  • On this episode, Seth is joined in the studio by Assistant Director of Engineering, Joe Thielen and Marketing Director Neil Davies. The topic of this show is all things V-Max bullets. The V-Max was released as a new product in 1996 and quickly established itself as the best varmint hunting bullet on the market. The team discusses the design aspects of this bullet along with what applications are best suited for the V-Max.

    We run 30" barreled 7 Twist 223 Rem's with the 80gr ELDM's (loaded long at 2.490" COAL) comfortably @ 3,000fps for Prairie Dogs & Coyotes.
    Put THAT in your app and compare it to ANYTHING mentioned in this podcast. The only thing mentioned in this podcast that can outperform our Prairie Dog Load is the 22 Creed with the same 80gr ELDM. But you're using DOUBLE the powder and have about 1/4 to 1/3 of the barrel life. Not worth it to me.
    The ELDM's blow up just like a VMAX. Especially because of the retained velocity, as a high BC bullet.
    My second rifle (for when the first one gets hot) is a 243 Winchester with a 87gr VMAX @ 3350fps. That combo will hang with the 80 ELDM for retained velocity out to 650yds but NOT WIND DRIFT and it's not close. The 87gr starting at 3350 will ALWAYS get pushed around more then the 80gr ELDM starting at 3000, at ALL ranges.

    Great Podcast. You answered alot of my questions. Alittle over a year ago my nieghbor called and said a cougar is going to kill your 2 week old calf, so I grabbed the nearest weapon to me, ran out to my back yard and sure enough the cougar was climbing over my fence heading to the calf, so I hit him in the ribs 2 times at about 120 yards before he turned from the calf to runing at me. That was a great opportunity to work over his chest in front. At about 25 yards from me he turned broadside, so I worked his ribs over some more. He ran another 85 plus yards and climbed over 2 fences before going down. I shot 23 rounds and think I hit 20 times. I had an ar-15 16" barrel 55 grain hornady v maxs. 1 round hit him in the spine right between the shoulder blades as he was climbing over the fence and he still ran another 40 yards. I was pretty sure the bullets were expanding to fast on this 150 plus lb male cougar. If I were 8 secounds later that calf wouldn't have survived. You have to use what you can get your hands on at the time things go down.

      @@ChipsPlace1952 I bagged my first ever deer this season and it performed very well. It was a short-range engagement (125 yrds), entry on the right side just in front of the shoulder, went between 2 ribs, took out both lungs, vaporized the heart and broke 3 ribs on the way out. The deer dropped where she stood, kicked once and blew blood out her mouth and that was it. I was using the Hornady 103 gr ELD-X Precision Hunter load. I would think it would work great on yokes, its a laser beam, I zero at 200m and its a 1-1/4" high at 100 yards and about 2-1/2" low at 350 yards. I want a little heavier bullet in .264 diameter in the 105 to 110 gr range. You make multiple choices for others and I am limited in what is a very popular diameter being a .264 with just one weight. In that weight give me high BC like you did with 53gr vmax for the .224 diameter and the .4 bc for the 87gr .243. The other reason I would think since the leade to lands is quite long in the 6.5 Creedmore better accuracy can be achieved with a heavier bullets. I am not talking about adequate accuracy I am talking about pinpoint accuracy. Another point is as with many of my varmint loads equal or bests target loads. I would rather load one bullet for both. Just my 2 cents worth.

      What barrel length is that Bear Creek? I'd like to work up a load that gives the same velocity with a 16" or 12.5".308. It's crazy how well these 110gr VMAX bullets work, even at less than 2000 fps with .300 blk.

    Built a .223 off a Remington 700 SPS Varmint with a 26 in. Barrel. Put it in a Stocky's M-50 Black with gray web, aluminum bed, stuck on a Timney Elite Hunter at about 1.5-2 lbs, and topped with a Vortex 6-24X50. Started with loading V-Max 55 gr. Flat base over 748 and BL-(c)2 and really never did any further load work. 3 shots went into .894 at 200 yards. 5 shots went into 1.102 at 200 yards. so I have a little to improve on, but not much. Rifle shoots the V-max, so far, better than the Nosler BT Varmints in the same weight. A lighter, strictly target trigger and the groups may have even been smaller. I built a Savage Pre-accutrigger FP action .222 with an 8 inch twist, 24 inch magnum contour barrel Timney trigger. Ordered some 60 gr. V-Max for that. Can't wait to break it in. Due to the twist I probably wont go below 55 grain bullets with that.

    I used a 110gr VMax in a mid velocity (~2200fps) load from a 300Blk to take a 140lbs Florida whitetail this year. The shot was about 25 yards quartering away, the round smurfed the liver and perfed both lungs and the heart. He went 10 yards, dropped, kicked twice and was DRT. Wouldn't try that at 308 velocities but works exceptionally well at 300Blk velocities.

    I loved the Prairie Dog hunting to golf compairison. My brother and I shot P.dogs out to 295yds with 17HMR and its quit fun. The 53 grain vmax is the only Vmax I dont get on my soap box and preach the goodness about. I have loaded it in .223 and 22 nosler with mixed results. Using CFE223 it is in tune in 90+ degree days (thats the temperatures its tuned in) but in cold weather when the CFE slows about 120fps, it comes out of tune. The 52 grn ELDm does great in all conditions wiith just as good of impacts and just a little more wind drift. 75 grn Vmax in the AR15 chambered for 243WSSM at 3650fps and 350+ lbs pigs drop like a sack of potatoes. Who would have thought.

    A friend bought a bunch of 110 VMax “blems” for me. They look just like the ones I bought in a store. Are they rejected because of minor quality tolerances or factory overruns? I’m using for 300 BLK.

    The most accurate hunting load of any type I've ever shot is 60 Gr V-max using 25 grains of Varget. Insane, stupid accurate in every 223 or 5.56 gun I own. My standard for coyotes, or eggs at 300 yards.

    • @CB-di2zp
      @CB-di2zp ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From my PERSONAL experience, the answer is No. Your mileage may vary. .223 loaded 26.0gr target with 60gr VMAX with a medium factory crimp. 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards out of an 18in 1:8 twist AR. I hadn't loaded any varmint rounds for a while and misplaced my recipe so pulled one of my rounds apart to reverse engineer. Bullet was deformed from the crimp but my groups didn't care.
