The more cardiacs songs i listen to, the more i appreciate Jim. Absolute legend. I mean Tim is the obvious genius but Jim is there with him all the way.
New fan here: adding to list of greats - Zappa, Mr. Bungle, Hillage, Fred Frith, KCrimson, Genesis, Killing Joke. REFRUCKINGFRESHING! I love these guys!
Christ, the Pixies were great and the Cardiacs are great, end of story. This is a fantastic track and all you indie kids out there should watch and learn. By the way, get well soon Mr Smith, thousands are rooting for ya!
this is the sound that them there Pixies were trying to emmulate........and they did, almost......but this track is simply unsurpasssssable. Peace be with you Tim Smith. xx
I never saw this on TV- but if I did, and didn't know this band, I'd have been blown away/ curious, and want to look up more, to then find their glorious musical history. Like nothing else. If you've never divulged, now is you're chance. As ever, my thoughts go out to Tim the genius of Cardiacs. Please recover mate. You are always worthy of laudation. Peace and love, man.
@FrankTownsend A true alternative music fan would want an alternative to "alternative" music. Thank god for Cardiacs. They are the alternative that alternative music needs!!!
Help me !, I can't get this song out of my head, it kicks the shit outta the Pixies, Smashing Pumpkins etc .... Cardiacs get into your head and NEVER leave !!!. Hi's to All the MySpace Lesbian Chatroom girls, Chauncey, Raven, Franno, Ruca .. I love you all .x x x .
Sorry, y'all. I'm a fucking yank who had the privilege of meeting both Cardiacs and Pixies's first album engineer Steve Albini before the end of 1986. CARDIACS CAME FIRST. Anybody who hears Pixies influence in CARDIACS is just hearing what they are able to hear. Pixies weren't even in the conversation up to "Tarred and Feathered" and "Is This The Life." Just not even known. Pixies come WAY LATER. Deal with it.
Cardiacs just play tunes that make their stomachs feel funny, I doubt they much care who's being influence by who, i know i certainly don't, what wonderful flowery music.
Often wondered if Morrisey named his band 'The Smiths' after this band as their are 3 Smiths in the line up. I suppose the Cardiacs could have called themeselves 'The Smiths' without copyright infringement because that is their real name. Imagine a bunch of Smiths fans turning up and getting the Cardiacs instead. I think they would like it anyway.
@jibberandtwitch -they know well their influences. And they care about them. At least cared enough to talk passionately about them all in 1986. But I doubt if they care if you know what they know.
I agree that the Cardiacs are awesome and Tim Smith is a genius but I wouldn't denegrate the pixies as "a fairly normal good-quality rock band". It's hard to compare but The Cardiacs stand alone whereas the pixies influenced many great bands - take your pick but any true alternative music fan should love at least 1 or both!!
Edit: *I was wrong* . This is now just context for the discussion that followed. The presenter seems to have a bit of a superficiality problem? Or is the most important thing about a band what they wear? I suppose he's entitled to his opinion, even if it's horribly wrong, but am I the only one who detects a certain hostility toward "Kingston's weirdest", vented in a manner entirely unworthy of laudation? I have a suspicion that the presenter's contributions have been kept here, mainly because he's given himself enough rope to hang himself, and it's up to us to encourage him to get on with it. Until someone convinces me I'm seeing ghosts, he gets a little piece of my scorn every time I visit here.
@Cody Castleberry Sorry. Missed your response to this, somehow. Maybe he was just trying to be witty, I suppose. Not a terribly good example of British humour if he was. Back in the day, there was quite a bit of hostility toward the band from the self-appointed arbiters of taste, so I'm not so sure if humour would explain it. We're both speculating, I suppose, so we'll just have to wait a few years for someone with inside information to step up and set things straight. Edit: OK, sorry to the presenter. I've just had a look at the full show upload, and it's clear from that there's the opposite of hostility. This isn't someone complaining about having to announce a band he doesn't like; it's probably someone who instead traded some favours to get them on the show (or something positive like that). You're probably right, Cody.
Love your prose, and I hope you're well --- I know I'm commenting many years after the fact, but you'll be saddened to know that the presenter, Kevin Greening, passed in 2007. He was most definitely in Cardiacs'(or is it "the" Cardiacs') corner.
planet gong came soon after cardiacs formed, they all hung out together, cardiacs didnt become known until 78/9 but gong knew them and gong had gone stale before that, camembert was their last great album before planet gong
agree most of the cardiacs influences come from late 60s,early 70s like gong, gentle giant, bowie ,vdgg, scar bands, peter hammill etc just like most of todays good bands, the pixies are good but more of a pop band
I can see where you are coming from, but, I might argue that cardiacs/pixies come from different schools of musical thought (albeit both on the avant guard fringe). I think the pixies have a more organic approach, if you will, and I doubt that there was any conscious or cultural influence going on here. But hey, what do I know?
only only thing stands out as something i wouldn't personally endorse, guitarist wow ! lyrics fantastic...but ermm excuse me..Pixies ? after not before, the Pixies, Gong and a few other bands have claimed inspiration from this amazing band...brilliant , fantastic band..
vindaloo embraces patriotism. just being proud to be english. no facist overtones. every other nation on earth is proud to be but only the english get stick. it's not a contradiction to be a patriot and a liberal.
"The Cardiacs"
What a punter.
The more cardiacs songs i listen to, the more i appreciate Jim. Absolute legend. I mean Tim is the obvious genius but Jim is there with him all the way.
I've only just realized how mind bending and beautiful this songs is, it is very mind bending and beautiful.
New fan here: adding to list of greats - Zappa, Mr. Bungle, Hillage, Fred Frith, KCrimson, Genesis, Killing Joke. REFRUCKINGFRESHING! I love these guys!
Mr. Bungle? Get out of here!!
Christ, the Pixies were great and the Cardiacs are great, end of story.
This is a fantastic track and all you indie kids out there should watch and learn.

This always makes me tear up a bit.

I think Blur liked them too. Whenever Damon was actually allowed to play his circus tent songs on the keyboard it sounded a bit Cardiacsy.
There will never be another Tim Smith.
My favourite Cardiacs track
❤❤❤
WE HEART TIM FOUR EVER
The bass is smooth as hell in this!
oooh you sure? not one of Jim's finest moments - or is there an air of sarcasm here?
No sarcasm intended. I love how the bass is cranked up!
The bass is quite good.
It’s Jim, that’s the main thing.
I never saw this on TV- but if I did, and didn't know this band, I'd have been blown away/ curious, and want to look up more, to then find their glorious musical history. Like nothing else. Anyone here 2020? Such joy!!!

Get well Tim, we need ya!
Когда у мер мой отец я слушала ее😢, это было мое душевное состояние. .. И сейчас вспоминаю, крик души.
So wish I'd managed to catch the Cardiacs Live...
@FrankTownsend A true alternative music fan would want an alternative to "alternative" music. Thank god for Cardiacs. They are the alternative that alternative music needs!!!
RIP Tim Smith 😢
Every fan shouts, ' No, not THE Cardiacs! Cardiacs. No article.' But I guess that's all part of the wheeze.
Wonderful

Who’s watching in lockdown 2020
Best song the Pixies never made

I agree 100% !

They predate the Pixies by a considerable amount of time.
@jibberandtwitch -they know well their influences. And they care about them. At least cared enough to talk passionately about them all in 1986. But I doubt if they care if you know what they know.

Pixies are highly overrated. This the real deal. Bl Frank should forward all royalties..

@@bloodnchocolate I'm sorry to hear that. He would've be too young to die back then (by a long way). Anyway, thanks.
planet gong came soon after cardiacs formed, they all hung out together, cardiacs didnt become known until 78/9 but gong knew them and gong had gone stale before that, camembert was their last great album before planet gong
And Kavus Torabi who was involved with Cardiacs mid 90's and joined in 2003 is now lead singer with Gong reformed 😮
I don't see anything weird, just genius
We're not worthy.

@mrprogrock1 - I mean, yeah. but you didn't mention Genesis or Sex Pistols and most of the rest of it.
only only thing stands out as something i wouldn't personally endorse, guitarist wow ! lyrics fantastic...but ermm excuse me..Pixies ? after not before, the Pixies, Gong and a few other bands have claimed inspiration from this amazing band...brilliant , fantastic band..
I'm pretty sure Kavus Torabi played in Gong who was actually a member of late-Cardiacs
@GuyfromScotland And dont forget Richard D James!
back, hairs, neck (not necessarily in that order)
@GuyfromScotland And don´t forget Zappa

@pressgangers - zero. How much do the Sex Pistols owe to Green Day? Same. Zero.
Where has it gone? Bring it back :o( Bloody Nazis ;oP
Please get better

Contrary to what you may think, you haven't got a clue what you're talking about.
