- The 2019 Royal Hobart Regatta (Tasmania) Wooden Boat Show.
The first regatta was held in 1883, it's the 181st year of this amazing show, take a walk around with Captain as he marvels at these immaculate wooden boats :-)
A couple of friends flew me down to Tassie to inspect a 110 year old Huon Pine wooden boat.
Luck would again be on Captain's side as It turned out that the Wooden boat festival was on the same weekend!! I've always dreamed of going to the Royal Hobart Regatta, what a show !!
This is the first time I’ve visited Tasmania, it’s absolutely beautiful, fresh air, sea food, fruit growing by the road side and the care free attitude of the Tasmanians. The charming old buildings reminded me a little of Newcastle, I will certainly return one day.....
The boat show was sensational, I’ve never seen so many wooden boats in such pristine condition.
I got to ask some question about Huon Pine and discovered some incredible facts :-)
Huon Pine. is not actually a pine and is the only member of its family, so a pretty unique tree which grows extremely slowly, averaging just 1 millimetre in girth per year.
They can grow to be 2,500 years old which means some of them started life BC!
Add to this the fact that they do not start to reproduce until 600 to 800 years of age and you have a very special tree whose timber also has remarkable properties.
The timber has a very high oil content, which renders it impervious to insects, waterproof, and imbues it with its characteristic sappy perfume.
The high oil content also means the timber can be bent, shaped, worked and sculpted without splitting and finishes to a superb, fine lustre.
Pale straw coloured when first cut, it ages to a rich honey gold.
Woodworkers love it and so does Geordie :-)

Thanks guys!!
Simon and Eryn
We hear the passion in your voice. No school like old school. You get a two master and I'll volunteer to be Captain of the Forecastle...or Folksol. Great video as always.
Thanks for the tour. Cheers!
So much to see, so much to do.... this is really just a quick walk around and in no way does it do justice to the show, glad you enjoyed it ;-)
put my name on the list i'll be third mate
I went to The Hobart wooden Boat festival In 2009 when I had a little folkboat in Kettering . Sailed up for the day , awesome event , looks like it’s grown significantly. Great day , great boats , great food , music and last but not least , Awesome setting at that federation dock in Australia’s most picturesque City .ole Hobart town . Miss you tassie . Thanks mate
Freyr SeaWolf it was so beautiful, I love Tassie, what a place!!! It’s the last land of the free!!! Loved every second...
First mate would of appreciated it as much as Captain!!! X
I love how the rigging went down the boom of that 100 YO SV. No nonsense rigging. The old accompanied by new is fantastic.
Also the green color of the brass is so charming and warm.
You were definitely in the right place at the right time, and it wasn't an accident I'd say👍
So many beautiful vessels in one place, thanks for sharing this one with us😀
Great video, many thanks very nice and beautiful ship
Beautiful Boats for sure! Thanks for the tour!
Excellent - thank you for sharing👍
Thank you for sharing your trip! Almost felt like I was there...so jealous I missed the smells and feelings of the rocking boats!
Great stuff - I never knew Aus had so many boats!
haha, it is an "island continent" my friend, all trade by sea before flight....we are a coastal society, few live in the interior. Sail before we could walk and a 12 volt battery tied to our waists.
Sea Dogs we are by hook or by crook...👍
Well done.....a couple of wooden ships there that would look good under me! Thanks! Andrew
Just a beautiful video.. thanks for including the turning moment, a great try actually, very difficult to do master and truth be told you were given an unfavourable pice there with it`s parallel grain. The guy concerned was a little bit of drama queen though!
Really hope there`s a conservation project with the Huon Pine in there somewhere.. Hang drums are ace and a great choice.
Great to highlight the the wooden boats and the show, and truly so much knowledge, love and history In less than 13 minutes!
Wonderful to watch, learn and absorb. Well done with your own little piece of unique history, touching the place the others can`t reach again.. Lovely job, great stuff..
Stevek552 thanks again mate, Tasmania is truly beautiful, the air is so fresh and the old sailors are a world of knowledge 😉
I'm a life member of the wooden boat assn here in Melbourne.. I am yet to make it to the Tassie wooden boat show but its on my bucket list. I have built a scale model of Hereeshoff's Landfall and put remote control in it and used it many times and always get comments on the detail and beauty, I would love a full size H28.
I saw the Endeavour replica in the background, ans was the Duyfken there as well? two ships I have had a long association with.
Loved the boats ! Great video , , Thank you !
Fantastic
The H28 was a important boat in your waters. So many companies made wood and fiberglass versions.
Great boats and many were made in Australia quite a few in Geelong
Epic!! Must get down to tas some time!!
Anyone know what band were playing? They sounded great!!
Make me want a Timber boat .
I'm kind of partial to the
CHOY LEE slops. My cup o tea ♡
+bobrat I love the Chou Lee, Made in China 🇨🇳
@@TheGeordietheWitchandtheWench I sW a couple in your video ♡
Very hard to find in other than complete sailing condition.
If you guys see Rob & Lisa there, say Hey for me. Geneticists, pilots & sailors!
Hey Simon, you mentioned a sort of pine but I couldn’t make out which sort . What’s it called?
Huon Pine Lagarostrobus Franklinii
Great video. would you happen to know the name of the sloop featured from 2:37-245? Cheers
Mitch Milne I’m sorry I don’t recall her name...
Boats are an excuse.
Things that allow you to avoid AI (Artificial Intelligence) that are so prevalent in urban life these days.
You two are my mentors, my guides in life, my favorite boaters. I do enjoy watching others but no others are quite like you two.
As soon as my dog dies, I’m going to join you out there. I must leave this place.
K8UR Channel runaway!!! Runaway!!! The AI will take over by 2025.... that’s what Captain predicts... take your dog with you..... and run 🏃♂️ 🏃♂️
The Geordie, the Witch and the Wench
Easy for you to say! It was easy for me to say Once Upon A Time; when my days were longer before me. One brain 🧠 says of course while the other plots against me. It has this idea for using drones with radio gear and AI to change the world 🌎. But into what..?
I’ve taught my dog to talk. She’s teaching me how to howl. See you soon.
Find some Sharpies and get some footage of Sharpies in action . We need to show that monohulls can go fast.
The question on every ones mind is where is the second mate ?
+John Ward you mean first mate, Eryn will aslways be First mate!!!
We are gearing the boat up for another sailing adventure... 😉
@@TheGeordietheWitchandtheWench so glad she is wonderful!
Great vid don't get boats like that now...
They certainly don't. Loved the show, if you ever get the chance I highly recommend it !
Sorry first mate
John Ward I had work and devastatingly couldn’t go with the gang to Tazzy! Simon has described it to me in great detail (he’s very good at that!) and I’ve seen all of the photos and behind the scenes footage!
sorry I couldn't take the constant steel drum noise & I had to abort.
Couple wants to buy a pirate ship and asked how many people it will take to sail her? Bless their hearts, but I think they should learn how to sail first?
+Cesar Gonzalez well you got to start somewhere, The idea was for us to jump aboard and help / show them how to sail :-)
There is so much nice boats on show. with lots of forsales signs on, But none with a price tag on? Hmm! I wonder why? Never mind you have a few years left in you before granny loran will need her Clipper retirement home sitting in her rocking chair knitting scarfs for her 23 kids. Just keep eating Asparigus!
hahaha !!! we want a dose of your medication, hilarious comment !!! :-) #7kids
I want to marry an Australian girl. Is this possible?
