Every single in-ground tomato bed(and 1 of my raised beds) had HORRIBLE blossom end rot. Lost 20 plants...seriously..close to zero tomatoes. All indeterminate. And my determinates are producing, buy struggling so much with disease AND ber now. 🤦♀️ I watered the same as I always do...and sprayed with calcium multiple times, so I truly think the new compost I used is causing the issue. 😭
This was the first year I grew my zucchini and summer squash "up" . I saw a video where the gardener used 4 plant stakes and made a "square"with them, and then pruned the lower leaves as they grow. The squashes then grow inside that square of stakes ⬆️ up. Absolutely fabulous.
Yellowjackets help you in the garden. They fertilize your veggies. Only in august they don't get sweets from the larves in the nest anymore, then they search for it when you have limonade outside. So: don't eat or drink sweets outside and put a place with old fruit in a corner of the garden, then they will not search for it at your table. Be good 👋
I almost always let a few carrots and parsley go to seed throughout my garden. The odd-ball pollinators just love them! I enjoy seeing all the little “buzzers” zipping around. Sooo much life in the garden! 😁
Great Tip Malissa on trellising the squash. I started doing that just because I don't have the space for them to wonder. I train both butternut and acorn. Though you will need to support the fruit, because the stems will break. I use onion, orange bags that are mesh like,and twist ties to secure to the trellis.
FYI you look adorable with your hair up. Lol, yes I am taking your channel VERY seriously, and watch all the time, but everyone can use a compliment once in a while!
Oh mygoodness! I've been watching other channels for more than a year & I've learned "some"; however, by watching only 2 of your videos (how to save seeds & this one), I've have learned a lot from you!!!!! There are channels for everybody & we have the freedom to be able to choose, so I prefer the ones that have more educational content than 95% of what their family members do every single day. Nothing wrong with that but it's not for me. Thank you for making it so easy to understand, teaching us the do & don'ts of gardening for novice like myself. I'm on disability income but when I save enough money, I'll buy your book for sure!!! I want to cure my illnesses by eating cleaner food. Agree with you about channels that have become centered on family dynamics, new land purchase, building the house...when all I wanted was info on how to grow tomatoes. Thankfully there are many channels that have stayed with their mission and provide straightforward, useful info on gardening/food preservation. Melissa does that, as well as the more mature gardeners who keep their focus. Can't stand rambling.

First yr doing my cukes on a trellis. We also thin the leaves out for more airflow at the base of plant near the dirt. I also leave my carrots in the ground from the second planting, layer 6” of straw on top and I harvest fresh carrots as needed throughout the winter. They won’t grow in the winter so hey need to be mature before the frost. They kept very well here in southern Puget Sound. I had only a handful left at the time spring rolled around and planted my next crop. I also noticed my peach tree fruit isn’t anywhere near ready. I’m generally canning peaches in mid-August. Our cool spring is the culprit I believe. They are still about a month behind. BTW…absolutely love your hair up. Beautiful. 🥰
You just reminded me that I need to go prune tomatoes and zucchini. We’re in the Olympia WA area, and our gardens are finally taking off too. This season was wonky, even for Washington 😂

Thank you so much Melissa! I have a small raised garden and am learning so much. Mainly I am doing tomatoes, cucumbers in raised beds, hot peppers strawberries, and bell peppers in pots. We use soaker hoses in the raised beds and I appreciate the info on the blossom end rot. I got so tickled at you munching on the blueberries! I remember picking blackberries as a little girl and that will be the next thing I plant is a berry bush! Great video!
Can the high temps also affect the butternut squash similar to the beans? I cannot figure out why they are drying up after the flower, it looks like they are going to do well only to be dried the next day.
My baby butternut were literally cooking from sun and heat of the heat wave and drought we've been in. As i trained some of the butternut along my fence, i covered the vine w floating row cover to shield them from the sun. The baby squash are surviving. I then uncover them at night so morning bees can pollinate, or i pollinate by hand, then cover them again before they are exposed to the hot sun.
Those beans look so good! Battling blossom end rot here. Am trying whey in the water to help with the calcium. I've been picking blueberries at a local organic farm, we can the juice for kombucha in the winter.
Blossom end rot is actually caused by the plant not having enough water to distribute the calcium from the roots to the fruit. Most soils have plenty of calcium available, so unless a soil test shows that you actually DO have a calcium deficiency, you just need to make sure that you're giving the plant enough water to prevent blossom end rot.
@@inelouw Installed a drip system early this summer, so they are getting plenty of water as far as I know, which is why I assumed it was a lack of calcium.
Great Tips As Usual. Question : do you have (or may I suggest) a yard blueprint schematic of your layout. The high view in video is impressive. A layout for fans to build off of would be a great incentive to start.
I have some layouts and crop rotation in my book The Family Garden Plan where I teach how to evaluate your yard. The positioning of my plants and garden is tailored to our land and sun position and micro- climates, it's better for each person to use the evaluation tools in the book on their yard than just copying mine. Hope that makes sense

I start from seed. Don't put it to deep in soil and keep moist. Takes a while to get growing. Nitrogen should help get it growing after it gets true leaves come in.
I hate to asked but how do you cook your Tarr Heel beans fresh? and how do you can them for the best flavor ? I Grew ( Tarr Heel ) pole beans this yoer but can't get them to taste good by roasting them which is how we like to eat fresh (store bought) beans . Please help

Yes, I always grow my cucumbers vertically. I've also grown small watermelons vertically on sturdy trellis'.

RE summer tree pruning, I thought we were supposed to wait till the leaves were all off?
The leaves don't come off in summer. You wait until you haven't had any rain for at least 14 days, that puts them into a second dormancy.

We trellis our spaghetti and butternuts and get great yields - 15-20 per plant!
