Tell me...did I cross a line with the title? It's technically accurate...this is a video of my experience in the backcountry with Grizzlies. I figure most people will laugh it off when they see what I did there. Like anyone in the highly competitive world of TH-cam, I look for opportunities to catch people's eye, but I'm always honest with my titles and thumbnails, and this is honest, even if it's open to misinterpretation. Was this excessively deceptive? Reply to this comment with your thoughts. I will listen to all with an open spirit. :-)
I think it is totally acceptable to to get the most out of the title and the thumbnail! Even when it’s a hobby you must earn the money to pay for your expenses! And maybe someday you make a living out of it. 👍
I wold describe it more of a sin of omission. Rationalize all you want but this was just a long commercial for one of your sponsors. Thats fine. You likely put in several hours of route planning and organization on top of 20 or 30+ hours of video editing into producing this content and that has value for which you can and should earn compensation. If this channel is going to change into lengthy product promotions and it brings well-earned income, more power to you. Thats not why I subscribed so its my choice to look elsewhere for outdoors content that matches what this channel usually produces.
@@stevewalker3702 I realize I failed to make this clear, but Grizzlies is not a sponsor of the channel. It's just a local company I appreciate, run by guys I like. They give me a little granola now and then, but they did not compensate me for this video, nor was I contracted in any way to say or show anything I did (other than the 30-second segment for Jackery, who IS a sponsor). I'm a believer in small local businesses providing good jobs in the community while producing a quality product, something that is not easy when you're up against industrial mass food production. This was just a trip with buddies who happen to make granola. Around the campfire, I'M the one who started that conversation because some viewers had given me a little grief for feeding my cousins granola for breakfast in an earlier episode, and I enjoyed the discussion that ensued. This was a trip video, going to camp someplace that has long been on my list, and my friends from Grizzlies came with me. I'm enthusiastic about their company and their product and absolutely hope sharing it with my viewers can help them, but this was not a paid promotion. (Well, this video was technically sponsored by Jackery, as has often been the case for over a year now).
As a subscriber/patreon it's a fine title. But if this popped up after watching other overlanding videos and it was my first taste of video from you I'd probably block you from my feed.
I appreciate you not disclosing the locations of the places you go! This is a very rare gem of a spot and one of very few locations that are so stunning and not overrun!
This was a fantastic campsite. I was interested in the use of small boulders as trail assists around 09:30-10:00 into the video. I’ve not seen anyone do that before. Good to keep in mind. Some very good cinematography along the lake. Begs for a canoe or kayak. The previews for upcoming videos look amazing. Can’t wait. The weather back east here is hunker down time. Ick.
It's actually a pretty common technique when there are large rock steps to deal with...I've seen it used more when someone is trying to climb, but it was a great idea here to get that van down without scraping on the rock in the road. Thanks for watching!
Thanks Scott! I'd been up here a couple of times over the past few years but it never worked out to camp, so I was excited to finally get to wake up at this sweet little lake!
Breakfast -- my usual is a skillet of bone-broth simmering, add left-over veggies, top with a couple-three eggs to poach. . Occasionally, I have my 'aggis: Night before, I mix the cooking water with the oatmeal with a squeeze of lemon. Next morn, it is ready to cook. Meanwhile, I brown some seasoned ground meat -- beef, elk, bison -- and mix with the cooked oatmeal. Yum-O! . Paleo granola with BACON. Paleo granola with smoked salmon. Paleo granola with cashew yoghurt. (I owned a restaurant business for ten years. My appetite tends to feed my imagination...)
Back when I was working 60+ hours/week. Going on a camping trip and eating 18 eggs and 2 lbs of bacon over 10 days was a rare luxury. Now that I'm retired and doing trips. A good cup of coffee and granola bar gets me going. Just turn on the stove to boil some water, pack up, and get on the trail. Yes, if I was in a spot where I was going to stay put for a couple of days....a leisurely morning breakfast of bacon and eggs would be nice! Even bacon.... for camping I get bacon from a local meat market that apple wood smokes it and thick slices it. No additives or preservatives.
Great Title, no problems with it whatsoever. And the video - well that’s on-point and fantastic, as usual. Thank you for putting such effort into these, it’s appreciated. I would love to see a walk-around of that Grizzly van as well - looks really capable; is it aftermarket 4x4 conversion? Any, thanks and keep up the great work!
The black van and the white van with no graphics are Quigley conversions. The other van is a factory AWD version. These are daily-driver family haulers for all these guys, so they have no build-out inside...they usually have seats for carrying the kiddos around. For this trip they had removed their back seats and slept on cots or on the floor. I'll try to look more at the vans next time we all get together.
I went with the Nisstec gonemoab 3" lift on my frontier with 255/85/16 Yokohama geolander G003 tires. It vastly improved the off road ability, yet still had great road manners. Unfortunately, 8 months after getting it completed my Frontier burned to the ground while I was fighting the Dixie fire in NorCal. I just purchased a Chevy Colorado ZR2 that will be the platform for my new build.
🤦♂️yeah Donald,, you really dropped the ball with that crummy camp site 🤣. I think the pending storm forecast next week should hopefully squash the fires in the area🙏, , but possible mud slides and snow in the higher elevations may limit your next adventure. 🤷♂️ Anyway,, safe travels.
Can't wait to try that new meat & granola mix...Oh wait, they can't do that. 😨🤣🤣🤣 That was hilarious! Good video, looking forward to you next adventure. 👍🏻😎
I had to look it up after y'all started talking about the density per cubic volume of granola, and sure enough pot's legal there. Explains that conversation :-)
I assume their paleo granola would qualify as keto...paleo is even more limited than keto, isn't it? I don't remember all the exact definitions. I *try* to eat about 85% keto-ish but honestly I don't bat an eye at the occasional bowl of any of their granolas as it's all pretty much whole foods and reasonably natural sweeteners. I suppose oats are technically grain, but I find them much easier on my system than wheat. :-)
@@softroadingthewest I'm about the same 85% keto-ish along with intermittent fasting, I like my oats too.....try to have my first meal around noonish so for overlanding you're not going cook at that time on travel days...granola option pretty good for that just be sure to with start with plain Greek yogurt. You need to move everyday to be a true overlander???....say 2 guys take a trip 80 miles off pavement to the same destination....one travels daily and it takes the op three days to get there.....the other guy travels every few days and takes time to stop and smell the roses for a few days at each camp and it takes this op 3 weeks... and so he's not overlanding just cuz he's not moving daily?
@@BirdPhish Oh no no no, that's just how I overland, because I am always facing time constraints and *have* to move each day in order to get enough crammed into my expensive time off. :-) For me, anyone who's moving from place to place - even if they stay at each place for some days - is overlanding. I didn't mean to define daily travel as a required parameter. Really, it was more to emphasize that the whole traditional camp breakfast (that I failed to feed my cousins a few months ago haha) is too time-consuming to cook every single day. :-)

OK. I'm sold. I do granola/yogurt/fruit 6 days a week. I have always struggled to find good granola. My go to has been Bear Naked Fruit and Nut. But I am definitely going to give Grizzly a shot. After all it is local. Also, Grizzly should do a sampler. So I can try all of them and see what I like. ;-). For now I'll try the Maple one. Or the Maple one. Or the other Maple one. LOL! Just trying to figure out if my stock Land Cruiser could handle that trail. Maybe the way you took out is a bit better? In any case, this weekend's snow ended any reasonable exploration up in the mountains. I'll have to wait until next summer.
The paleo version is not under the Granola heading, it's under the "Grain Free" heading. I agree this is a little confusing. If you scroll down the home page, there is a sampler set. Again...a bit confusing that it doesn't show up under the granola heading. Your LC would be absolutely fine on this trail. I've done it a couple of times in my Subaru, once with a few inches of snow on the ground. :-)
@@softroadingthewest Thanks! I realized after I posted my comment that the Paleo was in a different spot. (I went back and looked more closely at your video). I'll be over in Eugene in the next couple of weeks so I may just stop by their store.

Beautiful film once again Donald. and I would much rather have a run-in with Grizzlies Granola. You make me want to drive deeper into the wilderness. Thank you, Cheers!
Thanks Stacy! Utah's still a couple weeks away but I've been thoroughly enjoying editing the Arizona episode this week. Can't wait to dive into Utah, it's going to be a fun one as well!
From the terrain I remember a group trip you did earlier. I did a solo trip a month ago into that area. Southeast Oregon, Three Forks. After a rain storm. Never saw a person or vehicle for four days driving in and out after I left the pavement. Thought I was prepared.... Essentially I was. But you can never plan for everything. All went well at the end.
Not really anything to see. These are daily-driver family haulers for all these guys...they're not built out. Two of them slept on cots they set up in the backs of their vans, and the third one just slept on the floor. :-)
I need to pick some Granola up! I enjoy it with yogurt and I love the idea of a simple, fast, delicious breakfast. Love those vans! So many vehicles to overland with. That campsite….. dang spots like that are just incredible.
Do the Grizzly guys sell from a store directly at their facility? Just curious as I'll be passing by there on my way from California to Washington next month.
No, they don't have a retail storefront, but their products can be found in numerous independent grocery stores around Eugene including Capella, Sundance, Market of Choice, Red Barn, and Kiva.
Thank you. I looked around where I live in California but couldn't find any close to me. I'll have to pick some up while I'm up that way and possibly order more in the future when I decide which kinds I like best.
Just placed my first order with grizzlies. Ordered the breakfast combo pack. You have spoken so highly of them I figured I’d support something local and give it a try!
No, Diode Dynamics doesn't give me discount codes. They run occasional sales, usually associated with holidays/events. I don't know when the next one will be though.
Dude… ok does that date me… anyway, the videography, the sound/music, the way you sinked the video was fantastic and fun. Great people and another beautiful spot! Ok, it’s about time I have a Grizzle experience. You convinced me. Thanks again for sharing your adventures.
Planning my cross country trip, I thought extensively about weight and time. Altough granola was not chosen for breakfast, I DID choose granola as the major part of my grazing while driving selection. Doing so eliminated the need to stop for lunch, and allowed me to drive much deeper into the late afternoon. It's truly amazing how such a small amount (4~5oz, 115gr) of quality food can satisfy and sustain a person. Edit to add: Personally, I think the "Great Overland Cooking Competition" is getting out of hand. If it keeps going it will be a broadcast tv (reality) show. More camping/overlanding channels need to get back to the reality and practicality of simple food options imo.
We carry a Craftsman 20v battery-operated chain-saws. With a couple-three spare batteries and a charger into the inverter, we can usually clear a down. . We prefer battery-operated chain-saws while mule-packing, too.
Nice! I've been up here a few times before but it's never worked out to camp, so I was really happy to finally check this one off my list. What a great spot to wake up. We went mid-week in mid-September and had literally the whole place to ourselves...not a soul at any of the sites at either lake. That's the way to do it! :-)
Nice!! The teaser at the end was great. After cooking bacon, eggs toast and any number of cooked foods for breakfast while we're out. I'm more than interested in a simple, quick way to get going after coffee.
Great video with gorgeous scenery. That ribeye just made me start drooling 🤤 How can you guys have a long verbal love fest with granola after eating a steak like that? 🤷♂️🤣
Good afternoon from Godley Texas, as a 2 time Titan owner it pleases me to see you off roading in one. Great location to camp and share some quality time with a group of friends. Curious if you decided how to get some air circulation inside the cap, 12v fans, magnetic screens for the side hatches, etc. Stay safe.😎
Most of the time, just opening the slider window has been largely adequate. I did make a screen for the windoor which I attach with binder clips, and just roll up and stash when not in use, but I've only had one night ever where it was warm enough to sleep with the windoor open, even having taken a weeklong expedition during one of Oregon's worst ever heat waves. I am very heat-averse, so in the hot months I generally try to be either at high elevation or someplace cool like the coast, so my nights tend to be very comfortable. I do have a little 12V fan - which, again, I've only used once ever on that one warm night I kept the windoor open. I've actually stopped carrying it around because it was just getting in the way and never getting used. :-)
Have to say those vans look like sumo wrestlers trying to perform in a ballet when they are on those narrow trails. But they managed to pull off the show.
As a WA resident I know that grizzlies aren’t in WA & OR (at a time there was) so I knew there had to be a little catch :) loved it Donald, great video & nature shots, keep it up.
Hi Donald! Hope you're doing well! Maybe I'm jumping the gun since I haven't watched the whole video yet, but what company did the 4x4 conversions on the vans?
Sorry, kinda felt this was just a long Grizzlies granola infomercial (and I do eat their granola), with a plug for Jackery products along with two car dealer commercials. I understand about monetizing to help create new vids, however I watch your normally great videos to get a break from all that. 😀
It's a 20-minute video and we don't talk about granola until the 13-minute mark...that hardly seems like an infomercial. The thing is...this was simply the reality of this trip. I went on an excursion with buddies who run a granola company...it was bound to come up, and of course it's what we're going to eat. Sitting around the campfire with these guys, I'm actually the one who initiated this conversation, when I brought up the fact that viewers gave me crap for serving granola to my cousins for breakfast, and the discussion evolved from there. It was more about me defending my breakfast of choice than selling their product (which I gain nothing from, though they do give me some granola from time to time to eat on my trips). I'm happy to do what I can to support this local company run by awesome people hand-making a high-quality food product. It's tough for small businesses like this to survive versus huge production factories filling box stores with over-processed foods, but our entire economy is stronger and all our lives are better when there are more independent companies like this providing good jobs and producing a quality product. I absolutely hope this video benefits them. I have no control over what you see when TH-cam/Google plays ads. Their ad targeting is based on the viewer, not the content, so the ads you see are based on what they know about you. Two ad breaks in a 20-minute video seems pretty fair. TH-cam auto-populated this video with SIX ad breaks. I manually removed four of them, as I always do. I need *some* ads to play though because that (along with Jackery) helps pay for the countless hours of work I put in creating this content that everyone watches for free. Thanks for understanding, and thanks for watching! :-)
@@softroadingthewest take your point but could you do a separate section along the lines of "thanks to my sponsors...". Just a thought. You'll never please everybody all of the time! Grateful you removed some of the adverts.
Grizzlies informs me the code has been fixed and is now working. Other orders have been successfully placed using the code. Let me know if you still run into any issue, I'll make sure they get you taken care of one way or another.
I've been here before, but it's been a couple of years and it was snowy and looked different... A couple of my colleagues were here together this summer, Jason of Primal Outdoors and David of aMaysing Life...perhaps you saw one of their videos?
Well, it got me thinking actually...I mean, maple bars with bacon on them have become pretty common. Why not just sprinkle some bacon bits into your bowl of maple granola? That sweet-salty hit actually sounds pretty good to me. :-)
If I give you my email address is it possible to get that Location ? I’m looking for a place to take my two boys camping this summer as my oldest is graduating from Elmira high school and that looks like a perfect place for me and my boys to spend some good quality time together ! Not really anything to see. These are daily-driver family haulers for all these guys...they're not built out. Two of them slept on cots they set up in the backs of their vans, and the third one just slept on the floor. :-)
Thanks for the video! I'd love to check this out, what's the name of the lake?
I need to pick some Granola up! I enjoy it with yogurt and I love the idea of a simple, fast, delicious breakfast. Love those vans! So many vehicles to overland with. That campsite….. dang spots like that are just incredible.
Love the new video vibe. Looking forward to the upcoming solo series. 👏
I don't know what Granola is but I love those vans.
Those vans love you too.
You got us! I was arguing with hubby that there are no more grizzlies here! He was saying maybe one came down from Montana……..lol
Holy Granola the trailer at the end of the video looks absolutely brilliant.
We went to that campground three or four weeks ago and a gentleman had a truck and trailer and blocked that whole camp area. good video
Did Edward make your opening? Lol.
Enjoyed the video. Always love supporting local business, ordered some Grizzlies for myself! Thanks for the promo code 😄
Just placed my first order with grizzlies. Ordered the breakfast combo pack. You have spoken so highly of them I figured I’d support something local and give it a try!
Do you have a coupon code for diode dynamics too? I am excited to try the granola.
Love that trail the lakes out there are great unless it's mosquito season!
As a rookie, I made the mistake of running that trail at the worst possible time some years ago. Utterly impossible to camp, haha!
Looking forward to the solo expedition Donald. Exciting and great cinematography from what we see on the trailer.
Really nice production values... great music choices, too. Looks like a fun time with some cool folks!
Great video, Donald. You’re making great content, thanks.
No “let down" here! It’s a beautiful lake. Thanks for taking me to places I can’t go!
10:15 that sarcasm, haha. I would kill for that campsite right now.
SO PUMPED FOR THE SOLO FILM!!!!
I tried to go there early last fall and there was a HUGE tree down across the road, good to know it's been cleared!
We carry a Craftsman 20v battery-operated chain-saws.
With a couple-three spare batteries and a charger into the inverter, we can usually clear a down.
.
We prefer battery-operated chain-saws while mule-packing, too.
Amazing content as always Donald. I stayed at this same camp site two nights ago! I live a very short distance from these lakes!
Nice! I've been up here a few times before but it's never worked out to camp, so I was really happy to finally check this one off my list. What a great spot to wake up. We went mid-week in mid-September and had literally the whole place to ourselves...not a soul at any of the sites at either lake. That's the way to do it! :-)
Can’t wait to see the trip home from AZ.
Thanks for the cool video. Don't mind the negative comments. Granola commercial, infomercial etc., we all got more than we gave.
Nice!! The teaser at the end was great.
After cooking bacon, eggs toast and any number of cooked foods for breakfast while we're out. I'm more than interested in a simple, quick way to get going after coffee.
Always enjoy your adventures. Thank you for taking us along to see beautiful Oregon. Would love to relocate to Oregon.
That’s one of my favorites roads and areas!
Great video with gorgeous scenery. That ribeye just made me start drooling 🤤
How can you guys have a long verbal love fest with granola after eating a steak like that? 🤷♂️🤣
Haha, good food is good food!
I really like seeing the overlanding options available with a van platform. The Sportsmobile 4X4 custom has always been one of my dreams.
A Nissan getting chased by 3 bow ties😂😁😆😀😎
Dennis from Delaware
As a WA resident I know that grizzlies aren’t in WA & OR (at a time there was) so I knew there had to be a little catch :) loved it Donald, great video & nature shots, keep it up.
Awesome episode Donald. Given how collaborative you are, have you ever considered turning these fireside chats into a podcast?
so just modded AWD GM vans?
The black van and the white van with no graphics are Quigley 4x4 conversions. The silver van is factory AWD.
LOVE your videos, would have loved this one more if we could have checked out the 4 x rigs.
A cleaver granola commercial
Hi Donald! Hope you're doing well! Maybe I'm jumping the gun since I haven't watched the whole video yet, but what company did the 4x4 conversions on the vans?
I'm assuming they're Quigley but I don't know for certain...I will ask them and reply here again. :-)
Okay, so the black van and the white van with no graphics are Quigley conversions. The white van that has graphics has factory AWD.
I'm not sure but that looks like a place you would not have taken the Suburu?
I've actually run that entire trail with the Subaru twice. One of those times, with the added challenge of a few inches of snow on the ground. :-)
we there yet? on that road yikes !!
👋
Man, craving some granola now.
*Insert "softroadingthewest" Chevrolet logo here...*
LOLOL
Sorry, kinda felt this was just a long Grizzlies granola infomercial (and I do eat their granola), with a plug for Jackery products along with two car dealer commercials. I understand about monetizing to help create new vids, however I watch your normally great videos to get a break from all that. 😀
Yeah the pull to adverts in TH-cam videos is really off-putting but apparently irresistible.
Donald needs an income like anyone else. He gets a kick back and you were entertained. It’s a win win. Now stop being selfish.
You're getting free content, which takes time and money to produce. You already know the drill, let Donald support himself, you'll survive
Nice 20 minute.
Full of products placement. This channel is taking a bad turn.
I tried to use the coupon code on the same day the video published and I'm already getting "This Promotion Has Ended" 😕
Great video, nonetheless!
I'll message them and find out what's going on. I'll reply again once they've got it working.
Grizzlies informs me the code has been fixed and is now working. Other orders have been successfully placed using the code. Let me know if you still run into any issue, I'll make sure they get you taken care of one way or another.
@@softroadingthewest Working! Thanks so much. 😁
Good, fun video, Donald! Of course the tag line hooked me: at first I thought you had a run in with some Oregon megafauna! 👍
Haha...that's about the most click-baity thing I've ever done. :-)
Yay!
Awesome, seems Oregon got better remote camp spots than Washington.
Great video. Makes me want to order the Cardamom Cranberry.. that looks so good. Cant wait for next weeks content. Safe travels.
Awesome vid Donald... Could it be I've seen that beautiful location in another TH-cam vid recently?
I've been here before, but it's been a couple of years and it was snowy and looked different... A couple of my colleagues were here together this summer, Jason of Primal Outdoors and David of aMaysing Life...perhaps you saw one of their videos?
@@softroadingthewest 100%
So many vehicles, why didn't you guys carpool?🤣 Awesome trip!
Not liking the click bait.. it’s come to this? Yikes
Truly sorry, it was supposed to be funny. I mean, the title is technically 100% true. I figured most people would laugh it off but I may change it.
What a tasty video.
Lol. The marketing guys always over sell products. 😂 Ohhh imagine granola with bacon... I'm just saying...
Well, it got me thinking actually...I mean, maple bars with bacon on them have become pretty common. Why not just sprinkle some bacon bits into your bowl of maple granola? That sweet-salty hit actually sounds pretty good to me. :-)
I do bacon or sausage in oatmeal every so often. It's quite good!
Une$$o
If I give you my email address is it possible to get that Location ? I’m looking for a place to take my two boys camping this summer as my oldest is graduating from Elmira high school and that looks like a perfect place for me and my boys to spend some good quality time together ! I can keep a secret too 👍🏻
