- Screenwriter and producer Mara Brock Akil knew what was like to feel invisible. In 1999 she looked around Hollywood and saw an extinction underway: Black women, and their stories, being written out of primetime TV. At the time, the then 30-year-old was putting the finishing touches on her first network show, a sitcom for UPN called Girlfriends. A new millennium was on the horizon, and she wasn’t going to let the future begin without Black women front and centre.

I loved Maya and Darnell’s storyline! From the break up to the reconciliation-not to mention Darnell was a nutritious snack to look at. Their scenes were raw and real. Well done !!!

My only problem with Darnell was him always trying to hold Mya back from bettering herself with going back to school. It was so sad to see a man so insecure in not wanting to see his own wife flourish. That separation was needed for Mya's growth.

Darnell was a typical male. He cheated and Maya forgave him. She cheated and he packed up and left.
Girlfriends is my comfort TV, I could watch it all day every day. Toni was by far my favorite, I always love a self centered diva the most lol, but I genuinely enjoyed the seasons after she left and thought Monica fit right in well. They NEED a movie to give us closure.
Right? And do it before Tracee Ellis Ross ("Joan") goes on to her next TV or movie project.

Im not a fan of reboots but i think a 10-episode reboot to give real closure would be good for girlfriends. It ended with joan's fiancee returning home soon & her & toni never got to resolve their issues.

By now, Morgan should be about to graduate high school and Jabari should be married with children. Maybe Morgan wants to go to school in California and her and Toni go there from New York and Toni runs into Joan.
Joan still has her restaurant but teaches a course at UCLA as an adjunct professor while being married to Aaron.
Mya is a young grandmother and Lynn adopted a child.

The Game has been rebooted twice. They can reboot this series, if not give it a proper ending.

Thank you for this beautiful breakdown behind our favorite girls. Girlfriends did incredible for them not to have a strong marketing campaign behind the show. Along with the strong acting, that says a lot about the writers.
I think they should do a spinoff show called boyfriends (four men who live in NYC, one, gay, one straight, one pansexual, and one who is celibate)

Girlfriends definitely deserved a proper ending it ended on a cliffhanger just like Smart Guy, That's so Raven, The Jeffersons, The Wayans Bros, Family Matters, Moesha, and many other shows that also ended on a cliffhanger as well

Why can't they make shows like this anymore. You have a show about strong successful black women with a successful black male friend and they were normal just people. Now a days they have to be a bunch of perfect superwomen who are better than their pathetic male counterparts.

I loved the show but as a single black woman watching in my 20’s, I thought Joan was just too needy for men as a executive and independent woman. I loved Reggie Hayes as well. His character should have married Joan! This show was the black answer to Sex and The City. Persia White started on the Cosby Show. Thank you Kelsey Grammar for producing the show. It sucked it didn’t have a real ending. It also sucked I wasn’t available for reruns for years.

I binged watched Girlfriends back in 2021, I loved watching it. I wish it got a proper season finale. I wonder were only shows that survived moving to the CW were the WB shows over the UPN shows?
The story seems to have changed regarding why Jill Marie Jones left the show. I remember this happening in real time back in the day, and remember the story being that she was leaving because the four of them were trying to negotiate a raise, which if they didn’t get they were gonna strike. When they didn’t get the raise, the other 3 caved in and didn’t strike, and I remember it being said that Tracee Ellis Ross said “sorry, I’ve gotta keep my job”. Jill felt some type of way about them not keeping their word, so she left.
Whatever happened, it’s good to see they reconciled because Girlfriends is a classic! I wish BET would’ve done what they did with The Game, and rebooted it.

This always happens to black shows that do well I recently found and binged watched underground...the networks no matter how they sugar coat it don't like black shows having positive longevity especially in the black homes...they'd rather have shows like Maury and Jerry Springer tell us who they think we are instead of learning who we could better become....
Joan’s house was passed down through her family from her grandmother, to her mother and then her.
One of my favorite shows I can rewatch girlfriends over and over again and not get tired. Topics in this show are relevant for today's adults.

Hollywood is risky business ESPECIALLY for black people. And I honestly feel like if girlfriends were a show in this day and age and she decided to leave it might have worked out for her but back then there were not many roles or opportunities in film for black women.

Man I loved this show. Def one of those shows that was better then so much on TV, not just black shows, but one of the great SHOWS of the CW/UPN era that got neglected in the end.
I could relate to the comment at 2:27. I make good money and have my own house, yet I don't drive a luxury car either. The main difference between me and Joan is that instead of driving a Toyota Camry, I drive a Honda Accord😆😆.

Tonie was my favorite, followed by Mya . Tonie's standards were never lowered for herself and she thrived in it .Miya was ALWAYS 💯 .

I remeber the show moved time slots, it was difficult to watch it afterwards from time to time unless, you remembered the timeslot.
Juicy Pop I absolutely love your channel. I had the biggest crush on all four cast members of Girlfriends, and they still look hot to this day. They were the LA version of Living Single and gave birth to shows like Half & Half and Run The World. IMO I think the show ended because of all the Reality TV shows that were airing in the mid 2000's on VH1 like "Strange Love, Flavor of Love, I Love New York, Bret Michael's Rock of Love, From G's to Gents, A Shot of Love with Tila Tequila(Those two was on MTV) I Love Money, Real Chance of Love, For the Love of Ray-J. Those shows brought in a lot of ratings people were glued and still glued to Reality TV. But Girlfriends was still a great show.
I wonder how the crew on the set found the idea of working in a majority black cast and crew. It’s interesting to think that was an assumption some of the stars had only to find out the opposite. Perspective really changes when you have a full picture. I don’t know why they would have some token white girl in the cast. Lynn’s story of being half black and half white probably resonated with a lot of mixed girls whom had the same identity. It brought an interesting story, and the HIV episode they did where Lynn interviewed the childhood friend and even gave a tribute to the character was beautiful.

I know this is probably an unpopular opinion, but I didn’t care for the friendship dynamics between the “girlfriends.” They all seemed like frenemies to me. But, it was still a pretty good show.

I loved that show!! I was in HS and they were just so fun and classy at the same time.. I liked especially Joans and Mayas lifestyle. I loved the way the characters were written, and the dialogue, felt very sincere & genuine..not a cliche, or stereotypical. I also recall Kramer getting the credit, whenever the show was mentioned in mainstream media..
Season 1 Joan would break the 4th wall by addressing the audience with her inner thoughts. Why did that change?
I read somewhere they wanted all the girls to be main characters. Having only Joan break the fourth wall made her the main character. They wanted all the girls to equally important.

@@dahomieenot necessarily distracting, but it gave more insight into her thoughts and emotions, but we didn’t get that 4th wall break from the other girls. Now if we got that from everybody, that’ll be different.

I loved this show. I loved how they gave Tony's character a farewell in a friendship breakup with Joan which was heartbreakingly realistic. So good. I wish the network did the right thing and ended the show properly.
Darnell was weird and too mean. I never liked him. But it was wrong for maya to have an emotional affair.
