    Hey Shaun, great piece of furniture!! Here's a crazy idea... if you make this table double the wide you could make a fortune selling it to hipster restaurants, as they could accommodate parties or 2, 4, 6 people depending on how they slide the middle pieces. Hold on, just realized that is probably not a thing in the US (i.e. strangers sharing the same table). Would definitely work over Japan and here in Europe though. Let me know if decide to give it a go!

    Very nice Shaun. Thanks. I'm working on a piece (a speaking podium) made of Brazilian walnut (embuya) and hadn't decided how to join the top to the leg. It worried me that the joint might ruin the piece. You gave me the answer. Your stuff is really good. I'v seen most of your content, all of the recent. Although your craftsmanship is evident it's notable how the quality of your content has improved so much. Of the things I look forward to that I enjoy very much is your stuff. Be well, good waves and fair winds. I tell you this because I have learned it's important to tell people how their life makes mine better. Blessings

    Shauny...can we call you Shauny? (I mean you called yourself that...but then I call myself things I wouldn't want others to call me) I feel your pain with having a SawStop and no dado blades. I just never think it's going to be worth changing out the brake and blades so I don't even bother. I picked up an old Craftsman tablesaw that I think I'm going to take the base off of and mount in the back of a new outfeed table that I will permanently put a dado stack in. Not sure if you could do that with your current table because Greg looks to be in the way. Way to go, Greg. Anyway, this is another great build, I really dig it. You are the good kind of crazy. An idea on the stretcher sides, coulld you have put a tenon/key... maybe even dovetail key eh? sticking out from the table sides and then route slots the ends of the stretcher so it slides down into it... maybe the hidden sliding dovetails in the dovetail table is appropriate ;-)

    Very interesting design and a clever idea that I might incorporate in some of my projects.
    I may be wrong (I hope) but I'm a bit unsure about that continuous grain since the overhang from the stretcher is parallel with the grain thus making it a weak spot. Also the sliding dovetail might change by wood movement making it too slack or impossible to slide.
    By having pieces perpendicular to the stretcher would eliminate both problems but wouldn't look as good.
    Form over function or vise versa.

      Thanks, really appreciate it! I thought about all of that, but was worried that if I had perpendicular grain directions on the sliding parts, and my center alder section expanded/contracted differently from the walnut parts they might become tight/loose over time. With parallel grain direction they should expand and contract similarly throughout the seasons (hopefully). We will see how it goes, I will definitely keep my eye on it.

    Really cool and interesting design. I love the idea of leaving it moving. As you were putting in the stretcher, I had a thought. You could put a domino in either side of the leg, then just cut a slot through the ends of the stretcher. It would be hidden in the underside of the table but would give you the additional strength of the side tenons.

    • @shaunboydmadethis
      @shaunboydmadethis  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is funny, I had the exact same conversation about the stretcher with Jonathan Katz-Moses. I almost did it like that, but decided the bit of extra strength wasn't worth the extra time. Good thinking, though!
