Excellent video. One tip I have for installing a new wick: Draw the wick out the top of the burner a few inches and put it into the kerosene in the base upside down for about 20 sec. This will saturate the top of the wick. Then turn the wick back down and place it right side up into the base. This way you don't have to wait for the wick action to draw the kerosene to the top of the wick.

I bought an oil lamp yesterday and was a bit nervous about lighting it as the instructions said very little. Thank you so much for your video, I will attempt the first lighting soon.

Agreed most people rely to much on battery powered lights. A nice plus to these is if you live in colder climates it doubles as extra heat.

Nice video - and useful, above all. I lost a couple of these lamps during a move and looked up "oil lamp, wick, feeding" and your video came up. I bought a used lamp recently, but the gear mechanism seemed to be broken. Thanks to one of your other videos, I was able to re-thread it properly, after cleaning out the debris inside. And yes, everyone should be very careful about cleaning up spills before lighting ANY open flame. Kerosene, as opposed to the lamp oil featured, is much combustible and not safe for strictly indoor use.
Also, for people who are just trying this out for the first time, the wick should be quite low, not peeking out more than 2 mm above the crest of the assembly, unless you want to set off any smoke detectors in your dwelling :)
These lamps, especially during prolonged power outages, are much safer than having open candles in the house.

I was learning about these and apparently the Greeks and Romans used them because they were considered at the time to be very bright compared to ordinary candles. So many of their guards and soldiers would carry them on patrol, or if you were wandering into the creepy dark forest to arrive to another town this would light your path really well. They also made special hooks on wagons that could hold about 4 of these lamps so the driver could see where he was going.

For a couple bucks, I bought a vintage miniature made in Japan oil lamp. Likely it dates to the 1950's, maybe the 1960's at the latest. It's really cute because it's got an owl figurine next to the lamp part. Too bad there's no way to post pictures, because it's a very interesting little item. I bought the lamp for the novelty, but I'd like to use it for its original purpose, rather than let it sit on a shelf collecting dust. This video was really helpful!

The glass globe is primarily to make a strong current of air through the burner which gives a hotter flame and more light with less smoke. Of course it also protects from sife draughts, The dome on the burner forces air on to the flame. Your burner isn't brass, it is pressed steel with a coloured lacquer.

Thanx to god for youtube and being able to find this vid. I grew up not being aloud to go near fires even the coal oil lamps. My family has dozens of these indoor coal oil lamps and as such i was never taught how to use them. Nearly 2 years ago my dad had moved to our family farm sence he fixed the farmhouse up enif to love in. And sence we have soo many of these lamps my dad left at least 6 of them at the house i still live in. Well this night in my area the power went out and i need to see and do things so imma gonna have to use 1 of them and now i know wat to do. Luckily my phone uses mobile data so i cud actually searcb this up. Thank god. I was really worried about being able to use them safely and aspecially when there all over 80yo and some r over 100yo so i wanna be careful with them too.

Im too dependant on electricity when the power went out for a week we had no light source and use the last of my battery from my phone to use as a light source. We have a boiler so we could still take warm showers and use the stove. I'm seeing what else I can change. I'm getting a barrel to catch rain water too using it to water my plants and veggies and to soak clothes.
