Going to try this with my 9 week old golden retriever! I've tried the yelping and walking away method and he just seems to growl chase me and bite/rip at my clothes harder. I've also tried saying a firm no and he barks back, so hopefully this method will work. Do you know how long it takes them to learn not to bite and snap? I know mouthing will probably last until they've finished teething
Every dog is different but stay the course. Yelping can build prey drive and walking away can build it even more! As you will be viewed as a retreating injured creature. Keep a leash on, stay consistent and when you can't train, manage his space. Crate time is great time for puppies.
Okay thankyou. I've been trying what you've said to do in the video but he bites so hard it's difficult to not react sometimes, and sometimes when I try to wait for him to stop, he continues for a while to the point where I'm in a lot of pain. I've also tried distracting/redirecting him as mentioned, but that also doesn't always work. Do you have any other suggestions?
