  • Concrete block planter and raised beds sometimes need some help to retain water for plants so grow. Easy to get vegetables OR flowers to grow inside the pavestone, concrete blocks or bricks, works great. Tip that can help if you are having issues growing in blocks.

My mom raises green bean, peas and some flowers in them for years. We are in Ohio. The blocks and tall fence are around the garden. Beans and peas grow on fence and so easy to pick.

I just began following you guys, and I gotta say that I love your channel! It is common sense stuff, but stuff sometimes you don't think about. AND, for those that are struggling financially, you think of ways to still garden mostly for free. I love that!

Was watching you need to paint the insides and out sides of your cider blocks it seals them so they dont absorb the water fill bottom blocks with stone then put a piece of plastic in the bottom of top one and poke a few drainage holes in it then add something on top of plastic like paper towel for moisture retention then add compost and soil and plants . Just imagine all those blocks all different colors also when you get your little knomes check into coating them with a clear sealant that helps them from fading as fast . And I some times hot glue them to rocks to keep them up off the soil and keep the bottoms dryer . Love your channel I'm planning my chair garden for my patio . I live in upper Ohio and in the fall will be emptying the totes of the dead plants and putting the lids on the totes and stacking them soil and all in my garden shed and stacking the chairs in the shed . The dead plant matter will go in my compost barrel for the winter to decompose and go in the totes in the spring when I set my chairs and totes back up ... my brother before he passed away was in a wheel chair and he had a huge deck built on his house and used cinder blocks and 2x6 base for his totes and gardened so he could get around with his wheel chair... but your chairs are idea for me cause they can all be stacked and stored away for winter and way cheaper than blocks and lumber. Plus lighter to lug around I'm 66 and lugging blocks and lumber would be to much for my back.... thankyou so much for all the handy ideas ....

Perfect timing. I'm using cement blocks as a wall for my watermelons and cantaloupes and I wanted to plant something in the blocks so I will try this method. Tfs

I just built a mushroom bed using cinder blocks as the frame, and my goal is to grow herbs in each of the cinder block holes! That way I have a 2 in 1 setup with a really small overall footprint. Your video is the only one I could find with good advice on this thank you!

Hello Robbie...I planted lavender beside retaining wall bricks (as suggested by my neighbor) and it is growing well...new baby plant came from the same plant, so I transplanted near the bricks with lots of success last year...

I have found once the roots reach the soil underneath the blocks and get established the plants to quite well. I also plant drought resistant herbs and bulbs. They bulbs seem to love it in the blocks.

I was having an issue so I added cut grass to the blocks around the plants and the grass holds the water and is completely working.

So far weeds grow really well in there 😁. But I do have flowers as well as some creeper plant that seems to love it. For my new block I will try your pot idea though! I mostly fill them with the rock pieces and stones I find while digging.

Hey, Robbie. Home Grown Veg says to put bottle caps in the bottoms of each one when you stack them.

Home Grown Veg stores & stacks his 10 inch pots... with a bottle cap or a small stone between to keep them from fusing together. (thumbs up)

I'm thinking about enclosing my totes with cement blocks to make it esthetically pleasing.if they were painted, How likely is it that would be acceptable?

The bricks she refers to are actually cinder blocks. So do you poke a bunch of holes in the bottom of the pots so the roots can spread beyond the pot? if so how big are the holes and how many?

The problem I have with the blocks is that they siphon out water. I even I used baby diapers.

They are called "Flower Buckets" or Cooler Flower Buckets, free standing buckets for use in coolers and market displays. That is a very good question, as they just call them Floral pots, which the cut flowers come in to their stores and they toss them out, the flower companies do not take them back....They look like these on ebay, but the ones we get have NO holes, which I do make holes....rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?icep_id=114&ipn=icep&toolid=20004&campid=5338267736&mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fitm%2F2-Gallon-Plastic-Pots-Garden-Nursery-Planter-Flower-Vegetable-Plant-10-Pack-Set%2F223187229507%3Fepid%3D1303498393%26hash%3Ditem33f6fedb43%3Ag%3APkQAAOSwiJhbwSfh%20

The chemicals from the blocks will leach into the soil and thereby into the vegetation.

Would it be Lime? I heard of people using vinegar baths to bring higher PH down in homemade Portland cement planters. Perhaps a safe plastic liner could help. Some sort of long black plastic grow bag could fit in deeper below the plant. Or how about a large plastic soda or water bottle upside down below the plant filled with dirt?

    • @lifehappens6447
      @lifehappens6447 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@flbeachinggirl depends on the platic. Most plastic bags are toxic when heated a bit. It would be safer and easier, even cheaper, to go to a florist and ask for the pots they put the flowers in. The black ones, most are food grade/safe plastic. Most florists will give you as many as you want for free.
