What just MIGHT be the hardest thing for a younger person to understand is something I call, Larry Bird’s “ho hum greatness.” If you were alive at that time and watched Bird play (on most nights), it didn’t really look like he was DOING anything. But he’s flashing off screens for a twelve-footer, roving into the paint for a steal, facilitating with his passing… but he didn’t look like MJ or LeBron. He didn’t run fast or jump really high but then you look at his numbers and he’s got 28 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, team win by 15 points. That was, like, MOST of the time. You’d think he’d never broke a sweat or he was bored. The man was a whole different type of critter. Ho hum greatness!
Exactly. Jordan looked good doing anything. Bird looked ordinary while doing the extraordinary. I tell the younger guys who didn't watch him that it's hard to see in highlights how much he elevated his teammates. He was pulling the strings. They were an extension of him. - His only focus was on the best route to winning. If that meant feeding the big guys, you do that. If it meant putting on a shooting exhibition, you do that. It often meant creating and setting up the higher percentage shots for the other guys. - I believe he's the kind of player that can beat you with his four guys or beat you with your four guys.
@@daylearceneaux4083 Absolutely straight up. Highlights just can’t show it. Bird was 6-0 (playoffs) against the Bulls and some of those are WITH Pippin. Why? Well, it wasn’t because MJ couldn’t fill it up. He scored MOUNTAINS of points against the Celtics. Even broke the NBA record (63) in a single playoff game. (I know you know this: stated for others.) Yet no matter how other-worldly MJ was, Bird would take him. Just like you noted. Bird had his fingers on the pulse of the entire game… including YOUR players. He surgically dismantled you any damn way he wanted. MJ could score. Bird could beat you. That simple. But you have to see it in context. Yes, he’s impressive in highlight clips but it’s almost deceiving. What made him lethal were the intangibles. The stuff that is banal, or bland, to the human eyes. If you played against him, you KNEW.
