the descent down I-70 from the point prior to the Eisenhower Tunnel down to Silverthorne. It is unedited and will show the full drive. We also provide commentary about useful information if you are planning to drive your RV in the Colorado mountains.

Great video and thank you for doing it! We are heading out in August coming down from Montana. Used to live in Vail but first time over the continental divide towing a travel trailer...we have an f250 and tow mode helps keep us pretty restrained. Glad to see it before hand and know what to plan for!
Recently drove our 27 ft Class C RV, first time, from Colorado Springs to Glenwood Falls. We took notes, and drove our Toad separately, before heading out and on to I-70. The uphills proved negotiable, definitely less challenging without a TOAD. Used the Cruise Control all the way, and trusted it to work with the Engine Brake downhill, setting it a little lower on descents. The Cruise Control needed help on some rises, but seldom on descents. Trust your Engine Brake, if available, but only in Cruise Control; they seem to compliment each other. Be observant, but mostly, definitely, avoid speeding or over using your brakes. Thank you for the heads up!

I watched this video to just experience the Eisenhower tunnel alone. Glad to see you big RV drivers kind of educate people on how weight works on big hills and inclines! I've never driven I70 through Colorado but I do drive I24 in Tennessee through the Smoky mountain inclines regularly. I have also seen quite a few big trucks "not engine braking" have to use the stop ramps! I enjoyed the video thank you 😊

I hear of people afraid to drive out here so they don’t visit. I would rather people know what is ahead and then they can be prepared and enjoy a Colorado trip. So much to see in this state.

Doubtful. They help with traction but I think any extended use might cause them to break down. We haven’t had to use ours yet.

Hi, thanks for the video. Two questions, 1) Did you have a towed vehicle attached? 2) Did the motor/transmission hold your speed effectively? We did this two days ago with a Ram 1500 attached and the transmission would not slow the RV/Towed and the transmission would constantly shift up to 4th gear due to the RPMs. I was constantly breaking when it got to 45 mph down to 35. Probably 15 times on the descent. Didn't burn them up but we could smell the asbestos by the bottom. Oh, the descent into Vail is no picnic either! 2020 Entegra Accolade (Similar to the Seneca)
We do tow a Jeep Wrangler. It isn’t as heavy as a truck and we have the Air Force One braking system which ties into the air brakes and simultaneously brakes the toad while we brake the Seneca. That might help. Jeremy downshifts the Allison to 2 or 3 and we never get above third gear. He does tap the brakes a handful of times and we definitely are not the fastest down the mountain. We would rather go slow and not have to tap the brakes as often. And you are right about Vail pass. I’ve personally know someone to flip right off the interstate on that last bend to the left as you head into town when driving during the winter.
We're driving this route in an adapted handicapped van with a ramp underneath. This is scary!!!
You’ll be okay. Just stay in first or second gear.
@@RVHomeschool Our van is automatic. It looks like a beautiful drive though. We will be on our way from West Denver to Richfield, Utah that day. Then Vegas for a few days, and funal destination will be Disneyland for a couple of days. Then back home to Minnesota, but taking 15 through Utah and North Dakota.
Should be doing 35 down the hill and in the tunnel. Please dont get off at exit 205 if you lost brakes… three accidents this year there.
You're correct, back in the late 80's early 90's I was a beer hauler and drove this corridor a lot. I thought vehicles over 35,000 lbs had a speed limit of 35 mph. My gross weight was around 78,000 lbs, my truck did not have a Jake brake, I had to slow down to 10 mph to get down that hill. Good times.

What year is your Seneca? Mine is a 2018 on the s2rv chassis and I've got drum brakes all the way around I do not have disc brakes with a rotor.
Most people watching this video will have disc brakes and rotors. Our drum brakes can overheat too and become useless.
Do RV's have engine breaks like Trucks do?
Our Seneca, with the Allison transmission, has engine brakes. I’m not sure most RVs too but I would imagine most of the super C’s probably do.
What kind of motorhome are you driving ?
Jayco Seneca. It’s a super C on a Freightliner chassis with a Cummins engine.
