  • This documentary on the lives of Iraqi civilians after the "First Gulf War" was originally shown on WGBH in Boston.
Shot in Iraq in the fall of 1992, it examines the effects of war and sanctions on average Iraqis. At the time, many Iraqis were hopeful that they might see an eventual improvement in their lives. With Bill Clinton about to enter the White House, many imagined that the U.S. might show more concern for the people of Iraq.
No one anticipated the wholesale destruction, invasion, and occupation of Iraq that would enfold in 2003 under the second Bush presidency.
Produced, directed, and narrated by Signe Taylor. Shot, recorded, & compressed by Randy Graham.
Where are the Iraqis interviewed in the film now? What course have their lives taken? Are they even alive?
A proposed second trip to Iraq in 2004-2005 by the same filmmakers to answer many of these questions could not garner any funding from PBS. Personally, I still hope to return to Iraq someday for a followup documentary on the lives of ordinary people in these tumultuous decades.
Shot with a Sony Hi-8 camcorder.

Western world couldn't really let them be. High ranking UN official once said they knew that sanction wouldn't do anything to hurt saddam. Their did not have a goal .
They couldnt stop after the gulf war. People culture, happiness somehow survived the gulf war but US couldn't leave them alone.
They turned these open, equal society into a oppressed religious regime.
If these people knew what was gonna happen after Saddam. My god.

This is so heartbreaking to watch, I was born in 1992 and for that obvious reason was devoid of the ability to be aware of what was occurring but still, it makes me feel incredibly guilty and frustrated to not have had the ability to do anything about it. However, if I did, I would of gone to great lengths to help relieve the suffering of those innocent families and children who had done nothing to deserve this. It’s so morally and ethically wrong to punish those who are completely powerless over what is happening politically between ours and their government!

The situation in Iraq during the Saddam Hussein regime and afterwards seemed complicated on the one hand the United States embargoed Iraq from all fronts and on the other their government intimidated their own people.

If were talking about the kids I’d say yes, they looked to be around 6 so they’d be around 30, but since the war happened in 2003 most DEFINITELY a huge portion of the kids you saw are now dead.

The sanctions were meant to deplete the morale and resources of a country until the government of that country would give up and surrender to the matter of fact. However, the UN was dealing with a ruthless dictator who he himself engaged in suppressing and killing his own citizens-with chemical weapons sometimes. So in reality, Saddam didn't really care about these Iraqi children, but he made sure to use them as scapegoats to bring the world to ease sanctions on Iraq. This documentary and many others filmed in Iraq between 1991-2002 is proof that he tried to get every foreign journalist to document these crimes against humanity committed against the people of Iraq. If there's hell, I hope that he rot in it for eternity, not only him, but also everyone who watched these documentaries, and knew about the situation in Iraq and was able to do something but didn't do anything.
