2023 Genesis G90 | Great Car, Gimmicks and All

  • We review the new 2023 Flagship Genesis G90, and car that in the past felt like a knock-off luxury car. This generation brings more technology and mechanical know-how to push the brand forward, and for around $100,000, it works on almost every level. With the Sedan falling out of favor for SUVs, this car may fly under the radar. Others to consider are BMW 7 Series, Mercedes S Class, Lexus LS, and Audi A8.

I bought a ‘15 Genesis Sedan (Early G80) on a whim, and a lot of my friends made fun of me cause they thought I should’ve gotten a coupe. Then they all rode in it.. Lexicon Audio, the best cooled seats I’ve ever had, was decently quick, comfy as hell to ride in, and a great cruising car. It got totaled thanks to a Prius but damn that car took the hit well, and the safety features were great. What Hyundai and Kia are pulling off these days, at their price points, when they put their minds to it, is deeply impressive. The Ioniq5/EV6 are universally praised and the wait times to get one are brutal. The N products are very solid performance for money. Their crossovers and SUVs are well-rated and in demand. And going toe to toe with the established germans on luxurymobiles, and by now giving them quite a reasonable fight for much less money, is the icing on top.

Their awd system is top notch too and their reliability is top5 (in part, because of how old they are). Right now Infiniti is on a very low level, yes, but they did deliver a good amount of great cars in the past. And lots of great innovations like the elctro-hydraulic steering in the M/Q70 (which is now used by Porsches and Mclarens), 360° cameras (first on production cars), 4 wheel steering,... Genesis are up to a promising start, in part thanks to all the money Hyundai pumps into them, but they've not brought anything truly revolutionary to the market. It’s so good to see how far the group has come. I owned a corporate training company in Seoul back in the day ad Hyundai/Kia was a client. We’d have discussions with the engineers and designers about the group getting into Motorsport and improving their designs. I would encourage them to be more confident about what they can do so that they can avoid gimmicks and over-design trap.

@@doubledown8229 They've gone away from classic elegance and going with bold everything. It's supposed to make each new model seem like being worth upgrading, but I think they've undermined their own design principles. There's no continuity anymore. They're experimenting too much, trying to see what sticks. I think the less prestigious names are doing it better now. There's more consistency, fewer shock elements, and more identifiable design language through the whole fleet. BMW interiors aren't too bad, but the exteriors are poor. Mercedes is just ugh. These cars are going to age very poorly. I think they will be seen in a similar way to malaise era cars from the 70s.

My previous Genesis sedan was noticeably quieter after I added more sound dampening materials all over the place, so I know there is room to go.

@@axel-11 Chime sound? You mean door not closed properly? It is hard to miss even in the back seats, and there is no problem making it a bit louder because it should be very audible, due to being safety relevant, and how often does a back seat passenger forget to close the door properly? If because of that it has to be slightly louder from the front, I see no issue there. To the contrary, it might be kids back then, so parents in the front want to know if their kids didn't close the door properly.

@@Dowlphin No, I was talking about any driver related sounds, and in particular -aforementioned in first comment turn signal chime. I assume car manufacturer would like to isolate driver (and his functions with all blows and whistles and those chime sounds) from backseat passenger (and his/her comfort and tranquility). Probably the idea of putting speaker in headrest is similar to something I had experience with in some high-class taxi service - the driver had a headphone in his ear to hear direction advices from navi system, so passenger would not hear them and would be able to relax with more comfort and in silence if needed.

Thrilled that Genesis is maintaining a strong trend of tasteful, restrained design with an almost '50s bent on brightwork and the "marble" trim. I am curious, since I've noticed it on Genesis from day one - are the silver interior brightwork elements still a cheap plastic feeling when you're pressing them? That always aged poorly in my experience, and I hope they fixed that issue. They've come a very long way in the last 10 or so years - looking forward to seeing how they continue to improve.

i dont like the rear window lines they dont line up with anything. they shouldve specialized in old school aesthetics and ease of use interioir, with switches that have base heavy clicking sound and some phsycal resistence to being moved, etc. they already have quite a aesthetic focus like lexus lc500. they couldve have allowd screen to be manually coverable with wood veneer like a manual and more simple version of what is in bently continental, without the pshycal gauges, or at least allow it to be turned off when not in use. simplyfy the front end more like the genesis EV, to make whole thing look more similar at every angle of car and not busy at front and plain everyhwere else. a hole through passenger seats would allow storing long objects including rear seats legs etc while allowng more trunk storage space
