    What extraordinarily pleasant music! Elgar was always capable of expressing the sweetest, noblest sentiments with heartfelt sincerity and exquisite refinement. Elgar evokes the bucolic grandeur of the English countryside at its pre-twentieth-century best, but never fails also to create an atmosphere of wistful longing for a world that could only exist in the imagination of saints, poets and composers of important music.
    I believe he belongs in the pantheon of the very great, but he has never been given full credit for the magnitude of his achievements.
    Elgar was blest with a beautiful soul, and the power to share his infinitely tender visions of beauty, affection, and deep yearning with those who have ears to hear.

      You might enjoy listening to Heifetz's playing of his violin concerto...that second movement is entrancing; I mentioned, underneath somewhere, what it was, to my mind, that may well have motivated his creation of the concerto and, if keeping that possibility in mind while listening to the Andante movement, it shows how great music can captivate incredibly...that last note is so moving...

      Your comment, my friend, was moving in and of itself; so succinctly put and written for those (alas, few) who have ears to hear. Cheers!

    I have lived in Cornwall for the past ten years ,before I lived near Malvern and when I hear this I once again long to walk the hills there with my old dog who is now no more, it evokes so many happy memories for me of times past never to return ,but never quite lost.

      Mr. Cole, this work reminds me of my two cats, who are now no more, exiting the house on one of the first mild and sunny days of spring, after a long, cold and snowy winter. Our pets are gifts, indeed.

    How well played. This, apparently, was the piece that Elgar himself repeatedly listened to from his bed, near Worcester, before he passed on.

    Truly wonderful and tender. So many sweet memories swell my heart. I first played in an ensemble that performed this piece when I was 14. It was just as beautiful then as it is now. Thanks for the share.

    Absolutely lovely. Sir Edward Elgar would have been pleased to sit in the audience and listen to this lovely performance, performed live by Sydney Camerata in October 2010. Back in the early 60s I remember watching a bbc Ken Russell film all about Elgar called ''Portrait of a composer'' This classic BBC documentary was made in 1962 and was directed by Ken Russell. Quote Wikipedia 'Elgar is a drama documentary made in 1962 by the British director Ken Russell. Made for BBC Television's long-running Monitorprogramme, it dramatised in vigorous style the life of the archetypically English composer Sir Edward Elgar.'''en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elgar_(film)

    Incredible performance! Bravo! Beautiful use of portamento too - very relevant for this piece, but generally not used enough in modern string performance!

    A very lovely performance, one can really hear the violas. But the camera work has no sense of the score, a pity.

      We are playing this in orchestra (I'm a 2nd violinist), the violin parts aren't the easiest in the world :)

      ***** I'm no musician, but, when cabbing, in London, a fair few years ago, I'd always admired Elgar's Introduction and Allegro for strings and had, though my ability to read music is really limited, bought a small book with it in. I'd later picked up a passenger with a violin case, who turned out to be on the way to a performance or recording. I mentioned, during the journey, how much I'd always liked the Introduction and Allegro for strings and, having bought the sheet music, said that parts of it I'd found difficult to read. His immediate reply was: "Reading it? Try playing it. That's where real difficulty lies!" Such statements never leave me. Doing what is good, right and true today, is also not at all 'easy'. Nice to find honesty from simple truth tellers - so it's a simple truth when said, that today's apparently 'straightforward' social 'normality' will eventually rise to become heaven...

      Well I wouldn't like to try play the first violin part XD It sounds nice but some is it is a right pain to play. :)

    Why are the violin players standing?

    • @rattywoof5259
      @rattywoof5259 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because they can, I suppose, unlike the 'cellists and bass players - it gives them greater freedom of movement too.

      The 5th cello is a bit unusual; but there are 4 altos. The ensemble is 4 - 4- 4 - 5 - 1.
