    Thank you a very informative video. I know that nosema testing is not part of the "glamorous" side of beekeeping, but it is very important. I am one step closer to doing this myself, thanks to you.

      Hi Bea,
      Thanks for commenting. It's a simple test but does give you a good indication as to the health of the colony.

    Thanks Stewart,
    Very, very interesting! And very happy for you that you only had a very minimal spore count. Anyone who views your videos can see by how healthy your colonies are. I'm with you on the Antibiotics. Many here in America and in my community treat preventively with antibiotics. Seems extremely reckless and unethical to me. Not sure if your aware of a product on the market called Nozevit plus, but it's all natural, plant based essential oils and amino acids for honey bee intestinal health. Per directions mixing with 1 to 1 syrup to drench and feed to the colony. Not quite sure if I would want to even go that route. Very impatient and can't hardly wait to watch your spring cleaning and / or comb exchange as a means to treat or prevent Nosema.
    Thanks for all you do for the honey bees and us new beekeepers!
    Bruce

    Stewart, do you practice any special hygienic measures to reduce the risk of cross-contamination between hives with a known virus like not wearing the same gloves at two hives?

      @TheNorfolkHoneyCo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Glen,
      I wash hive tools and my gloves between each colony inspection and replace the gloves at each new apiary I inspect.

    Great video. I do think though that you should just isolate the stomach from each bee and then crush them. It would be slightly less easy as a practice but you would have gotten more representative results.

      Hi Theo,
      I know that some beekeepers do this but with over 70 colonies I just don't have the time. I think the pestle and mortar does a pretty good job of grinding up the samples so I think the results are mostly accurate certainly for my purposes of simple identification and basic quantification.

      Hi,
      It's the SP50 Trinocular microscope from Brunel Microscopes. I really like it and having the trinocular turret allows me to take images while looking through the eyepiece.

    could I put a package of bees back in a hive, that died out ( no queen)that there is some signs of nosema, also are the frames & honey any good. thk u Robert

      @TheNorfolkHoneyCo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Robert,
      Yes, you can but personally, I would clean it all out and start with a fresh hive and frames. I don't see any advantage in spending out money on a package only to put them at risk in a potentially contaminated hive.

    • @TheNorfolkHoneyCo
      @TheNorfolkHoneyCo  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gail,
      No, here in the UK there is no treatment for Nosema. The best way to handle any infection, depending on the severity, is to replace frames that may be heavily infected and swap them out for fresh foundation.
