- American television sitcom The Hughleys aired on ABC from September 22, 1998 to April 28, 2000 and then on the now defunct UPN from September 11, 2000 to May 20, 2002. It starred comedian D.L. Hughley as main character Darryl Hughley, a 35-year-old vending machine salesman, his wife Yvonne, played by Elise Neal and their two children: 12-year-old Sydney played by Ashley Monique Clark and 10-year-old Michael, played by Dee Jay Daniels. The plot centres on Darryl moving his family from his predominately black South Los Angeles neighbourhood to West Hills, a wealthy, predominantly white neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley. As he and his family adjust to living there, they also battle with trying not to forget who they are and where they came from.

While I applaud D.L. for being a black man with his own show, The Hugleys just wasn’t the same caliber of the elite 90s-early 2000s black shows like “Martin”, “Living Single”, “Moesha”, “The Parkers”, “Girlfriends”, “Half and Half” or even “My Wife & kids”. I often forget The Hughleys even existed!
I could say it was the suburban thing… but even My Wife and Kids and Moesha etc were suburban and 1000x better than this. They tried, but it was kind of boring in a way
Well said!!!! There was something super flavorful about those shows in the 90s. The enriching music performers, the conversation, comedy, culture, the suspenseful episode arcs, etc. His show? Ehh…
It had a few good episodes but not enough to make me watch it
I actually liked The Hughleys far more than My Wife & Kids... Moesha changed once Ray J was added it became wack as they portrayed the dad as a cheater. Roc is a show that doesn't get its flowers. One of the best casts and storylines of any 1990s AA TV show. Hangin' With Mr Cooper is another one as well. Where I Live should have gotten more support too.

I'm gonna be honest, My Wife & Kids was funnier and more relatable to viewers. The Hughleys was quite boring.
The storylines don’t sound the same. I’ve never watched this show. My wife and kids is one of the funniest shows I’ve ever watched 😂 I still watch it a few times a week when I need a good laugh.

Something about DL Hugley I can't put my finger on it, but as a kid I skipped his and Steve Harvey part's on King's Of Comedy 😭
DL just wasn't funny to me. I couldn't get into his show either. People can say what they want about Steve Harvey nowadays, but at least The Steve Harvey Show was funny.
DL standup is alright. But his roasting is top tier. I put him up there with Jamie Foxx when it comes to that

Let's be honest. My Wife and Kids was way better than the hughleys. ABC saw more potential in Damon's show and the hughleys weren't getting as much viewers as ABC expected. UPN was the network where black sitcoms thrived in the 2000s and they basically built their network on the backs of those shows which was why they were so willing to pick up the hughleys.

The Hughleys lacked chemistry. The show did not feel organic and the jokes felt forced.
I used to watch this show after school on UPN. I liked it and still do. I still remember the theme songs.
I know I'm in the minority but I loved "The Hughleys" TV show. I don't like his stand up or his radio show, but this show was the best thing he has done to me.

Great video. Not a fan of D.L., but I enjoyed the Hughley's. I am not surprised about ABC at all. these days ABC doesn't have a show with a positive black male lead, they would never have 2 shows with positive black male leads.

In an vlad interview with dj Daniels when stepped away from acting and veered into trouble that could have ended wrong dl never turned his back and testified at his case. When shows ends most stars go their separate ways.. it's cool to hear when one cares.
It was ok (IMO) but wasn't terrible by far that I remember. However, it's not something I would revisit.

TBH Bernie Mac and Everybody loves Chris was funnier than both. But yeah I could find Wife and Kids reruns all the time on TV back then the Hughlys always popped up on small black owned stations like Bounce and TV one.
My favorite episode is still the one with the late Pat Morita plays a Korean man moving in their neighborhood, and him and Hughley get into it.
I actually liked The Hughleys far more than My Wife & Kids... DL's show had the better cast and storylines in my mind.

The TV show The Neighborhood is the opposite of The Hughleys because it's about a white family who lives in a black neighborhood. It's on CBS and Paramount+.
The tones of the show were completely different in my opinion.
Well the Wayans brothers are known for stealing other creators ideas but putting a little twist to it to make it more funny and I noticed how they tried to use the idea of the characters Marcus Burnett and Mike Lowrey from the movie Bad Boys for their characters in the movie White Chicks especially when Marlon’s character’s name is Marcus as well

I personally wasn’t an avid watcher of either. I watched more episodes of MWAK than the Hughley’s but I don’t think one was better than the other. They were both fine but neither really held my interest enough to watch the entire series.

The most memorable thing to me about The Hughleys was Marla Gibbs and John Henton Their neighbors were annoying and so was DL.
I saw a few episodes, but it wasn’t my cup of tea. My Wife and Kids, however, was hilarious!

I think his comedy set from Kings of Comedy soured the TV dad. Look up his joke on sleeping over at child predators homes who are family members. While he's making a family show with kids, that's just gross. If he was at all good at acting you'd see him in something just for his celebrity. But they didn't even need him for Soul Plane.
The only good/memorable episode from this show was when Bobby said “N*gga”…. And as I’m typing this I just realized that wasn’t even this show 😂 it was the one with LisaRaye in it that I don’t remember the title. So yeah, I guess there was nothing good or memorable about this show 😂
No if anything My Wife & Kids was more similar to The Bernie Mac Show as far as storylines which Is why both of those shows used to compete on same night

I preferred My Wife and Kids over The Hughleys. Only one episode with Pat I really liked and still remember. The rest were not worth remembering. Plus, I couldn't stand their White neighbors! They weren't like other memorable White actors and actresses as seen on TV in those days. 🤔🤔

The Hughleys were somehow boring and try-hard. The chemistry just wasn't there. Then there was LisaRaye's acting.
