Not only is it not the ONLY competition you're gonna face, you'll get compared to EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.
I feel like it's easier in Japan because animators are well known so you can get taught better than the average person teaches themselves 🤷 but I am stupid so do not listen to everthing I saiyd ohk?

Depnds though there are so many branches of possibilities when you say you want to be an animator. Studio? Freelance? Do you want to work on shows/movies. Do you want to make Music Videos. When doing studio do you want to be a first key, second key, genga team, storyboard, effects, composit. Do you want to make cool action scenes or scenes of pure emotion. When doing indie, what is your style that sets you apart from others? Mah Hirano known for the rawness and loosened expression on the canvas, absolutely free and abstract. Mariyasu known for the strong atmosphere and solid strict linework with cinematic tones.
Lots of different competitions out there
specifically the indie MV animators are their own competition, a mastery of their styles rather than the overall draftsmanships of others. But if I were to simply compete and live up to this MV (someones elses form of expression) i too would simply pass away (Sorry random 1am ramble ramble)

I mean there is an eve discord server and you can ask some of the people there, it's called Kara no Kioku. there is also a manga that eve made using the characters from his music videos which is also called kara no kioku and the people over there are the ones translating it, you can find the english version on manga dex
Trust me, none of us know either. You're welcome to come onto the Discord if you want, we discuss theories a lot.
My theory is that this (like many of Eve's videos) is a warning about the indulgences of life and how dangerous addictions can be. The character is one who is trying to live a normal life, but is carrying a great weight on his shoulders- represented by the backpack. He is searching for a feeling (0:45) and can't be satisfied by normal things. In his loneliness and desperation, he consumes something- likely indicative of a drug, alcohol, or depression (0:59). He then enters a surreal scene representing his conflicting emotions- he wants to escape and sober up, as he's "running out of time" to free himself. But he also wants to be blinded to his own numbness. 1:19 shows the damage that the drugs, depression, etc have done to him, being stabbed by knives and forks. For but a moment at 1:27, he realizes what a monster he has become and falls back to real life, falling from his high. At 1:45, after falling deeper into trouble, his "burden" now has become a monster watching over him. The rewind shows how he's stuck in a vicious cycle, living every boring day the same until he can get his "fix." All his desires and weaknesses hover over him constantly. At 1:54, it shows the grasp these addictions have on him- they are slowly consuming him. Taking hold. Directly after this image it shows his "monster" consuming more of that drug.. the monster does not depart until he has consumed every last bit of it. Only afterwards does the boy wake up in realization. He had not fully given in until the next scene. "My favorite cutlery only seems to bring bliss-" at this point, he's stopped seeing it for evil and sees it only as something that brings nothing but bliss: the only way he finds satisfaction is in consuming this thing. Accepting all the pitfalls in life. The Lord's supper in the background suggests that what is to come will be his final meal before tragedy- but with the dark, faceless figures this is clearly no holy supper. Then, at 2:12, he decides to dive in. He gives up, now fully hooked, accepting all of his burdens and addictions. At this point, he obeys nothing but his primal desire to consume. He then goes on a "trip" through many of his memories, fighting one last time to remember what he had wanted, which was acceptance, someone to hold his hand (2:48), but in a moment's glance it all disappears. All he can do now is be consumed by himself, indulging in his addictions. He consumes and consumes, until he realizes that, all along, he has been the one being consumed (3:01). He tries to run and escape, but this time, the monster he flees from has become inescapable. Following the monster at 3:12 is nothing but death and destruction, it itself is a dying animal. At the very end (3:32), he runs out of places to run. In the end, the monster whose lies he consumed consumes him completely. In the end, instead of eating away his issues, his issues ate away at him. In the end, he is little more than a puppet- he ate life, and then life ate him.
