  • Sailing vessel Tapatya. A tour and review of my self-built, junk-rigged Benford 31.8ft sailing dory.
    This is the story of SV Tapatya, a self-built, Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of our adventures as I live aboard, sail and strive to find out just what such a self-built, low-budget vessel is capable of.

    It’s cool to see the modifications that you chose to make from the original plans 😁 the shoulders you’ve built into the cockpit make it feel like a really secure place to be, in addition to all the rest of their practicality🤘🏼 -K

      Thanks Karly (spelling?). Yes, I think the cockpit side locker things make that area feel pretty secure, and the extra space they give is a real benefit 👍😃

    I had not realised that those interior frames were intended to be temporary, Tony. Very interesting. They add a very solid and cosy feel to your cabin space. This video is an excellent milestone or marker of how far you have come since those days of lofting the lines. Seeing Tapatya and Alanouwoly anchored in the lee of a Spanish island as the sun sets... well, I think that you can be pleased how things have turned out! Best wishes as you head "round the corner." Cheers to Hazel, Chris. PS. Every boat needs a "boose and screws" locker.

    interesting little yacht…very good choices for mods …excellent build…she’s quite roomy for a 32 with that cabin top across
    full beam, with those boxes making nice step up…the head placed across from
    galley gives the salon lots of comfortable space with nice simple access to v berth…
    wondering what she displaces, and how she handles in challenging seas…
    looking forward to seeing more..
    cheers to you for getting her launched and fitted out properly…

    Thoroughly enjoyed your review of the boat design including your thinking and decision to keep the frames in place which as you point out has to increase the overall strength of the hull even if not structurally required. Glad she's lived up to your expectations and hopes after 2,000 miles!

    Thank you Tony for the walk through and review of Tabatha's layout. I had forgotten that the frames you added were not in the original plan. Personally I think they add not just to the strength of the hull but finished as they are add a warmth to the cabin. Always reminds me of a warm, wood paneled den where you can sit with a good book and tot of whiskey for the evening. Take care and best wishes for a wonderful weekend.

    The fast initial heeling was to be expected..but indeed once the underwater profile changes, you get the full righting arm effect. That’s what the dory shape will do for you..

    Interesting tidbit about the frames. I think that you made the right choice in making them permanent, Tony, and you have made good utility of them. How is she for condensation? Any moisture problems under the seat or bed padding?

    Is it possible or even advisable to sail a Junk Rig 'Wing on Wing' when running downwind? I've only owned single masted rigs and had a nice speed bump from poling out the foresail and having the Main dump into it... Adapting your boat to suit yourself is pretty much the Hallmark of a dedicated and experienced sailor. That you've been able to anticipate and build in those 'Personal' touches before even wetting the keel shows how much thought and planning went into that beautiful build!... 👍⛵😎

    Great tour! (Although I know the boat very well over the years! :D)
    Couple of questions came in mind:
    -Shower, I don't recall you having shower and/or drain installed in the bathroom... So it's cockpit showers then? (works maybe down there, but up here... 🥶)
    -Sprayhood. Now when you've sailed so much already, have you been wanting to put some sort of sprayhood to have some sort of shelter during the passages?
    I really like the simplicity of the boat and your philosophy in general. One thing though of this style of boats is that the narrow aft kind of "loses" so much space.
    Now when I got some frames up and the transom as well, my 50 footer's transom is actually surspringly narrow as well - compared to new designs...
    Keep it up! And enjoy!
    Oh, one question still: What kind of procedure it was for you to register and get insurance for your boat? (In Germany! 😱) That could be a topic of a video 🙂

    • @SVTapatya
      @SVTapatya  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks Panu
      I’ll try to remember your questions 🤔
      Yes, cockpit showers. It’s good to keep all that moisture out of the boat.
      Yes, the aft end does not have vast amounts of storage space. It’s something you have to come to terms with. That’s why I built the dinghy and kayak storage (deflated) on deck.
      Registration and insurance were both really easy. Germany is very open to self-builders and there are absolutely no checks on the boat (unless you have a propane system installed).
      Insurance was equally easy. I just had to send a few photos of the boat.

    • @SVTapatya
      @SVTapatya  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don’t feel the need for a sprayhood. She’s a very dry boat. Maybe some wind shelter on the cockpit sides 🤔

      @@SVTapatya Ok! That was surprising! I was sure that Germany has at least couple of papers to do in three copies with signatures and stamps! 😂

    Excellent Tony. Tapatya looks good inside and out and remarkably spacious inside. Have you seen any stability curves for the Benford regarding righting lever versus degree of heel?
    Alan in Wave Rover has just posted a video to mark the start of his transatlantic to Europe. He makes mention that he has had difficulties with the Mk3 and trim tab set up.
    Looked like a quick turn around for Hazel’s boat prior to splash (2 weeks?).
    Thanks for sharing😀👍⛵️

    • @SVTapatya
      @SVTapatya  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Norman
      No I’ve not seen a curve. On his website, Benford says this “We did an inclining test on Badger when they visited us and confirmed that she had positive stability to about at least 125° heel, even with her loaded with all their worldly possessions and with the heavier junk rig.”
      That’s the best I can find in that respect 🤔
      Yes, 2 weeks for Hazel’s boat. She’s showing it on her channel - Sailing Alanouwoly
      youtube.com/@sailingalanouwoly?si=D2wxWHeyrXpxVPAp
      As I said in an earlier comment, I have now had some initial success with the windvane. Further testing needed. I’ll talk about it when I know enough to be sure 👍😃

    • @normanboyes4983
      @normanboyes4983 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SVTapatya Thanks for the response Tony. I only asked about the stability curve, not because I thought Tapatya was unstable but in response to your comment of your normal heel under sail. I would not consider what you are experiencing unusual or alarming and for small degrees of heel there maybe very little righting lever until say 10-15° when it starts to kick in and increase significantly for every degree of heel after that with the maximum achieved around deck edge immersion. The tender response up to 10-15° has a positive as it makes the boat movement more comfortable.👍

    • @SVTapatya
      @SVTapatya  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks Norman; all good mate! I hope my response didn’t sound terse - that certainly wasn’t the intention.
      Yes, I think the initial heel is a characteristic of the dory hull. Once you’re used to it, it feels completely natural. The boat also sits at anchor really nicely. It’s rare to experience any rolling motion 😃

    • @normanboyes4983

    Thanks for the update after 2000nm. Do you think she would be less tender with either more ballast or deeper keels?

    • @SVTapatya
      @SVTapatya  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Craig. The characteristics of the hull are very much those of a dory hull (which is what she is). No doubt a deeper keel would make some difference, but the shallower draft also has its advantages. Basically, dories like to be loaded down. That means you can pack them pretty full with kit. I think the designer has the keel and ballast pretty much right. You just have to get used to the way a dory hull behaves in the water, which, in my case, was easy. I feel completely comfortable on her now 😃

    The combined centre of effort of both sails will be in the same place, just switch the masts at your convenience. I like ply on frame, blding on molds/temporary frames makes no sense to me outside of racing yachts.

      The plans as such aren’t a great help. They basically just give you the dimensions and some details. However, I videoed the whole process, which I hope will help future builders. Frames will definitely contribute to hull stiffness and quietness in a seaway, so why not, strength is immaterial it is plenty strong enough anyway.
    I like the layout, head placement is always a struggle. I have never seen a perfect one, my last boat it was forward of the salon so further away from galley. but further forward also means lower headroom and less space inside, its always a compromise. Yes I always slept in the quarter berth when I had guests aboard or was passage making more central to the boats action stations should the skipper be needed in a hurry.
