For those that said resetting didn’t bring back the original feeling of the game. I wonder how much of their experience was shaped by the fact that NH released at the very start of lockdown, meaning the excitement, comfort and joy the game brought was heightened by going through such a scary time worldwide.
Personally I never reset, in part because the beginning of the game it just takes so long to get set up, but I’m also attached to most of the villagers I have.

A big thing some people don't think of is that Animal Crossing is meant to be played in short sessions over a long long time. The "issue" was it releasing right at Covid when everyone had nothing better to do but play ACNH for hours and hours, which means people "complete" the game much faster than intended

I've never reset and don't think I ever will. I had the luxury of building slow, taking my time, and going back to previous areas to improve them as my design skills kept improving. My island is complete now and I love walking around it. 400+ hours of care went into those areas and I love seeing my villagers hang out around the island.

is it insane to say this video makes me wanna reset again 😭 mostly bc it made me rethink how i've treated my themed islands and that i really wanna commit to something that is my own without feeling so stressed on making something so exact

    • @willoworm
      @willoworm หลายเดือนก่อน +22

After making 5 or 6 different themed layouts, I found that all I really wanted was a classic Animal Crossing island, no gimmicks, no clutter, just a layout I liked and could use to finish the bug/fish collection. I really hope the next game makes it easier to terraform because constantly changing the entire island one tile at a time is mind numbing, especially when you have custom tiles

    • @giganticmoon
      @giganticmoon หลายเดือนก่อน +9

you don’t need a theme. new horizons has tons of items, but how about instead of trying to make it a dream island, just go fishing, catch bugs, farm. getting truly attached to your town will make you want to never reset

I reset after moving out of my parents house in late 2021, at the time i wanted to start fresh in the game like i was doing in real life. in retrospect, i wish i hadn't. things ended up not going very well with my new roommates, and the homesickness was hitting hard. not having that same town that brought me comfort during the pandemic while holed up with my parents wasn't as freeing as i had hoped. im glad i at least get to visit it in the form of a dream town. but now it feels like visiting a time in my life that was much simpler. no job, no bills, no worries, just me and the town i spent every day in, preserved forever, but i can never live in again.

    • @lorettabes4553
      @lorettabes4553 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      That sucks.
Even if you don't have your old town, you can still love the game. As someone who played on the Wii and switch, I have reset my island before, but my villagers will always stay in my heart. They will never leave.
I only reset my town because I *tried* to terraform my entire island, but once I did, it didn't feel like Animal crossing anymore. So I reset and found new villagers to meet.
I hope the game can still give you comfort, all things considered. If you have a 3ds, maybe New Leaf would fit you better? Idk, I just think the older dialogue definitely helps.

That's why even though I have a switch, I mostly play ACNH on the PC through an emulator. It's way easier to back up your saves and work on multiple islands at once. I have my casual island and my design island, depends what I'm in the mood for.

    • @-DeScruff
      @-DeScruff หลายเดือนก่อน +4

I did this too for this exact reason. The only think I dislike about this method is that you can't play online and use online features.
It is nice however to be able to use a save editor to unlock color variations since certain items are color locked to your island. - I am sure this is to promote multiplayer and playing with other people... But honestly just like with older Pokemon games, this becomes a hindrance as the game gets older, and you are the only one in your friend group still playing the game.

For me, resetting my island taught me things come to an end eventually and to be happy with what you have. That first one was special, that first one felt natural, flowing, my villagers felt somewhat personal. Then I reset and it felt cold, unfamiliar, impersonal. I regretted that but I also felt that it was truly time to move on, I truly enjoyed every moment of my time on my first island and if I could do it over again(like erase my memory and experience of it) I wouldn't change a thing.

I had about 700 hours on new leaf, that was with about 3 resets and my sister having a house in the town yet she didnt go on it as much as i did. Just for having the game since it came out, id reset a few times for when id go and come back to it. But new leaf always felt like something more can be done. Obviously i understand aesthetics and such things have been around forever but i think for being younger and playing wild world, city folk and new leaf between the ages of like 5-15, i didnt have much acess to the Internet so i never felt a pressure to make my house or my town pleasing to the eye, i just put what i liked in my house and that was that. It was more just the love of collecting things i liked that i happened to get on the way. I think the Internet and the addition of giving so much freedom to the player in customisation has sort of set back new horizons in a way (for some players). As much as i love how free it is, its too much. I think the way players get creative and find theirself in the way they play is to have boundaries and limits to what they can do, and to then find a way to make it work for how they want to play. Ive reset 1 time for new horizons, yet ive played about 200 hours. And it was because i wanted a blank slate so i could make it picture perfect like i saw on my feed and it sucks that for me at least, a game that ive loved since i was little turning into a full on project feels very dull. It used to be my own world id go into to just run around and fish a ton because i liked doing that, but now its about the grind and showing off what you've done. And im not saying that peoples' efforts shouldn't be seen, people have made amazing stuff on their island and its great to see, but i wish it could just feel like a game with no expectation again. Sometimes i feel like people forget that it is a game, like its supposed to be fun and you shouldn't feel the need to put so much pressure on yourself to make it perfect if thats not how you want to play.

In older AC games, losing your town would be like a personal 9/11 and now with AC deleting your save has become part of the gameplay loop

I was happier with every idea of an island I had during a reset. But the tedium of building it hit harder every time. I never really got my final island to where I would have liked to get it.
And now, with a half finished island, and missing previous villagers (who felt more of a commodity than a character with each reset) I can say that I regret my final reset. I miss the previous island, and I couldn't deal with the tedium again. And now half my island is just an open field.
I haven't played in 2-3 years at this point, and I still feel burnt out from it.

The thing is, resetting is seen as a way for a fresh start, a way to "play the game for the first time" again. But it doesnt work. At first, it may give *way more enjoyment* then still playing on your original save, but after a week or 2, it will start to feel empty. Soon, you''ll stop playing the game entirely, and regret deleting your save.
I type this from experience, as i deleted my new leaf save, and regretted it immensely.

I did a "soft reset" twice by just adding player characters and just that convinced me that I would absolutelx regret resetting my whole island. It takes so long to get to a point where you have enough resources to just focus on decorating. Plus I have so many custom designs I don't wanna lose
So if I evee got to a stage where my island was fully designed, I think I'd just redo different areas

But when my brother moved away and took the switch we shared with him I had to get a new one. Then the first island I had on my new switch was associated with people that I had to step away from permanently, so I restarted to have that in-game seperation. But my current island and switch are solely mine and I'm very happy with it.

I just hate how after a while, playing the game feels like doing chores I *have* to do rather than things I *want* to do.
Like the game feels so fresh when you start a new island. You have objectives, villagers are new and exciting and the Island feels like it's comming alive. But when you've played for a month, and all the villagers have repeated their dialogue 100+ times each, and all you're doing is logging on - digging up fossils and planting money trees, it get's really stale..

I havent ever resetted my island, I am way too sceard. When the Gyroids were added again I completely empited my main room in my house to make it have the centerpiece of the little guys, this was my version of resetting. And I am so upset about it, I think about the old room all the time, like even when I am not playing the game I think about how mad I was to no longer be able to see what the room looked like before. I started playing ACNH again at the beginning of November this year and I didn't restart my island. I ended up manually replanting trees and emptying my island because I wanted a fresh start without losing my villagers and memories.
After weeks of playing it, I randomly said to my mom "you know what, I think I'm enjoying this more, now that not a lot of people are playing" lowkey sounds crazy.
When ACNH was at its peak I think it was draining to see everyone's perfect everything. From villager lineups, island designs, finished museums, etc. Like you said in the video; it really can feel like youre failing when your game doesn't look like the ones on Pinterest. Even though getting to that point is hours of playing and designing. With ACNH there's no correct way to play yet it still felt like there was.
I also feel like the constant flow of animal crossing everywhere made it also feel overwhelming. Everywhere you looked people were talking about New Horizons, which I guess too much of a good thing can still make you feel overwhelmed

I've reset so many times on this game it's just what I find the most enjoyable. I've only ever completed two islands but there's something cathardic to me about taking the game slow, doing what I want rather it be fishing, bug collecting or island hopping to shop at, or check out random islands without time travel. I started the game back up in August after surgery and ended up not playing again until after Christmas. So I once again - you guessed it, restarted my island. Maybe one of these days I'll actually complete another island project! But that might have to be saved for when the Switch 2 releases. Lately my new craze has been me wanting to get into custom designs since I just got my clothing shop in two or three days ago. It's nice.
And yes, it is going to have an overgrown horror theme if I do ever get around to completing this one. ;)

  • @LeviAuren
    @LeviAuren 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

It’s wild that this ever happened because there were several off-ramps.
Save data backups as offered by Nintendo Switch Online?
Allowing an absentee sibling to hand over island representative status to another villager, or share it in all its features and privileges?
The game was just generally user-unfriendly, burned me out before I got the concert, and then caught my sister with the inability to progress by locking her out of the island representatives position.
I wish I could run a multiplayer island. Size it up a bit and have several players play as island representative. The Minecraft effect of being able to specialize on different elements of the game and share spoils.

I’ve never 100% completed an island. I’ve never felt like my decoration was nice enough to finish the entire island. I’ve also never reset my game. I got it at launch and somehow just fought with my island and everything I disliked about it…THIS WHOLE TIME because I have anxiety about losing everything else. I’ve returned to New Leaf more times in the last two years than NH because it doesn’t have the quality of going ‘home’ like the older games do. That being said, I was a save editor for NL. I would do all my work designing my town on the save editor for the sake of my sanity lolol. Even though we had less control for exteriors, being able to switch up my rivers and add plants where they should and shouldn’t be made things feel magical. Picking that simple path that was just right. Idk I long for the simplicity but also the community of it. The interactions in game matter much more to me than terraforming and outdoor furniture ): I miss my animal friends that actually meant something to me as a kid. Camaraderie, a REASON to have a nice town for the other inhabitants I love and care for. Sorry for rambling , I just deeply miss what AC once was.

same, i spent around 1,5k hours on new leaf and i prefer it compared to new horizons. the first thing that i was disappointed with in NH was the musics. something was different, it didnt match the vibe of NL and WW (being the only ones i played) NL is more simple and easy and got that nostalgic feeling, that i think anyone can get even if u start playing NL when you're not a kid anymore. customization was simplier, more cozy. in NH everything is big and complicated, and the furnitures, terraforming makes u able to do realistic stuff and i HATE seeing that in animal crossing..

  • @ThePantsuPanda

This video was very interesting to me, as it presented a perspective on the game that I don't seek out very often. I'm not a "perfection" focused AC player by any means, and very much prefer the life simulation vibe of the series' roots. Along with that, after having played ACNH for several months during the pandemic, I can also say that I don't currently like it very much, and haven't gone back to it basically at all since then. I largely feel that the gameplay changes made to it have fundamentally changed what Animal Crossing is about, and, it saddens me to see that as someone who likes the old gameplay style.
The bit that's interesting to me is, specifically, seeing the perspective of a player who seems to not have a big issue with the direction that the game has gone in. You talk about resetting the game, rebuilding your town over and over again for fun, striving for these picturesque, idealized islands. Again, it's not a perspective I've looked for very often, and it was interesting to see how you, and players like you, perceive the game and the process of resetting it to have more fun in the future.
I think often about how I wish ACNH "wasn't like that", but I would never want to remove the positive experience that you and others are having with the game. I hope that Nintendo will find a way to support both of our desires in the future. That's basically all I had to say. Thank you for the interesting, and thought provoking, video.

I’ve learned that the way I played the game was flawed. What I mean is, whenever I would play it, it would be the only thing I touched on my switch for months on end, leaving me bored and underwhelmed. So, I just restarted my island after 2 years, and I’ve learned that in order to rlly enjoy it for myself, I get through what needs to be done on ACNH (the chores, maybe some decorating, keep in mind I did just restart.) and then I take a break to do something in the house irl. I never took the time to step away from Animal Crossing during covid because at 13, I felt like it was the only haven I had. Away from the troubles of my family at the time, from the pandemic, from the failing school system. It was peaceful, but I’ve learned to balance that peace with reality now.

I have over 1,000 hours in Animal Crossing: New Horizons (1,1,30 hours to be precise) and I've kept the same island since the game came out. I've had it for this long that the idea of resetting just doesn't appeal to me. I've deeply considered it over and over again throughout the years, but honestly, there's nothing about my island that I can't really change. The only thing I'd like to do is change my name but that's it.
I've flattened and redone my island over and over again. Then once I do that, I play for a little while, then put the game down.
I had my reset era while New Leaf was out, and even before that. My reset era took place during the time I was playing Animal Crossing Gamecube, Animal Crossing: Wild World, Animal Crossing: City Folk, and Animal Crossing: New Leaf. I never had a consistent town in any of these save files and I guess you could call it perpetual tutorial hell. My younger self didn't really understand the idea of a long-term town (and also I didn't have enough space for more than one game on my memory card).
It wasn't until the Welcome Amiibo update dropped that I had my first town for longer than a year. I made paths, I made my town beautiful, then I put the game down while waiting for Animal Crossing: New Horizons to come out.
I do wonder how many players like me got their resets out throughout the years of being an Animal Crossing player. I very recently tried a challenge where I'd keep on top of every Animal Crossing game at once and I was tempted to reset my New Horizons island to do the same. In fact, I planned to do so on the New Year. But I didn't.
My New Horizons island is something of a time capsule for me, a consistent in the unknown variables that is my life. Friends come and go, events come and go, but my island is always there and it has been since the beginning of 2020. It's seen my best, my worst, my highs and my lows. At this point, I've come to terms with the fact that there's absolutely no way I'm resetting my island. I'd much rather invest in another Switch if I have to do something like that.
But I can't really imagine a different island other than Yabusame.

It will have been almost 3 years since I last touched that save file, and yet I could pick it up again and it would feel like home because i spent hours working on it, no aesthetics, just made it how i wanted and progressed at my own pace.
Even now, I'm thinking about my island and how it was left, and I'm pretty content with what i made it, and would never reset it.

I never reset my ACNH world but my sister let me make my own world on her switch (we have a family switch that my mom used to get animal crossing on so she gets to run that island but doesnt) and honestly, it was a great refresh, It felt like reseting my progress except now I had control over what the island would look like and now the island I play on constantly doesn't have flowers on every inch of the grass and I can decorate it nicely .

sometimes I forget me and my family got animal crossing around when it came out, so no, the reason my island isn't developed as much isn't just because we haven't been playing as long, we're just more casual players, but because I realized we got ACNH around when it came it I find it INSANE that some people have reset MULTIPLE TIMES!? WTF DO YOU MEAN YOU'RE ON YOUR THIRD ISLAND, I JUST GOT THE K.K. CONCERT FOR THE FIRST TIME A FEW MONTHS AGO!? (our island became a mess and it took about a month to clean it up, we also didn't really know what to do and finally decided to google it because we had been seeing a bunch of stuff about post-K.K.-concert features like terraforming)

It’s gonna cost me so much money, but some day, I’m gonna get an additional switch dedicated to aesthetic or hyperfixation islands.
I DO love the idea of having a home to return to, so resetting always hurts me unless the island gets finished. So my main switch will be my home island (just my favorites of everything, fave aesthetic, villagers, fruits etc)
And then the second will be for experimentation, so I’ll never lose home, but I’ll always be able to experience a fresh new idea.
I really think if Nintendo let us have just two islands per account, half of the issues would have been dealt with. We could reset islands without having (at least MOST of our) regrets.

I've always been a bit of a "power user" in the Animal Crossing series; I started playing the game way, way back during Wild World, which would have been sometime around 2006, and like most people I had a pretty silly amount of free time to spend on video games when I was younger, and that fact paired with my lil sprinkle of tism giving me a penchant for hyperfixations meant that I poured _hundreds_ of hours into that game, and much faster than the developers really intended, so I kinda burnt out on AC and put it away for a little while, played other games, you know the deal. And then City Folk came out on the Wii and I did it all over again. And then New Leaf came out on the 3DS and I did it all over again. And then New Horizons came out on the Switch and I bought a Switch _just_ to play the new Animal Crossing game, and I did it all over again.
And in all my years of playing AC I've never felt the desire to reset my game. I get incredibly attached to my towns, and my neighbors, and I would never want to give them up just so I could start over, because I play _the heck_ out of these games until I simply don't want to play them anymore, and resetting would definitely not fix that level of burnout; the only thing that does is time away. I _have_ absolutely set the games down for a while and then picked them back up much later to start playing again where I left off, but even when I do come back to them it never really sticks; the only thing that _truly_ invigorates me into wanting to sink hundreds of hours into AC again is a brand new game. I'm looking forward to when that happens, and I can come back and do it all over again.

Part of what contributes to reset culture is the fact that ACNH only allows you to have one island at a time, which for a $90 CAD game is nuts. I understand having a limit, but one?? I’d even be okay with a paid DLC that added extra islands. Happy Home Paradise is nice, I like having a chance to fully customize homes super easily, but it doesn’t mean much when it isn’t my own island to not only customize but to also complete tasks and interact with villagers. The only way to have a second island is to buy a second switch with a second copy of the game. Hundreds more dollars spent for a second island.

I have only reset my island once. I saw all the themed islands and thought 'I can try something like that.'
The terraforming completely ruined the vibe of my little island. So I reset to play a more chill environment with minimal furniture. And it worked. I did miss all the recipes I had after 2 years of playing, but I got a new island with so much fun stuff.
I don't think I backed up my old island? It wasn't really a feature I used.

I was like millions of other players that started my island on launch day, but later reset my game due to boredom and discovering something huge about myself (transgender) and not being able to change my character's name. After I did it, I was relieved to have a new name but felt sad about everything I left behind. Huge shocker to no one, but COVID was hard for me ! I was a junior in high school with no clear direction in my studies, and was terribly confused about who I wanted to be. But animal crossing had been an old comfort for years, with my first game being back in the wild world days. Even though my island wasn't perfect, it was my escape, and I had thrown it away. You never realize how much work you did until its gone, and suddenly I had no DIY recipes, no furniture, none of my favorite villagers anymore.
Whats more is New Horizons overwhelmed me from the very beginning. The sheer amount of control allotted to us as the player was too much for me to bare. Couple that with the overwhelming online presence and "perfect islands" being shared on tiktok and instagram, I immediately shut down. Suddenly every decision I made had to put me a step closer to my "perfect island" and I found myself judging every stylistic choice I made. I soon yearned for the simpler days of New Leaf and City Folk, even though they were extremely boring to me when compared to New Horizons. I tried to revisit the game this year, but left shortly after because I was soon stuck in my endless pursuit of perfection. Maybe one day I will free myself of my crippling internal critic, but today is not that day. My New Horizon's island will remain untouched until then.

I feel like ACNH is surprisingly similar to Minecraft for the people who reset their Minecraft world to capture the nostalgia (or in animal crossing’s case, joy) but half of the time, it DOES end up failing, cause the spark of joy and nostalgia was when the game was still NEW.
Other people think Minecraft is kind of mid now just because of the sheer amount of stuff that’s changed (saying it doesn’t feel like Minecraft anymore due to complexities in mechanics)

i've reset twice, and i'm about to again. :p my current island was made in 2022, and i'm just so bored with it now. i've played since launch day, and every time i reset it's a difficult choice because i love my island and i love my villagers, part of what stops me from resetting is losing my villagers. (especially since my favourite villager is stinky, and he's considered ugly so no one ever is trading him or has him. :(() im a long time animal crossing fan, and ac has helped me a lot with depression over the past 15 or so years that i've been playing, but acnh is just so limited in its social aspect. while acnh does have a lot of beneficial things like the customization increase and the cute dlc, it's just unfinished. it feels empty and lonely in a way that the other games don't. i have over 1000 hours in the game, and one thing that i really noticed is how much you feel like a king rather than a townie. you're in a place full of "yes" men and no pushback or free will of the villagers. it's depressing. i still love playing acnh, but i recognize that part of the magic that made ac so incredible and re-playable was the guarantee that your villagers would always be different and treat you like a stranger at times. resetting can feel like a blessing, however short lived once you realize everything comes easy as hell and you hardly ever get a rude sounding comment or a strange interaction. it's missing key elements, and don't even get me started on the soundtrack OR the fact that it TOOK THEM ALMOST TWO YEARS TO ADD GYROIDS. :| im still pressed as fuck about that lol- but yeah, acnh is just a different kind of ac game. if you like having all kinds of freedom and building and doing whatever you want, it's great. but if you come for the silly interactions and fun little letters, it can very quickly become lackluster and dull. :( i literally cried when i saw the trailer for it in 2019 because i was so excited. i really hope that nintendo cleans up their act and that the next ac release will be out with full confidence and at LEAST mostly finished. 😭

I've been redoing the same island I've had since launch for the very first time and in between working on it, I also play Wild World and New Leaf on my 3ds, and then the original gamecube version on the dolphin emulator on my pc. The piece that holds the discs in the gamecube broke inside of mine and I don't have a physical copy for it anyways😭 NL was my first and I had never heard of AC until 2016 lol great franchise, we need more things from the older games in the next game, please Nintendo, hear our cries lol

So i def abused the turnip stocks on my first playthrough and was big rich the entire time. I wanted to do a playthrough where i was more genuine with the play (only time traveling to advance plot, not necessarily to game the whole system). Because of how i played in the first place im now dealing with how incredibly slow gameplay is by comparison and it’s making it hard. Add in the fact i was able to get so many great villagers the first time because of luck and also friends giving my favs away, and now this time im getting less luck plus im already bored of their dialogue. This is my 3rd time restarting over the past couple years just because i lose interest each time and dont feel a drive to build my island.

I've never reset my Island. I'd rather flatten my Island than regret my choice. I don't time travel; I just play my island the way I like rather than comparing it to others. I've played daily and I'm now working on getting every villager's photo and I don't have amibo cards so it'll take a while aside from the Sanreo villagers and I have a list of 10 villagers I'd like on my island and i have 6 out of 10 so I keep cycling through the 4 spot for villager photo's and sometimes I see a villager I have on my list of wants but I don't have any of the 4 open spots photos so I have to turn them down or replace them with one of the 6 I already have and wan't.

AC isn't something I regularly play day to day anymore, but I find myself hopping onto it once and a while, say hi to my villagers, work on some oddball thing I missed, go to happy home paradise if I feel like REALLY wanna distract myself for a while- not that nonstop attention I gave the game originally, but it's definitely high up there for me in "comfort game" I know I can come back to 😊

I've considered resetting with WW and NL, but I can't even imagine resetting New Horizon! It feels like such a slog to finish up the game sometimes. It's this odd combination of too much grind and not enough to do, and the villagers being lobotomized makes it less fun to hang out in the game.
