As a therapist, I applaud the talk by Stu as he highlighted the importance of looking after children during the divorce. My own parents went through a horrible divorce and I was caught in the crossfire. If only they watched this Ted talk. It would have saved me from a lot of emotional pain.

This talk spoke to me, a collaborative divorce lawyer and mediator. I was moved to tears when Stu talked about his son's broken heart. The audience heard him when he repeated the idea that people spending more money on lawyers rather than family counselors had things backwards.

As a collaborative divorce lawyer and mediator, this talk deeply resonated with me. Stu's heartfelt words about his son's broken heart moved me to tears. The importance of prioritizing family counselors over expensive lawyers struck a chord with the audience, and it is a message that truly needs to be heard.

Wow, that was brilliant! Stu should bring this to the world. As someone who was lucky enough to never experience divorce he brought so many points to light that l would never realize. He actually brought it to life and what he pointed out was so important, about them ending up with eating disorders and screen addictions and alcohol and drug addiction. Not once have l even seen a counselor or clergy involved in divorce. I am so grateful he brought this into my awareness, thank you Stu for such a heartfelt 💙 presentation.

Love, though just a four-letter word, carries a profound message! I hope people from all walks of life truly internalize its significance. It's worth emphasizing that the impact of conflicts within families transcends age; even as adults, the consequences can be long-lasting and arduous, making family gatherings unnecessarily painful and draining.

Love is a four-letter word, too. Powerful message! I hope so many people in so many capacities take this to heart. And to be clear, it doesn’t matter how old the “children” are. I was in my late twenties when my parents divorced. The slings and arrows between the warring factions cause irreparable damage and navigating family events is more often than not unnecessarily painful and exhausting.

Even with a therapist on my mother's side she did so much damage to my sister and me. She wanted revenge and spoke so horribly about my father (who wasn't the best guy tho) at the end I felt like a failure because he was my father and not even my mother would use any more kind way to talk about him. When people used to say that I looked like him, it made me feel like a monster. I think my mom could've used a better way or words to describe what happened and who he was

This TEDx talk had an important message - kids don't belong in the middle of their parents' divorce fights. The speaker, Stu Weintraub, shared how over 1 million kids each year in America are hurt by their parents' divorce conflicts. Stu wants to give these kids a voice. His main idea is to get divorcing parents to focus on mediation instead of lawsuits in court. He wants parents to get help from clergy, counselors, and coaches instead of fighting. Stu used tools to help with his disability while giving the talk. He hopes his talk helps kids caught in divorce conflicts and reduces stigma about disabilities. Stu's talk was inspiring and spread waves of love. I'm glad I got to see it live at TEDxSanDiego.

Those sentiments are great, and if one parent takes the high road, it can be a big help to the kids. However, if the other parent refuses to go to therapy and wants to go scorched earth, there is nothing the emotionally stable parent can do to prevent the lawyer fees and court costs.

As someone that's pretty much about to go through it, youre completely right. But, unfortunately, most people never think about the kids from that point of view.
I personally also do believe that nowadays divorces are thrown around too easily, and couples are together but never want to make an effort to try to work things out, because running away its easier.
Couples, especially with kids, should always try all they can and can think about to try to change their situation in better with the professional help of a specialist.
No matter what, maybe just for a short period of time for the couples that can nanage it better, but kids will always be the ones that hurt the most. And if we chose to put them in this world, we should also try to keep their world as safe and consistent as possible.
Of course, all this is valid for couples having problems of certain kind, I'll never tell a wife that gets beaten on a daily basis to stay.

I'm inspired by his idea of changing how parents divorce in our country by advocating mediation over litigation. The emphasis on seeking support from clergy, counseling, and coaching instead of resorting to court is a brilliant approach. It shows that divorce doesn't have to be a battlefield, but rather a conscious and compassionate process for the well-being of the entire family.

People always say think of the kids. And I did. It’s probably my fault for marrying someone in the first place who has an alcohol problem. I tried Everything with him. Counseling, AAA. You can’t help someone who does not want help. I learned that the hard way. I did NOT want my family broken. But it was not healthy for my daughter or I to constantly see him on 3- 4 day drink binges. Yelling at me, picking fights with me in front of our daughter. He would constantly sneak out and get more alcohol, and would cheat on me. Living like that is not ok. I am now finally divorced, and he is in jail for 4 DUI charges. It still hurts, but I know i did the right thing.

“If parents are spending more on lawyers than family counseling, they have it backwards!”
This is exactly what my wife is doing to me. Not a penny spent on counseling, but she went straight to a lawyer and served me with separation papers and then a divorce after our house was sold. Still no counseling has been attempted. She has been doing it all backwards. It’s super sad for our 5 children. I am powerless to protect them as a man.

Wow, this TEDx talk really sheds light on the often overlooked aspects of divorce. Stu Weintraub's insights into the true costs, both emotional and financial, are eye-opening. It's essential for society to have more open conversations about the challenges and consequences of divorce to better support individuals going through it. Highly thought-provoking!

its just another thing wrong about the legal system, divorces shouldnt be this messy or this costly or this emotionally draining

Stellar video by Stu Weintraub. This video epitomizes the trauma that divorce actually is. It also posits a better path forward. The legal industry has a vested interest in keeping divorce traumatic and profitable. The courts are all about the money as this video notes.

Time and energy are two of the non-monetary resources that can be eaten up by divorce.

wow, what an Excellent video on divorce. Most parents Never think about how it impacts their children they only care about their own happiness. I like the thought of having clergy and/or counseling before or at the beginning of the marriage to hopefully save the marriage.

As a child of divorce and a parent who also divorced, this message is crucial, crucial for our next generation!

Good message. Divorces need to be civil and always remember how the negative actions can impact your children.

Well said, Stuart! As a therapist who has witness countless children caught in the crossfires of their parents divorce, it never occurred to me that there might be a more feasible solution. After all, people of means generate pre-nuptials where there is an agreement that says that in the event the marriage does not work out, the terms are already set. In this case, what is being protected is not money or property but are far more precious asset, our children.

Yep. Our culture cares more about financial assets than the priceless human ones. Until now. Thanks for commenting

I can relate to separation/divorce. My parents separated but didn't divorce when I was a child. My father went onto have an affair and my half sister was a result of the affair. They eventually got back together like nothing ever happened.

I wish I would have went to counceling for my first marriage. People need to think about their children. This is really something to think about. People need to think about their kids when thinking about divorce.
