Maybe its a mandala effect, bc I was thinking this had something to do with the way they did old portraits, but the new Rhystic Study video had me thinking that all these portrait cards were supposed to be reminiscent of the way they did the portrait of Hurloon Minotaur. Its an iconic card, stoic face turned slightly to the left with a solid color background. I like them.
The word you were looking for at 3:15 was Homogenized. That dom united liliana was such a downgrade to dark mistress lily. Had to skip the dom remastered print of exploration because the art looks stolen from a low effort young adult fantasy fanfic.
google abstract art/abstract realism. large majority of old MTG cards have this art style and it's beloved. (stasis for example which is even more abstract than some of these)
I kinda like the realistic bird art, the others are a bit of a miss lol. They should have doubled down on the 'photo-real' anthropomorphic portraits.
I actually really like these arts. Realistic birds for humanoid bird wizards is hilarious lol

I thought the current lore of liliana is that the deal was off now that all 4 demonlords were killed, and liliana had been intended to die, ending the contract when gideon took the death punishment instead, ergo now she gets older
LOTR magic is a good example of great and terrible art combinations. Why don't people in the same family have similar skin color? Why aren't the Orcs black. We all know but it breaks the lore and art.
100% agree, this art direction made me skip buying collector boosters for both commander masters and MH3.
It used to be unique to the artist, and now the artwork looks homogenized and anticipated. Mark Tedin, Quinton Hoover, and Richard Kane Ferguson were the OG masters. Take away the computers bring back the brush! The "Magic" the cards held was the depiction of the meaning of the card within the parameters of the medium.
stasis. your entire argument is false, old mtg is riddled with cards with both abstract and abstract/realism(also these are all from MASTERS sets idk if you all noticed, hence the side profile theme being similar it's almost like they idk went with a theme for masters sets or something)
I'll concede that Kozilek looked super dumb. But those birds are both my taste. I guess that's the thing, it's all about taste and style. I must say though, this is an odd style to have introduced to MTG, but I think it really highlights the commander itself more. Swing and a miss!
The profile shot cards are a massive miss for me for two big reasons. If the character is going to be so pulled in, why keep the art so flat and cartoony, and the unsaturated, random, pastel colored backgrounds are obnoxious to look at. Bloomburrow looks really great as a whole though, especially those beautiful water colored pieces.
imo the Gorillaz - Dog Days-esque art has run its course, its fine every once in a while but it gets old after a while. I agree that it is inherently lazy, since it's just a profile shot of a character/creature

Ed I agree with you . The art was one of the big factors. The human touch is gone.
They are reprinting cards with some booba using new art. Kemba from scars got new artwork. Nirkana's revenant also got new one. But that is not the real problem. Real problem is that new artwork often looks more like cartoon than fantasy world. Faces are so cartoony. Color palatte for character and background is often the same making 1 mess instead of characters popping up. Art often lack details. Compare new phyrexia to one phyrexia. Look at silly constructs in brothers war. Compare that to scars of mirrodin or original mirrodin. Back in the day (hate to say that phrase) artifacts looked like something you wouldn't touch. Now they look like you found them in happy meal at McDonalds.
Worse are all the digital art action hero cards, these are the ones that all look the same and are probably soon to be AI generated. Maybe they already do use AI for some of them and will then come out wirh "you didn't mind before you knew and haven't even noticed, so..."

Think you are confusing art and design, the artistic abilities of current fantasy artists are way better than before. The art direction team at wotc on the other than is just throw shit at the wall

Those portraits don't do it for me either. I like borderless and extended art cards, but not every rare and mythic needs one lol
All magics artwork today is the same. It's bland boring unoriginal uninspired safe censored there's no individuality in any of the artworks in magic anymore.
Dominik Mayer is one of the few artists doing something unique these days, you can actually pick his artwork out from the masses. Like the original artists 🍻

I agree… it’s become lazy. My guess is that they are rushing with all these sets they are dropping all the time. I’m sure the artists don’t always have time to produce a masterpiece
