thank you for this. I bought into nikon for 2 decades. I've since bought a fujifilm, and have adapted nikon, and M42 lenses to it. I was considering adapting those M42 lenses to my film nikon bodies, but after seeing this video, I will probably stick with Nikon lenses to the nikon film body. Thank you for this. You saved me wasted adapter money and time I would have spent trying to adapt to nikon.
Good intel, both about the bad glass adapter, and EXCELLENT idea about keeping an old 35mm body around as a mirror "crash dummy". Now I know why I kept that old dented Nikkormat. Two words for the background haters -- Faraday cage.
If you use one of those adapters with the glass in that back of it does that mean you won't damage your mirror? If so surely that would be a better way to check if your M42 lens extends to far.
excuse me sir what are you using as a background. I noticed someone say it's terrible but they do not see the potential in such as a background that is further back from the subject, creating what we call subject separation. But also becoming blurry as a result making for interesting light and lighting options.
I am using both adapters on my Nikon D800. I am wondering how to get rid of the Err message in the viewfinder after I have captured an image. A simple turn off and on normalizes the situation but it is annoying. Any idea?
Thanks for the video. It is a very practical video and relevant today, even though it is over 5 years old. I have older nikon Pre-AIS and AIS lenses that are lots of fun to experiment with. Also I have a few Soligor T4 mount lenses (T4 to Nikon adapter used) that offer some nice results. None of them are as precise or accurate as my modern Primes and even 24-7- / 70-200 lenses. But I find the older lenses give a look that is hard to replicate in Lightroom and is nice for experimenting with. It seems that M42 to Nikon is a bit more difficult to use as well as a major drawback with the infinity focus issue. I was about to place a bid for a few M42 lenses on sale locally, but your video convinced me that I am better off rather finding a few other older Nikon lenses to play with.
Please, notice that the focal plane to lens mount in Nikon cameras is LONGER, NOT larger. That piece of information, you mention in this video might be misleading. That is the reason why infinity focus can not be obtained and a proper THICKER M42 mounter must be used for proper focusing. Other than that, thanks for the tips and insight to prevent mechanical issues when using Vintage Takumar or Russian Helios lenses.
There might be several options which could fit your needs for your NIKON mount camera: All of the following adapters will allow you to focus to infinity. That feature is relevant... I hope this information helps you.
Can you, or any viewer, tell me if the Tomioka Yashinon 55m f1.2 will interfere with the mirror on a Nikon d3200. I do realize that this combo cannot focus to infinity, but what is the maximum focus distance? Thanks.
Hey there! Thank you much for your time and suggestions, i would like to kindly ask if you've ever tried to use one of these adapters with probably a bigger lens, maybe a 300mm tele or something similar. I have many cheap m42 candidates to buy in my country and would like to know if they can actually work to shoot at +40 cm from me since i've seen quite a lot bad references about. Other than that i should mention i have a very old machine (Nikon D5000) and i would like to use these vintage lenses to shoot products, portraits, maybe landscapes and make some experimenting with video. Thanks in advance for your time
that a 50mm 1.4 Tac if im correct , do u have any issues using that lens in a nikon body ? i was looking at getting a deal on two of those, 50mm 1.4 & 55mm 1.8 . i knoticed the yellow glass. its radio active with the 2 mill number
I took a ring whitout lens, I worked on consuming the part that comes in contact with the M42 lens, now I haven't the infinity focus but I can shoot full-length portraits
What solution? The guy is giving you some tips in order to avoid damaging your camera body. I totally agree that old Nikon lenses are the way to go. I tried an Helios M42 and it's OK... but I prefer any Nikon 50mm 1.8 version (pre AI, AI or AIS) over this lens.
Hi, I have the same takumar 50mm f1.4 lens and was hoping to use on my Nikon d7200 with the m42 adapter... did you encounter any issues with the mirror. Thank you in advance
Thanks for the video. I was interested in getting some vintage Zeiss lenses and adapter for Nikon. After seeing the caveats, I’m backing off from doing this. I’m extremely happy with my modern lenses and I don’t think the vintage lenses would be worth the effort needed to get them to work properly.
Hey if you want to use these on a full frame DSLR for cheap pick up an old 5D mark I. about 300 bucks for a 12MP FX camera with shorter flange distance then Nikon.
That's a good idea, but I'm not sure I want to be kicked off team Nikon. I've got a D1X and D2H I want to make videos on. I'm most likely going to sell both of those cameras so I'll keep the 5D in mind. Though I kinda want a Fuji X-T1 because of how cheap they've gotten.
I'm a Nikon shooter myself Got the D800, D4, and D7100. I just picked up the 5D to use purely for manual focus vintage lenses cause they are more easily adapted retaining infinity focus. It was the cheapest full frame digital sensor I could find. And in a pretty capable (for the time) body at that too.
I'm sold. As soon as I make some videos on the 3 older bodies I have, I'll sell them and use the money on a 5D. I've got a handful of M42 lenses that I really like.
nice! good luck. Just realize that there is still a possibility in some lenses hitting the reflex mirror in operation. Make sure to check the compatibility before using. Found a decent list here: www.panoramaplanet.de/comp/
Question: I have a focus to infinity adapter and everytime i try to mount the lens on the Nikon the adapter has a slight wobble when i focus. I removed the lens and left the adapter in, and its definitely the adapter that makes the wobble. Are all adapters like this? Is there a fix for this? I used these lenses: Pentax 135mm f/2.8 and Helios-44m 58mm f/2
hey so idk if anyone knows the answer to this but i bought the same adapter as the one he links and it seems to make all my lenses macro lenses is this just an adapter thing or can i get regular distances with an adapter
Can you remove the glass off that adaptor? I have a similar one and the rim of the glass has two small holes at opposite ends. There might be a special tool to remove that glass element. It is the K&F model adapter ( m42 to Nikon).
I have an adapter without glass, so I don't need to remove the element. It was like $3 from China. I'm not upset about the poor quality, but waiting a month to get it sucked.
Light Slayer 69,000 Just got two of these from amazon.www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003Y2ZESE/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1483848771&sr=8-1&pi=SL75_QL70&keywords=m42+to+nikon+mount.
You're auto exposure video camera picked up the silver and unexposure shot be aware of that. All of your theory and logic should lead to quality execution which should have been grey background a neutral 18% middle grey. Easier to view to the eye and "correct exposure"
Worst background ever seen on yt
To be fair to the background, I also had a terrible video effect on.
It's more effective than tin hats
I reckon you can just find some cheap fabric at a roll and it will look way better!
I have literally never seen a background like that, ever. But awesome video though! Thanks for the tips!
You'd mean the best, i guess :D
I never seen anybody use tin foil as a background.

Is there like a list or something of which lenses hit the mirror?

My lens are canon fd. My teleconverter is a m42... How do I put them together... Can't find an adaptor

Hi, any experience mounting a super takumar 50 on a Nikon D4 ?

what m42 mount would you recommend ?

Hi, do you know if these adapters will work when connect to the FTZ adapter? Trying to use a vintage lens and get IBIS support.
that a 50mm 1.4 Tac if im correct , do u have any issues using that lens in a nikon body ?
i was looking at getting a deal on two of those, 50mm 1.4 & 55mm 1.8 . i knoticed the yellow glass. its radio active with the 2 mill number
Is that the 8 element 50mm. Lust 😊
The title implies a solution yet there isn't one??
I took a ring whitout lens, I worked on consuming the part that comes in contact with the M42 lens, now I haven't the infinity focus but I can shoot full-length portraits

Some lenses are pretty easy to modify so that they achieve infinity focus on a Nikon body.
Love the close ups of the lenses!

Hi everyone. My fix for the aperature to be open is use plastic ring from the bottle cap
If i directly try to mount this helios lens in nikon body then, will the mirror will be ok
It should connect at all, that's why you need an adapter
Dang should of watch this video before buying a useless m42 adapter

Just smash he glass? If you don't care about it.
Also trying to remove my glass. They talk about using friction grips, whatever that is

Fotodiox adapter 👍
Great video, thanks for the information, really useful for me!
Could you have picked a worse background?
Suggest you speak faster in future videos.
Zong yi adapters, are pretty good not expensive also
Are you sure your'e a photographer?
Dude, your backdrop sucks! That aside thanks for the info
man that lens is very radioactive
It's also incredible. Amazing value for the price they can be had for. Only issue is focusing when stopping the lens down.
So is your cell phone you put to your head..
Use it or lose it.
