I recently finished my NES toploader RGB mod and I totally agree that none of the guides out there were complete, it took a lot of research to get everything working, especially the audio. The community really needed a complete guide, thanks Steve!

Thanks Nick! It's kind of crazy too because this is an old mod at this point.

Great Video, Retro Tech! One additional step I took with mine is that I went to Home Depot and color matched the light grey to paint the 3d print so it looks close to stock.

I was going to do this years ago but decided the comb filter on my bvm worked well enough with the front loader. Still might be a good project to do someday; soldering is a pretty fun hobby.

If you want to get the most out of your mod, check into the borti nesrgb-igr add on board. It lets you change the color pallette with button presses on the controller instead of having to do a physical switch, as well as hard and soft resets from the controller. This feature alone is amazing when used in conjunction with flash carts.

This doesnt look too bad. The main thing would be desoldering/pulling that ppu off. I think the desoldering gun is almost a must. I will probably try this on my toploader when I get a desoldering gun.

At 7:40, you mention being able to use any SNES cable (for instance, I am using Retro-access's cable retro-access.com/collections/super-nintendo/products/snes-csync-bnc-and-rca-cable-pro-coaxial-multicore-for-pvm-monitor) but I read in one of the possible outdated guides on Tim's website that you could only use it if you removed the inline resistors or something like that. Also I am unsure whether to use TTL sync or 75 sync. Any ideas?

I did that one about 2 months ago. Did you get a chance to check that video? Also I do offer some modding services like this, but the NES RGB is still pretty darn pricey at the moment. th-cam.com/video/uNWCotfQW8Y/w-d-xo.html

@@RetroTechUSA I must have missed it. Looks like you installed a genesis model 2 style plug. I wonder if its possible to install a nintendo multi out plug instead.

What connector are you using for the rgb? Is it one connector for all inputs or separate ones that happen to all have SNES connectors?

I have done this mod on my japanese AV famicom but im stuck on how to hook it up to a pvm. Did you use bnc break out cables? Im trying to make my own cables and im still unsuccessful. Thanks for the tip about the audio i need to do that on mine too thanks . Keep making great videos.

Really well made and helpful video! This is the exact mod I'm planning to do on my Top Loader (no cut, new back panel with the multi-out).
I noticed that you didn't remove the 2SA937 transistor (normally used for onboard composite video). I've read that removing it is optional, but leaving it can cause video noise or interference with the NESRGB board. Did you notice any of that? Thanks!

Look up eevblog soldering tutorials. It's actually pretty easy, just practice things like soldering and desoldering on some junk electronics. You can get a decent setup for around $50 that will do most things a hobbiest would need.

Would the pinout diagram provided allow for most cables to work? So could I use a S-Video cable with this and then maybe a SCART cable?

Awesome video. I'm getting ready to upgrade my composite modded top loader to RGB and am trying to do as much research as possible. I know there's some unknowns in most of the guides and your video helps.
BTW, there's another way audio for the multiout if you don't want to solder wires directly to the CPU. You can pull the original mono audio from one of the pins the RF modulator was connected to. That is what I did with my composite mod. Check out Retrofixes install guide for his composite amp for details.
