    His voice is so warm and tender. You can hear the hurt in his voice and his eyes tearing up knowing he will never see her again. Brilliant acting. He wants to stay and she wants him to stay. Her tears in the end show him she loved him too.......

    I Agree with the lady after me. No Need for physical intimacy. One has to go much deeper than that. The Stares , the expressions. The Gentle movements. Says it all. Much better than sex. It goes way beyond. What did he say about the Sea ? Such beautiful Poetry. And so True about who She Was. The Best Movie I've ever seen. Thought the Thorn birds were really good. But than I saw this. Don't forget, this was War time. I think this happened much more than we Realize. Thank you for this Awesome movie. Makes me Cry every time.

      This longing we get when we are in love, is the LOVE frequency. Romantic love is only one of many ways to tapping into this LOVE frequency. Even though the love frequency is everywhere, right with us, yet we have forgotten how to tap into it. There are also other ways to tap into it, like prayer, meditation, service to others, mindfulness, all require conscious diligence to practice (ask anyone who maintains a spiritual practice). Romantic love is one experience most everyone will have a chance to have in the course of one's life, it is effortless for most. That is why we only recognize it a romantic, not the universal frequency that is. We need to rediscover what LOVE really is....

      @katarmor, I am speechless, what a terrible wound your mom has to bear all these years. I was thinking, now Werner is gone, Pascal might prey on Jeanne again. What an interesting contrast, the officer of the occupation shows impeccable code of conduct, a true gentleman, the cousin, Jeanne's own relative, behaves like a thug...

    • @leiyang477
      @leiyang477 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@vivianedelage2504 How ironic, that the occupying force came to France with guns and tanks, but they also brought love on an individual level, knowing how many love stories have ensued during the four years of the occupation. The world is a brutal but also wondrous place, full of paradoxes, opportunities for souls to be creative, to make the best out of the worst. It really makes one think again about the intentions of the so called Collaborators, even during occupation, some one has to administer to the needs of the population, especially in large cities, towns, to minimize suffering, to maintain order. I think we are poised on massive disclosures of the many truth about the two great wars. Our history has not been honestly written.

    C'est le plus beau film que j'ai jamais vu ! Les acteurs excellent chacun dans leur role. C'est à travers le silence que s'est imposée la famille jusqu'a la fin,ou presque, que l'on ressent la force incroyable des sentiments du capitaine allemand comme de la jeune fille ! A vrai dire j'avais peur que le film n'égale pas le livre, mais cette representation cinématographique du chef d'oeuvre de Vercors a dépassé toutes mes attentes ! Merci beaucoup pour ce film ! Ce téléfilm est vraiment très beau. J’avais vu le version avec Howard Vernon peut-être plus fidèle au livre de Vercors. Mais je préfère la plus récente avec des acteurs formidables. Comment ne pas craquer sur le beau regard de ces deux êtres déchirés par cette guerre. J’ai pleuré à la fin.

    So beautiful 💞...the ending so sad.....I've watched it 11 times up to now but... It stays in your mind and you must think 🤔 a lot about it, all the metaphors and especially, the ending. True love in these times, the fate of two nations between them, they couldn't manage that...especially she was really patriotic (but he respected it) as the very end shows. But, so tragic😭

    • @alexandrabrockmeyer3122
      @alexandrabrockmeyer3122 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      But can someone please explain that special kind of sad ending to me?? 🤔 She cries a lot because he is leaving, one word full of love 'Adieu", and then? 😯 She joins actively the resistance and is the happiest person in the world or what?? So, what' s the meaning of the very end? 🤔 Help, please🙏🏻

    • @pangorban1
      @pangorban1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@alexandrabrockmeyer3122 Yes. I found the ending strange. Despite her love for Werner, and despite the horrors of the bomb attack on her own family grounds by people she thought were her friends, and could have resulted in her and her grandfather's execution or being sent to a camp, she goes off to join the Resistance.
      I think the film tried to stay true to the original novel, which was a call to resistance against the German occupier. However, unlike the novel and the 1949 film version, this film veered off into a love story, so that made the ending harder to understand.
      I suppose they explained that away with Werner's statement that one has to stay loyal to one's duty and commitments.

    • @alexandrabrockmeyer3122
      @alexandrabrockmeyer3122 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pangorban1 yeah, I already thought about Werner's sentence he explained to stay loyal to one's duties and so on... He gave the answer as to the ending, but did you or someone else notice, that there are red roses 🌹or maybe red cloves on her dress at the very end!? 🤔 I mean, come on that film is ful of metaphors... I'm pretty sure it has a meaning, too

      @@alexandrabrockmeyer3122 The lilac flowers in the courtyard showed it to be spring. So she was wearing a pretty floral dress, as opposed to the drab grey colours she wore during winter. It was hard to tell if they were roses or not. The dress didn't appear to be one of Jeanne's mother's hand-me-downs, so perhaps she was finally moving on from the past.
      So much of the commentary about this film indicates that Jeanne and Werner were destiny's soul mates. But life's not like that. People fall in love, and if it doesn't work out, they move on. Jeanne was too practical a person to pine away for Werner. If he wanted to kill himself by transferring to the Russian Front, that was his business. She had an occupation to overthrow. That was her business.

    • @leiyang477
      @leiyang477 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@alexandrabrockmeyer3122 When he returned home with his old friends and fellow German officers, they had an argument about Germany vanquished France, therefore they should be proud victors, and they were no longer poets and musicians(Werner was a Classical composer and pianist, one of his friend was a poet, who turned into an ardent National Socialist, whereas Werner seems more of a humanist)," the officer friend went on to say "(to hell with) respect France, they were German officers and should be loyal to their duty and the Fuhrer." Werner turned in exasperation: "Yeah right!" and walk back to the house. When he got inside he walked in the sitting room and wanted to tell the hosts "something serious", about his disillusion of the German Government's policy towards Occupied France, he ended up asking:"what should I do? Maybe you are right (refering to Jeanne), we should honor our duty and commitment." So after the car bomb killed his fellow officers, he might have arranged to have Jeanne and her grandpa interrogated by the SS who would certainly suspect that Jeanne might know about the bomb (and saved Werner), because the Germans are known for being punctual, the fact that Werner did not get in the car while his orderly and the two friend officers were in the car, is itself suspect. I think Werner requested to go to the Russian Front immediately with the intention (my guess here) to not be part of the investigation of the bombing assassination, remember Grandpa read the newspaper about the assassination of the two German officers brought about the reprisal of killing 99 French hostages. Werner was very scared for Jeanne I think (that scene of him walking out of the German command center and saw Jeanne from afar, and the grave look in his face and eyes). He got in the car and looked at her while driving away.

    HELLO from Toronto Canada!!!!!!!! We are currently in Lockdown so I've been trying to watch a lot of movies and TV series that I have never had time to watch. I started with Suite Française (2014), then The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (2018) then The Exception (2016) then I found this incredible Foreign film! OMG the best of the best- so much better then anything Hollywood could produce! I fell in love with with Jeanne & Werner- so raw and incredible!!!! At first I was heartbroken with the ending- I wanted more but after watching it again I understood better {I also had to do a little research ;)}. For French women to have a relationship with a German Solider would result in shame - some would have their heads shaved following liberation, as punishment for an on-going relationship with a Nazi soldier during the occupation of France. This relationship between Jeanne & Werner was doomed but at least he left knowing that she loved him and he was loved! Flood of tears!

    This movie is haunting in that it keeps you wanting more for both of them. It wasn’t possible unless she was willing to become involved with him and that was looked upon as criminal.. Her own people would have turned against her. By the end of the occupation, those women were persecuted without mercy.
    None of these events occurred in the original story but the message was that you could resist by simply not engaging with the enemy.

      Sharyn Carr all of my relatives are German and I know from correspondence that all the men were forced to fight even though they hated Hitler and the Nazi regime. Most died fighting the Russians, some hoped to surrender to the Americans and some survived. War is horrible. It never brings peace, only suffering.
      This film was beautifully done.

      Heidi Grover, I totally agree with you. The German Captain came from a military family and he had no choice but to do his duty. When he realized that the defeated people were not going to be respected and seen as worthy, his disillusionment was overwhelming. He couldn’t leave the military, he would have been tried as a deserter so he volunteered for the Russian front and he would accept whatever fate held for him. Most likely he faced death in combat or a Russian prison camp, if lucky he might survive. He was a better man than he knew, as were many others in Germany who were caught in a difficult situation.

      Shayn not everyone could have resisted his manners and his genteel ways. Problem one needs to focus on whether he was doing this deliberately or was he genuine. She learned by hearing the discussion between his friends and him and how he stood up for the French people on not humiliating them. She realized he loved France as much as his country but had to make a commitment to his country which was first.
