Wedge clamps are the best! You can make them from scrap in no time, you don't have to keep a collection of all lengths of clamps, and you can customize them to each project. My favorite is a panel clamp from 2x4, where the 'bar' is a length of 2x4, the 'fixed jaw' is a chunk of 2x4 screwed to one end, and the other 'jaw' is another chunk screwed down an inch from the edge of the panel being clamped. Then opposing wedge pairs (or 1 wedge and set the jaw at a matching angle) are tapped in filling that inch gap and clamping from the wedge pressure. Several such clamps will provide clamping force at whatever intervals are needed along the panel edges. Plus they can also be positioned some face-up, some face-down, to prevent the panel from bowing. Then assuming you're making just the one panel, you can break down your clamps and easily repurpose the materials for other uses. In this way, you can successfully clamp your panel project, with literally tons of clamping pressure, all you'll need, essentially for free from your existing lumber and scrap bin, instead of paying hundreds of dollars for dedicated panel clamps, gluing up the one project, and then having them sit around for years gathering dust until the next such large glue-up. Personally, I'd rather spend those hundreds of dollars on a piece of equipment I can't make from scrap. Wedge clamps are the best!
This video made me realize that I’ve been underestimating the power of everyday items!
